Schulz L-Series 10120HL40X-3 10 HP 120-Gallon Two-Stage Air Compressor (460V 3-Phase)

This is the 460V build of the L-Series 10 HP compressor, and the motor is the reason to care about it. Schulz specifies a WEG T.E.F.C. motor in a NEMA 4 enclosure on the L-Series - a rating for enclosures that keep out windblown dust, splashed and hose-directed water. That is a deliberate choice for equipment that lives in a working industrial building rather than a clean utility room, and it is not the specification you find on a general-purpose shop compressor.

Pair that motor with 460V supply and you get the machine most industrial buildings are actually set up for: at the higher voltage the same 10 HP draws proportionally less current, so feeders are smaller, voltage drop over a long run from the panel is less of a problem, and the starter and disconnect gear are working comfortably. If your building is wired at 460V, this is the version you want; the lower-voltage builds of the same pump are listed separately.

What T.E.F.C. and NEMA 4 actually buy you

T.E.F.C. stands for totally enclosed, fan cooled. The windings are sealed away from the surrounding air and a shaft-mounted fan blows over the outside of the frame to carry heat away. An open motor, by contrast, cools itself by pulling shop air straight through the windings - which also means pulling through whatever is in that air. In a shop that grinds, sands, sweeps or blasts, an open motor slowly packs itself with conductive dust; a sealed one does not. The NEMA 4 enclosure rating takes that further, into water and dust ingress from washdown and weather.

None of that makes the compressor faster. What it does is make the motor a part you stop thinking about, which on a machine hard-wired into a wall is the property with the highest value.

The pump

Below the motor is an L-Series solid cast-iron two-stage pump on belt drive, with Swedish steel valves, oversized main bearings and CNC-machined components, feeding a 120-gallon horizontal receiver through a 1" outlet at up to 175 PSI. An after-cooler is fitted, so much of the moisture in the air condenses at the compressor and can be drained at the tank rather than turning up in a hose. Lubrication is splash with a sight glass, checked by eye; the specification block lists no low-oil shutdown, so oil level is a scheduled human task on this machine.

Will it fit, and will it run?

Footprint and mass: 78" long, 29" wide, 47" tall, 855 lbs. A horizontal receiver keeps the whole assembly under four feet tall, which suits buildings with overhead conveyors, ductwork or a mezzanine, and makes the machine easy to walk past. It is the length you have to design around.

On power, one thing is the buyer's to establish and cannot be answered from a web page: whether 460V 3-Phase is present at the point where the compressor will stand, and what breaker and conductors your run requires. Schulz explicitly refers amp draw and breaker sizing to a certified electrician, and we will not substitute a guess for that instruction. Also confirm the slab is flat and sound, and that the route in clears 855 lbs on a pallet.

Specifications

Certification, stated plainly

The receiver and safety valve are stamped to the ASME pressure-vessel code. We name it because the product genuinely carries it, and we would rather explain its limits than let it be read as more than it is: it certifies the pressure vessel and its relief device, full stop. It is not a third-party listing of the complete electrical assembly and it will not satisfy an electrical inspector on its own. NEMA 4 is likewise an enclosure rating describing ingress protection, not an approval of the machine as a whole. Where a policy or contract names a specific listing for powered equipment, verify the wording against this unit before you commit.

Shipping and delivery

Freight to the lower 48 states, rated live at checkout for the address you enter. The shipment weighs 855 lbs and arrives palletised on a truck. Unloading is the receiver's responsibility - a forklift, a dock, or terminal pickup, which many buyers with no dock choose deliberately. Residential delivery is offered and adds a residential fee at checkout. Warranty

1 year on the unit, 2 years on the pump, applying equally to consumer and commercial owners. Do not take a suspect pump or motor apart before the claim is raised; disassembly before inspection is the most common way owners lose cover they were entitled to. Note the serial number on arrival, keep the invoice, and log oil changes and belt checks - a documented maintenance history settles most claims quickly and quietly.
