Schulz MCSV Horizontal 5 HP Direct Coupling Compressor, Single Phase

This is the version of the MCSV for rooms with a ceiling problem. Same 5 HP motor, same 80-gallon tank, same directly coupled two-stage cast iron pump as the upright model — but the tank is lying down, so the whole machine stands 42" tall instead of towering over the bench. If you have a mezzanine, a low garage ceiling, a shelf run, a roller door track or a duct in the way, that single dimension is usually the entire buying decision, and it is the reason this configuration exists.

What you trade for it is floor: it wants a 52" by 48" patch of slab rather than a corner. In a garage with a spare wall and 42" of clearance under a storage deck, that is a trade most people are glad to make. It runs on 230V single-phase power, so it does not need a three-phase service.

Will it fit?

Measure the height first, because that is the constraint this model exists to solve. The machine occupies 52" of length and 48" of width and stands 42" high. Add clearance beyond those numbers — the cooling shroud needs air moving past it, and you need to reach the tank drain and the pressure switch without dragging 480 lb across the floor to get at them.

480 lb is also the number that decides how it gets off a truck and into the room. It is not a rolling-it-in-on-a-dolly weight for one person.

On power: it needs a 230V, 1-Phase supply. We are not publishing an amp draw or a breaker size, because our specification sheet for this model does not give one — it says to consult a certified electrician, and we would rather repeat that than invent a figure. Sizing the circuit, the breaker and the wire run is the buyer's responsibility and it is a job for a licensed electrician who has looked at your panel, not for a product page.

Why horizontal changes more than the height

A vertical receiver puts most of its mass a long way off the ground on a small base, which is why upright compressors are fussy about a flat slab and anchoring. Lying the same tank down drops the centre of gravity to roughly knee height and spreads the load over a much longer footprint. The machine is calmer on startup, easier to shim level, and far less alarming to move.

It also puts every service point at a sensible working height. The drain, the gauge and the switch are where your hands are rather than at eye level or on the floor, which sounds like a small thing until you are draining condensate every week for ten years.

Direct coupling: fewer parts that wear

The pump is bolted straight to the motor. There is no belt to stretch, glaze, slip or snap, no pulley alignment to hold and no guard to take off before you can look at anything. A slipping belt is the classic slow failure on a shop compressor — output drops for months before anything actually breaks, and nobody notices because the machine still runs. Removing the belt removes that whole failure mode, along with the routine tension checks that go with it.

Direct coupling is also what keeps this package physically compact. Losing the flywheel and pulley set is part of how an 80-gallon two-stage machine ends up 42" tall.

Two-stage compression and 175 PSI

Compressing in two steps rather than one lets each cylinder work less hard for the same result, which means lower cylinder temperatures and slower wear. The visible benefit is pressure: the pump is rated to 175 PSI, and a tank filled to 175 PSI holds materially more usable air than the same tank at a lower setting. In practice that is what keeps the pump from cutting in every ninety seconds when someone picks up an impact gun.

The pump is solid cast iron, oil lubricated on a splash system. Note that our specification data records no oil sight glass and no low-oil shut-off, so checking the oil is a manual, scheduled job — nothing on the machine will do it for you or stop the motor if the level drops.

Confirm the model designation before you raise the order

This machine is published under two designations: the product title and the body copy call it the MCSV, while the heading and one specification field call it the MCSZ. If the exact designation matters to you — for a purchase order, a warranty registration or a parts lookup — confirm it with us before you order and we will read it off the unit in stock.

Perfect for

  • Home and hobby shops under a low ceiling, a mezzanine or a storage deck, where an upright tank simply will not stand up.
  • Service bays with wall space to spare and single-phase power only.
  • Anyone replacing a smaller compressor who wants the pump to stop running continuously without rewiring the building.
  • Shops that move equipment around and would rather not walk a top-heavy 480 lb tank across a slab.

What's in the box

The compressor as specified: two-stage cast iron pump direct coupled to the motor on the 80-gallon horizontal tank, with the magnetic starter, pressure gauge and tank drain fitted. No air dryer and no aftercooler are included — both are recorded as not fitted — so budget separately if your work needs dry air. Hose, fittings, air-line filtration and the electrical connection are not supplied.

We have deliberately left the free-air delivery figure off this table. The value in our data for this configuration is not carried with a unit we can verify, and a delivery rating published without knowing the pressure it was measured at is worse than no rating. Ask us and we will read it off the manufacturer's sheet for you.

Certification, stated plainly

The certification our data records for this machine is ASME, which is the pressure-vessel code covering the tank. No further third-party safety listing is claimed for this machine, so none is printed here. Insured commercial sites, institutional facilities and some local jurisdictions do have listing requirements written down. If that applies to you, ask us before ordering and we will confirm what is on the unit's data plate.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, lower 48 states, priced live at checkout for your actual delivery address instead of estimated on this page. You need a way to get 480 lb off the back of a truck — forklift, dock, or a collection from the carrier's terminal, which is always an option and often the easiest one. Residential delivery carries a residential fee and the checkout shows it before you pay. Pickup is available at Acworth, GA.

Inspect it before signing. Any dent in the tank, bent shroud, damaged crating or missing carton goes on the delivery receipt in writing, at the time of delivery, with photographs. Signing clean and calling later is the one sequence that reliably fails.

Warranty

Coverage runs 1 year, consumer and commercial, on the manufacturer's stated terms. Do not open up the pump, starter or pressure switch before a claim has been raised — a disassembled machine is routinely treated as out of warranty no matter how correct the diagnosis turns out to be. Call, text or chat with us on 866-774-7743 and we will tell you what the manufacturer wants to see first.
