Schulz 360VV15-1: an oil-free pump turning at 620 RPM, on a 19.7 inch footprint

This is the quiet-corner machine of the Schulz oil-free range. The pump turns at 620 RPM — slower than any other compressor on this shelf, and considerably slower than the larger oil-free models — and the upright tank stands on a base just 19.7 inches wide. It is a 3 HP unit on 230V 1-phase power with a 60-gallon vertical steel tank, rated at 15 CFM at 90 PSI with a ceiling of 120 PSI.

Its certification field is also the only one in this Schulz group that carries a second entry, which is worth a paragraph of its own below.

620 RPM: slow is the entire design

Everything else about an oil-free compressor follows from pump speed. Running dry means the piston rings and cylinder walls do their work without a film of oil between them, and the thing that punishes that arrangement is rubbing speed — surface against surface, thousands of times a minute, generating heat exactly where you have the least protection from it.

So a serious oil-free pump is built slow. At 620 RPM this one turns at a fraction of the rate of a typical direct-drive machine, which means fewer direction reversals per hour, fewer valve events, less frictional heat and materially less noise reaching the room. The cast iron cylinders with deep fins and space between them take away what heat is still produced. Speed, mass and cooling area are one decision here, not three features.

The trade you accept for it is size. A slow pump moves less air per revolution than a fast one, which is why an oil-free machine is physically larger and heavier than an oil-lubricated compressor of the same output. At 435 lbs for 15 CFM, that is exactly what you are looking at, and it is the correct trade for the job this machine is built to do.

What oil-free removes from your week

Air quality is the headline reason to buy oil-free and it is real — nothing can carry over from the compression chamber because there is nothing there to carry. But the reason owners keep buying them is duller: there is no oil. No level to check, no annual change, no crankcase to drain, no waste oil to store, and no ruined morning discovering the level went low months ago. In an occupied building — a surgery, an office plant room, a lab — that matters more than in a workshop, because the machine sits somewhere nobody visits, and maintenance that needs a visit tends not to happen.

What remains is short: drain the tank on a schedule and watch the intake filter. Dry-running components tolerate no oil quite happily and grit very badly.

The certification line on this model reads differently

The specification we hold for this compressor records two entries where its siblings record one: ASME and UL. Every other Schulz machine in this group lists ASME alone.

Here is the honest reading. ASME is a pressure-vessel standard, covering the air receiver and safety valve, and it is the one that matters most on any compressor because a tank failure is the failure with no recovery. The second entry is a single line in a data field, without a scope, a mark number or a document reference attached, so we can tell you it is what the manufacturer's data says and no more than that. It is not an approval of the machine as a whole simply because it appears on the sheet, and we are not going to let a two-letter field do more work than it can bear.

If a specific listing or approval is a requirement — for a clinic inspection, an insurer, a client's facility standard or a tender — ask us before you order and we will get the scope confirmed by Schulz in writing. That is a five-minute conversation now and an expensive problem after installation.

Confirm the regulator before you order

Published figures for the regulator differ: the description carried on this page lists a built-in regulator switch, while the manufacturer specification field we hold records the regulator as No. Both are shown here. If a built-in regulator decides your purchase, confirm it with us before ordering — we will get it straight from Schulz. A regulator is easy enough to fit downstream, but you should know what is in the crate.

• Floor: 32.3 inches by 19.7 inches. The narrowest footprint of any compressor in this Schulz range, which is often what decides whether it goes in a plant room or a cupboard at all.
• Height: 72.8 inches. Upright, so check the lowest obstruction above the chosen spot and leave room to reach the filter.
• Weight: 435 lbs on a small base, so the load is concentrated. Schulz publishes no floor or slab specification for this model and none is invented here; on a ground-floor slab it is routine, on a suspended floor get an opinion first.
• Power: 230V, 1-phase, with a 30 Amp breaker recommended by Schulz. That lighter electrical requirement is often the real reason this model is chosen over a larger one — a building that cannot spare the capacity for a bigger machine can usually feed this one. Have a certified electrician confirm the breaker against your conductor, run length and local code; a manufacturer recommendation is a starting point, not a calculation.
• Plumbing: a 1/2-inch tank outlet.

Working pressure, and what it will not do

Rated flow is 15 CFM at 90 PSI, with a maximum of 120 PSI. That covers dental and laboratory equipment, pneumatic actuators, blow-off and cleaning, air tools and general shop work comfortably.

It will not cover work that needs the top of the pressure band — the oil-lubricated two-stage machines in this range go considerably higher, and if a plasma cutter or a high-pressure test rig is on your list, buy one of those instead. Being told that before you pay freight is worth more than a page that agrees with everything.

Arrange the unload before you order. Crated, this is a 435 lb pallet — a forklift or pallet jack on firm ground, or a trailer and a trip to the freight terminal. The driver brings it to the back of the truck and no further. Residential delivery is available and carries a fee, shown at checkout. Inspect the crate with the driver and note any damage on the bill of lading before signing; once you sign clean, a claim becomes very hard to pursue.
