Schulz 580VV20X-1: 80 gallons of stored air on a 31.5 by 25.2 inch footprint

A shop floor is the resource you never get more of, and this is the 80-gallon Schulz that asks for the least of it. The tank stands upright, so the machine occupies a patch of floor 31.5 inches by 25.2 inches — about the plan area of a domestic refrigerator — and puts its volume in the air above instead of along a wall. At 480 lbs it is also the lightest 80-gallon unit in this Schulz group, which matters more at delivery than it does afterwards.

Driving it is a 5 HP WEG motor on 230V 1-phase power and a solid cast iron two-stage V-Series pump rated to 175 PSI, with a prewired magnetic starter fitted and wired at the factory.

Vertical versus horizontal, in terms you can measure

The choice between an upright and a lying-down tank is not about performance — the pump, the motor and the stored volume are the same argument either way. It is about which dimension of your building you have spare.

An upright machine wants ceiling and gives back floor: a corner, behind a lift column, the end of a bench run, the dead space beside a roller door. A horizontal machine wants a long wall and a low roof. Shops that regret the choice almost always picked on price or availability, then found the one dimension they were short of was the one the compressor needed. Measure first — a tank is not something you reposition once it is piped in.

Will It Fit?

• Floor: 31.5 inches by 25.2 inches. Add walking room on at least one side for the belt guard and the tank drain — a drain you cannot reach is a drain that never gets opened, and standing water is what rots a tank from the inside.
• Height: 78 inches. Check the lowest thing above the chosen spot rather than the ceiling itself: a beam, a duct, a door track or a light. You also want head room above the machine for filter changes and belt access.
• Weight: 480 lbs concentrated on a small base. Schulz publishes no minimum concrete thickness or slab rating for this model and we are not going to invent one. On a poured shop floor this is unremarkable; on a suspended floor or a light residential pad, get it checked before the truck is booked.
• Power: 230V, 1-phase. Both the amp draw and recommended breaker fields on the Schulz data sheet read consult a certified electrician, which is the right answer — the breaker depends on your conductor, run length and code, and no web page can size it for you.
• Plumbing: the tank outlet is 1/2-inch. Size the pipe run downstream for the flow you intend to draw, not for the fitting on the tank.

A number we are not going to quote

You will find a delivered-air figure for this compressor on plenty of pages. In the data Schulz supplies us for this particular listing, the output value is recorded without a unit beside it, and the pressure it is rated at is recorded in a separate field. Rather than guess which pairing is right and publish a flow figure that might be wrong for your job, we have left it off. What we can state from the data is the pump's 175 PSI maximum. If delivered flow is what decides your purchase — and for blasting, sanding or spray work it should be — contact us and we will confirm the rated figure with Schulz in writing before you buy.

Why a slow pump outlives a fast one

Two-stage cast iron pumps like this one are built to turn slowly. That sounds like a disadvantage until you count what a revolution costs: every turn is a piston reversing direction twice, rings scrubbing a bore, valves slamming shut. Halve the speed and you roughly halve the number of those events per hour of running, and you cut the heat they generate.

Heat is the mechanism behind nearly every way a compressor pump dies — it thins the oil, cooks the valve plates and bakes carbon onto the rings. The V-Series answers it in three ways at once. The cylinders are splayed apart so air can move between them, each barrel carries deep cooling fins, and the block is solid cast iron, which pulls heat out of the combustion of work and damps vibration on the way. Add oversized main bearings, Swedish steel valves and CNC-machined internals and you have a pump specified to run for years rather than to win a spec-sheet comparison.

The starter is already wired, and that is worth money

A magnetic starter comes mounted and prewired here. Without one, somebody has to select, source, mount and wire a starter and its overload before the machine can be switched on safely and legally — an hour or two of an electrician's time plus parts. With one, the electrician brings a supply to a terminal and commissions it. It also means the compressor trips properly on an overload instead of cooking a winding.

The data for this compressor lists ASME, covering the air receiver and its safety valve. That is a pressure-vessel standard and it is the right one to care about on a tank holding this much air at working pressure.

It is not, however, an electrical safety listing, and it is not a third-party approval of the assembled machine. We would rather draw that line ourselves than let one certification imply several. If an insurer, an inspector or a company standard requires a specific listing on fixed shop equipment, ask us before ordering and we will confirm in writing what this unit carries.

Have the unload sorted first. At 480 lbs crated this is the lightest 80-gallon machine here, but it is still a forklift or pallet-jack item and no driver will move it into your building.
