Schulz V-Series 5 HP, 80-Gallon Two-Stage — wired for 208V 3-phase

This listing exists because of one number on the motor plate: 208V. It is the version of the 5 HP V-Series built for a 208V 3-phase service, which is the supply a great many commercial units, strip-mall bays, multi-tenant industrial buildings and newer light-industrial premises actually have — as opposed to the higher three-phase supplies used in heavy industry, or the single-phase power in a domestic garage.

Get that right and the rest is a well-proven machine: a WEG motor, a solid cast iron two-stage pump rated to 175 PSI, an 80-gallon ASME receiver and a magnetic starter mounted and prewired at the factory. Get it wrong and you own a compressor your building cannot run.

Why voltage is the one specification you cannot fix later

Almost everything else about a compressor purchase is recoverable. Too small a tank, add a receiver. Wrong fitting, buy an adaptor. Too long a pipe run, re-plumb it. Voltage is not like that. A three-phase motor is wound for the supply it was ordered for, and a mismatch is not a matter of degree — run on the wrong supply it draws the wrong current, heats up and takes its insulation with it. The fix is a transformer or a new motor, on top of a machine you have already paid freight on.

So before you order, do this: have your electrician measure line-to-line at the panel that will feed the compressor, and confirm it is a 208V 3-phase service rather than assuming from the building age or the label on another machine. It takes five minutes and it is the difference between a delivery and a dispute.

A note on the model number

This listing is published without a model code in its title, and the specification data we hold for it records the model as the configuration description rather than a part number. We have not invented one. If you need the exact Schulz part number for a purchase order, a service parts list or a facilities asset register, ask us and we will confirm it in writing.

What a 3-phase motor does for a compressor

Three-phase power arrives as three supplies offset in time, so the motor is always being pushed by one of them. Torque is continuous instead of pulsing, and the motor needs no start capacitor and no centrifugal starting switch — two of the parts most likely to fail on a single-phase compressor, generally on a cold morning when thick oil and tank pressure make the first start of the day the hardest one.

The current is also shared across three conductors rather than two, so the same work is done with less current in each. That means less heating in the windings under a long duty cycle, less voltage drop down a long run, and a motor that shrugs off the kind of repeated starting a busy shop puts a compressor through.

Will It Fit?

  • Floor: 56 inches by 23 inches — long and narrow, so it wants a wall rather than a corner. Leave working room at the belt guard and clear access to the tank drain.
  • Height: 42 inches. Low enough to live under a rack, a mezzanine or a roller-door track.
  • Weight: 479 lbs. Schulz publishes no slab thickness or concrete rating for this model and none is invented here; on a normal commercial floor it is not a consideration.
  • Power: 208V, 3-phase. The amp draw and breaker fields on the data sheet both read consult a certified electrician — correct, because the breaker depends on the conductor, the run and your local code, and no product page can size it responsibly.
  • Plumbing: 1/2-inch tank outlet. The downstream pipe, not the outlet, is what usually limits pressure at the tool.

Confirming the space, the floor and the supply before ordering is the buyer's responsibility.

Two stages, and what the second one is for

A single-stage pump compresses air once and is done. A two-stage pump compresses it in a large cylinder, passes it to a smaller one, and compresses it again — which is how it reaches a working pressure a single-stage machine cannot, and does it with less heat per stage than doing the whole job in one go.

For a buyer, the payoff is stored energy. High pressure in a large receiver gives a wide band between the pressure that starts the motor and the pressure that stops it, so the machine runs in long, efficient stretches instead of switching on and off every few minutes. Short-cycling is what wears out contactors, motors and pumps; volume and pressure together are the cure.

The pump itself is solid cast iron with its cylinders splayed apart for airflow and deep cooling fins, running oversized main bearings, Swedish steel valves and CNC-machined components, belt driven inside an enclosed guard. Lubrication is splash with a sight glass and no low-oil cut-out, so checking the oil is on your list rather than the machine's. The sheet lists no after-cooler and no air dryer.

Certification, stated plainly

The certification recorded for this compressor is ASME, covering the air receiver and safety valve — a pressure-vessel standard, and the one worth insisting on for the part of the machine that stores the energy.

It is worth naming the boundary rather than letting one certification stand in for several: ASME is not an electrical safety listing and does not certify the machine as an assembly.
