Robinair 34788NI R-134a Recovery, Recycling and Recharge Machine

Most A/C machines are bought at one specification and kept at it. The 34788NI is unusual in that it has a published upgrade path: add the ROB80211VCI Wireless Master Kit later and the machine gains Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a USB adapter, an SD card for software updates, and — the part that actually changes how the machine is used — an OBDII module that reads the vehicle's VIN and retrieves its refrigerant and oil capacities automatically.

That makes it a sensible purchase in two different situations: as a straightforward, fully automatic R-134a service machine now, and as a connected one when the budget or the workload justifies it. It is part of Robinair's Premier series and recovery is rated at up to 98.5%.

The upgrade that matters: capacities from the VIN

Charging an A/C system correctly depends on knowing how much refrigerant and oil it takes, and that figure comes from a lookup — a label under the bonnet, a manual, or a technician's memory. Every one of those routes has a failure mode, and an undercharge or an overcharge is the most common way an otherwise correct A/C service goes wrong.

With the OBDII module fitted, the machine reads the VIN and retrieves the capacities itself. The lookup stops being a step someone performs and becomes something the machine does, which removes the transcription error rather than asking people to be careful. If you would rather not add hardware, the same information can be bought as data: the optional ROB34412-F refrigerant and oil database provides vehicle-specific capacity information without the wireless kit.

What it does without any options at all

As shipped, this is a fully automatic machine. Program a complete cycle — recovery, vacuum, leak test and recharge — and it runs without a technician operating panel valves, or run individual functions on their own when a job only needs one. A large graphical display carries step-by-step guidance through the service, and visual and audible alerts say when a stage has finished or when something needs attention, so the machine can be left working in a bay without anyone watching it.

The automations are the practical ones. Oil management tracks how much oil was removed and reinjects the correct amount, rather than leaving the quantity to judgement. Automatic refrigerant refill maintains the internal supply and warns when the supply tanks need replacing. A vacuum leak test monitors the vacuum after evacuation and identifies a system that will not hold before refrigerant is put into it. Automatic air purge removes non-condensable gases without any valve operation.

Two controls worth knowing about

Vacuum time is programmable up to 99 minutes and the display shows the time remaining. That combination is more useful than it sounds: a long evacuation is sometimes exactly what a wet system needs, and being able to see how long is left is what lets a bay be scheduled around it instead of interrupted by it.

Charging is flexible — high-side, low-side or dual-side — which is what allows the machine to follow the manufacturer's procedure for the vehicle in front of you rather than imposing one procedure on every car.

Knowing what the machine has been doing

The refrigerant management system tracks refrigerant usage and filter life and raises maintenance alerts as they fall due. Filter life is the one shops let slip, and it matters: a filter run past its rating stops removing moisture and acid, at which point the machine is circulating contamination instead of removing it. Having the machine keep the count removes the argument about when it was last changed.

Perfect For

  • Shops with a large R-134a workload — still the majority of vehicles on the road — that do not need a 1234yf machine yet.
  • Buyers who want a route to a connected machine without paying for connectivity on day one.
  • Workshops servicing hybrids alongside conventional vehicles; the machine is specified for hybrid A/C systems.
  • Bays where the machine is left to run while the technician works on something else.
  • Operations that bill A/C work and want printed service reports, via the optional printer.

What's in the Box, and what to order alongside it

The machine as described above, with its automatic functions, graphical display and refrigerant management system included. Everything below is separate and worth deciding on at the same time rather than later:

  • ROB80211VCI Wireless Master Kit — Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, USB adapter, SD card for software updates, and the OBDII module that reads the VIN.
  • ROB34412-F — refrigerant and oil database with vehicle-specific capacity data.
  • ROB30038 — printer, for service reports produced at the machine.
  • ROB80212 — Bluetooth temperature probes for monitoring vent temperatures and generating detailed service reports; ROB80211TMP is the temperature-focused wireless kit.
  • ROB34724 replacement filter and ROB13172 maintenance kit — the consumables to keep on the shelf.
  • ROB17499 — dust cover.

Refrigerant is not supplied with the machine.

Certification, and the limits of what we know

Our product data for this machine describes what it does and how well it recovers. It does not name a refrigerant-equipment standard or a third-party listing mark, and we have not written one in — not because we doubt the machine, but because a standards claim is the last thing on a product page that should ever be filled in by inference. Other machines in this same catalogue do carry published standards in their data, and where they do we quote them; here there is nothing to quote. If your insurer, a fleet contract, a dealer programme or a local requirement asks for documented equipment compliance before this machine can be used, ask us first and we will obtain the manufacturer's documentation for the unit that would ship to you.

Shipping and Delivery

This machine travels by freight within the lower 48 states; it is not a parcel shipment. The unload is the thing to arrange in advance — a dock, a forklift, or a collection from the freight terminal, which has the advantage of being a time you choose rather than a window you wait through. Deliveries to residential addresses are accepted and carry a residential fee, which is quoted live at checkout rather than printed here, since freight pricing changes. When the truck arrives, look the crate over before you sign for it and write any damage onto the bill of lading in front of the driver. A signature with nothing written on it is treated as a clean receipt, and that is a difficult position to argue from afterwards.

Warranty

The manufacturer's warranty applies; its terms are published on our warranty claims page, which is deliberately where they live so you are reading the current document. If something fails, do not take the machine apart first. The scale, the sealed refrigerant path and the filter assembly are the components a claim is assessed on, an opened machine is routinely refused, and an internal inspection carried out in good faith is one of the more common ways a valid claim is lost. Note the message on the display, stop using the unit and get in touch.
