Triumph NTB-550: the entry price buys a smaller console, not a smaller machine

When a balancer costs less, buyers reasonably assume something in the measuring envelope got cut. On the NTB-550 it did not. Put its numbers beside the larger machine in the same family and the capacity is identical: rims from 10-28", rim widths of 1 1/2-20", tires up to 44" and 150 lbs, the same 36 mm shaft, the same +/-1 gram accuracy and the same 6-9 second cycle.

What you give up is automation, not capability. Data entry on the NTB-550 is manual — the operator measures and keys in the wheel's dimensions instead of letting the machine take them. That is a real difference, and in a high-volume tire shop with staff turnover it is the difference that matters. In a home garage, a collector's shop or a small independent doing a few sets a week, it is a minute of measuring on a job that was never going to be rushed, and it buys you a machine that reaches the same wheels with the same precision.

This is the honest way to choose between the two: pick on throughput and who is operating it, not on what the machine can physically balance.

Manual entry, done properly

Manual data entry has one failure mode and it is worth naming, because knowing it is most of the fix. Every dimension you key in is a dimension you can key in wrong, and a balancer will obediently calculate a perfect correction from bad inputs. A wheel that comes back vibrating after being balanced has usually been balanced against a diameter or an offset that was never right.

So the discipline is small and specific: read the rim's actual diameter rather than trusting what the tire sidewall implies, measure the offset with the gauge rather than estimating it, and take the width off the rim rather than from memory. Do those three things consistently and a manually entered balance is every bit as accurate as an automatically measured one — the electronics downstream are the same. Skip them under time pressure and you will feel it in comebacks, which is precisely why a busy shop should be looking at the Triumph NTB-800 with automatic diameter and offset measurement instead.

Will It Fit?

Modest requirements, but check them rather than assume them; the space and the supply are yours to provide.

  • Assembled size. 28" x 47" x 56". The compact footprint is a large part of the appeal — this is a machine that fits in a working home garage without redesigning the garage around it.
  • Clearance above and beside. The hood needs room to swing up, and an operator needs room to lift a wheel onto the shaft from the side. Do not push it flush into a corner just because the footprint allows.
  • Power. 110 Volt with a 1/4 HP motor. A standard outlet; no dedicated circuit, no electrician.
  • Getting it home. Shipping weight is 325 lbs. That is a pallet, not a pickup-bed lift-by-hand, so plan the unload.
  • Shaft. 36 mm. If you already own cones or a flange plate, check them against that before assuming they transfer.

What 'light-duty' does and does not mean here

The description of this machine as light-duty is about duty cycle and workload, not about the wheels it accepts. Its stated limits — 28" rim diameter, 20" rim width, 44" overall tire diameter, 150 lbs of assembly weight — comfortably cover ordinary passenger cars, crossovers and light trucks, which is the entire range most owners will ever put on it.

Where the distinction bites is volume. A machine built for occasional and small-shop use is not the same as one built to spin every wheel that comes through a four-bay tire store all day, every day. If your reality is a few sets a month, a seasonal swap of winter tires for a family fleet, or a track-day habit, this is the right end of the range. If it is a full tire program, buy up.

Static and dynamic capability, a digital display that prompts through the sequence, and a simplified calibration routine round it out — the intent throughout is a balancer that a competent person can be productive on the first afternoon rather than after a training course.

Perfect For

  • Home garages and enthusiasts. Balance your own wheels after a tire change instead of driving them across town.
  • Collectors. Seasonal and storage rotations on vehicles that rarely leave the building.
  • Small independent shops. Adds a service you currently sublet, at a footprint a small bay can absorb.
  • Track-day and club racers. Balancing your own sets between sessions rather than booking a slot.

What's in the Box

The NTB-550 arrives as a complete electronic balancer with shaft, hood and digital console. Motorcycle wheels need the separate Triumph NTB-AS adapter set, which is not included with this machine. If a specific cone, flange or accessory is important to how you work, ask us to confirm it against your order before it ships.

Certification, stated plainly

The data we hold for this balancer claims no third-party safety listing, so this page will not display one. Should your insurer, landlord or local authority require shop equipment carrying a listing issued by a named independent testing organisation, settle that question before you order — ask us for the machine's documentation and check it against the requirement as written. For most home and small-shop buyers this never comes up; for some commercial premises it does.

Shipping and delivery

Freight to the lower 48 only, palletised. Your freight cost is generated live at checkout from the address you enter, which is why no figure is quoted in this description.

Plan the unload before you order. A crated balancer needs a forklift, a dock, or terminal pickup with a suitable vehicle and a second pair of hands. Residential delivery is available with a residential fee applied at checkout, and collection from our Triumph pickup warehouses is an alternative.

Check the freight before the driver leaves. Damage found after a clean signature is a much weaker claim than damage written onto the bill of lading in front of the person who delivered it. Look at the pallet, the wrap and the corners, note anything at all that looks wrong, take photos, and get in touch with us the same day.

Warranty

The manufacturer's warranty applies; terms are published on our warranty claims page. Please note one condition that catches people out: a component must not be taken apart before the claim is raised. Leave the fault as you found it, photograph it, and contact us. Once a part has been opened, what failed usually can no longer be established, and a claim that would have been honoured cannot be.
