Most compressors in this class arrive as a machine plus a shopping list. This one does not. The 10120HW40X-3 leaves the factory with its magnetic starter already mounted and prewired to the motor and an inlet air filter fitted, which means the electrician who shows up on install day is wiring a disconnect to a finished control, not building one. On a 230V 3-Phase machine that is not a small convenience - a starter bought separately, mounted crooked on a wall and wired by whoever was available is one of the more common reasons a three-phase motor gets ruined in its first year.
Everything else about the unit follows the same logic: a 10 HP motor, a two-stage solid cast-iron pump turning slowly under belt drive, and a 120-gallon horizontal receiver, sized so the pump spends more of the day stopped than running.
Ready to wire, not ready to assemble
The starter is the part worth dwelling on because it is the part buyers price separately and then forget. A magnetic starter does two jobs: it lets a small control signal switch a large motor safely, and it drops the motor out if a phase fails or the current climbs where it should not. Three-phase motors do not fail politely when they lose a leg - they keep trying, they overheat, and the failure looks like a pump problem until somebody meters it. Having that protection mounted, wired and matched to the motor from the factory removes an entire category of installation error.
An inlet air filter is listed as fitted as well. That matters more than it sounds: everything the pump ingests, it grinds. Clean intake air is about the least expensive life extension a cast-iron pump can be given.
Will it fit, and will it run?
The machine is 78.3" long, 28" wide and 51.2" tall and weighs 836 lbs. It is a horizontal tank, so it is long and low rather than tall - easier to move through a standard doorway on a pallet jack, and harder to tuck into a corner. Work out the long dimension against the wall you have in mind before you order, and remember that the useful footprint is bigger than the machine, because you need to reach the belt guard, the drain and the sight glass.
Power is 230V 3-Phase. Schulz declines to publish an amp draw or a breaker size and tells you to consult a certified electrician for both; we pass that on unchanged, because the honest answer depends on your service, your run length and your local code, and a guess printed on a web page is worth nothing to an inspector. It remains the buyer's responsibility to confirm that three-phase power is actually available at the intended location - not merely in the building - and that the slab under it is level and sound.
Why a slow pump beats a fast one
Two-stage compression splits the work: the air is compressed once, cooled, then compressed again. Splitting it that way lets the pump reach and hold higher pressure without the cylinder temperatures that destroy rings and valves. Belt drive is what lets the pump turn slower than the motor, and slow is the whole point - lower piston speeds, lower temperatures, less oil carried over into the air, and a pump that is repairable rather than disposable.
The construction supports that: a solid cast-iron block with a V-cylinder layout and deep cooling fins, Swedish steel valves, oversized main bearings and CNC-machined components. The oil system is splash lubrication with a sight glass, so the level is checked by eye. There is no low-oil shutdown on this model, which is worth knowing rather than discovering.
Air flow, and why we have not printed a number
Free-air delivery at 175 PSI is published by Schulz in the brochure for this model. We have deliberately not restated a flow figure in this description, because our own catalogue records it in a form we cannot verify the units of, and a compressor is bought on flow - it is the one number a wrong page would cost you real money on. Certification, stated plainly
The receiver and safety valve carry the ASME pressure-vessel code stamp. That is a real and meaningful certification, and it is also a narrow one: it speaks to the tank holding pressure safely and to the relief device that protects it. It is not a third-party safety listing covering the completed electrical assembly, and it does not stand in for the electrical inspection your jurisdiction may require on a hard-wired three-phase machine. If a policy, a lease or a contract you are working under names a specific listing for shop equipment, confirm the wording before you buy rather than assuming a pressure-vessel stamp answers it.

Freight only, to the lower 48 states, with the cost quoted live at checkout once we know where it is going. At 836 lbs this arrives on a pallet by truck; the driver's job ends at the tail of the trailer. Have a forklift or a dock ready, or choose to collect from the freight terminal instead. Warranty
Coverage runs 1 year on the complete unit and 2 years on the pump, and applies to consumer and commercial use. Leave a suspected failure assembled: opening a pump or motor before the claim is registered usually voids the cover, and it removes the evidence that would have supported it. Keep the purchase record, the model and the serial number together somewhere off the machine, and log the oil changes - documented maintenance is what turns a warranty conversation into a warranty replacement.
