If your ceiling is low, your garage door track is in the way, or you want the compressor tucked along a wall or under a mezzanine instead of standing in the middle of the floor, that number is the whole decision.

Everything above the tank is standard V-Series: a 5 HP WEG motor on 230V 1-phase power, a solid cast iron two-stage pump delivering 20 CFM at 175 PSI, and an 80-gallon ASME air receiver. The unusual part is the package it comes in.

Before you plan the space: confirm the tank orientation

Published figures for this machine's tank orientation differ, and you should know that before you measure a wall.

• Floor: 56 inches by 23 inches. That is a longer, narrower plan than an upright machine, so it wants a wall run rather than a corner. Leave access along the belt-guard side for servicing and around the tank drain.
• Weight: 524 lbs. Schulz publishes no minimum slab thickness or concrete rating for this model, so we are not going to state one. On a normal shop floor it is a non-issue; on a suspended floor or a thin residential pad, check before delivery day.
• Power: 230V, 1-phase, with a mounted and prewired magnetic starter. The amp draw and breaker fields on the Schulz data sheet both read consult a certified electrician — the correct breaker depends on your run length, conductor and local code, so size it on site rather than from any web page.
• Plumbing: a 1/2-inch tank outlet. Whatever you run downstream, the pipe is what decides delivered pressure at the tool; undersized line kills the benefit of a big tank faster than anything else.

What 20 CFM at 175 PSI actually means for your bay

The two numbers do different jobs. 175 PSI is what the tank will hold; 20 CFM is what the pump will keep replacing. Pressure is stored energy, flow is sustained work, and it is flow that decides whether a job stalls.

A two-stage pump gets to that pressure in two bites — a large low-pressure cylinder feeds a smaller high-pressure one — which is why two-stage machines reach 175 PSI while single-stage units typically top out much lower. The practical value of storing air at high pressure in a large tank is that the usable band between cut-in and cut-out is wide, so the motor spends less of its life starting and stopping. Short-cycling is what kills compressors, and tank volume plus two-stage pressure is the cure for it.

The V-cylinder pump and why the layout matters

The V-Series takes its name from the angle between its cylinders. Splaying them apart opens up airflow between the two barrels and leaves room for deeper cooling fins on each, so the block sheds heat instead of storing it. A cooler pump means cooler discharge air, slower oil oxidation and longer valve life — heat is the mechanism behind almost every way a compressor pump dies.

The block is solid cast iron rather than aluminium: heavier, but it conducts heat away and damps vibration. Inside are oversized main bearings, Swedish steel valves and CNC-machined components; outside, notched belts run inside an enclosed guard that keeps the drive away from hands and sleeves. Lubrication is a splash system with an oil sight glass so a level check is a glance, and there is no low-oil shut-off, which makes that glance part of your weekly routine. Note also that this model's spec lists no after-cooler and no air dryer, so downstream moisture treatment is on you if the work needs it.
