Product Description

Ranger RSC-2TF: A Shop Crane That Stops Owning Your Floor

An engine hoist is used for perhaps an hour and then stands in the way for a month. That is the problem the RSC-2TF is built around: it folds. The legs and the mast collapse down so the crane stores against a wall or in a corner instead of parking itself in the middle of the bay, and it does that without giving up the heavy steel construction or the telescoping boom that make it worth owning in the first place.

For a two-bay independent shop or a home garage, that single design decision is usually the difference between buying a crane and making do with a leaning bar and a prayer. Floor space is the scarcest thing most workshops have.

Will It Fit Your Shop?

The base is 69 in. (1,753 mm) long, and the legs need to roll under the vehicle or the engine stand you are lifting over — so the clearance that matters is not your bay width but the height beneath whatever you are reaching under. Check that a caster and leg will pass below the front valance or the bumper of the vehicles you actually work on.

Above you, the boom's maximum height runs from 80 in. up to 93 in. (2,362 mm) depending on how far the boom is telescoped, and you need clearance above that figure for the hook, the chain or load leveler, and the engine itself. A residential garage ceiling is often tighter than people assume once a hoist is at full height with a load hanging from it. Measure before you order; that is the buyer's check to make.

Floor requirements are simple and non-negotiable: flat, hard, level and swept. Steel casters on a heavy crane carrying a suspended load want a smooth surface, and a load on a hook is a pendulum. The front casters include a safety brake to stop the crane wandering while you work. No power supply is needed — this is a hand-pumped hydraulic crane, so it works anywhere you can stand.

Capacity: Read the Boom Chart, Not Just the Headline

Ranger rates the RSC-2TF as a 2 ton crane, which the listing states as 4,000 lbs of lifting capacity. The published specifications also give a boom capacity range, topping out at 4,400 lbs (1,996 kg) at the shortest boom position and falling away substantially as the boom extends.

Two things follow, and both are worth reading twice.

First: those two figures do not agree with each other. The headline rating and the top of the boom chart are different numbers, and we are not going to quietly pick whichever one flatters the product. Both are printed here, attributed to where they come from — the marketing rating and the specification table respectively — and if your load is anywhere near either one, contact us and we will confirm the correct rating for your application against the manufacturer before you buy. Guessing on a suspended load is the wrong kind of optimism.

Second, and this is true of every telescoping crane regardless of which number you use: capacity falls as the boom extends. The rating applies at the shortest boom setting only. Reaching further out over a fender multiplies the leverage on the mast and the counterweight of the crane itself, so the safe load at full extension is a fraction of the safe load pulled in. The boom capacities row in the specifications is the chart that governs, not the model name.

The Telescoping Boom and Its Four Positions

The boom telescopes from 40 in. to 63 in. (1,016 mm to 1,600 mm) and pins at four positions. In practice you use the shortest setting that lets the hook reach the lifting point — that gives you the highest available capacity and the most stable geometry — and step out only when the engine bay or the vehicle's nose forces you to.

The boom itself is reinforced to increase strength and eliminate flex. Flex is not a comfort issue on a crane: a boom that deflects under load moves the load sideways as it lifts, and a swinging engine near a painted fender is an expensive kind of exciting. A rugged hydraulic cylinder does the lifting, and the crane finishes with a heavy steel hook fitted with a safety latch, so a chain cannot jump off the hook as the load settles or is set down.

Folding, Mobility and Stability

Heavy-duty steel casters let one person position the crane, including under a car, and the wide base is what keeps a raised load from tipping the machine. That is why the RSC-2TF's 69 in. (1,753 mm) base is not a number to trade away for compactness in use — the compactness comes at the end of the job, when it folds. Its own weight tells the same story: 248 lbs (112 kg) of crane, shipped in a package measuring 62 in. x 42 in. x 16 in. (1,549 mm x 1,066 mm x 406 mm). That mass is not overbuild, it is the counterweight that keeps the boom side down.

Perfect For

  • Independent repair shops pulling engines and transmissions in bays that have to go back to being bays.
  • Restoration and project builds where the drivetrain comes out once and goes back in months later.
  • Home garages where the crane must disappear between jobs or it cannot be owned at all.
  • Fleet and agricultural shops lifting pumps, gearboxes and implements as well as engines.
  • Mobile and race support operations that need a crane that folds into a trailer.

What's in the Box

  • RSC-2TF folding shop crane with heavy steel construction
  • Telescoping boom with four pin positions
  • Rugged hydraulic cylinder and pump
  • Heavy-duty steel casters, with a safety brake on the front pair
  • Heavy steel hook with safety latch

That is the manufacturer's stated content. Chains, slings and a load leveler are separate items — a leveler is the one most people wish they had ordered at the same time.

Certification, Stated Honestly

Ranger claims no third-party safety listing or approval scheme for this crane in the data we hold, and we will not imply one. That is worth stating plainly rather than leaving to inference, because lifting equipment is precisely the category where written policies bite: some insurers, corporate and fleet safety programs, training institutions and municipal inspections require independently listed lifting gear, and some also require periodic inspection records for it. If you are subject to a standard like that, read what it actually requires before you buy, and ask us if you would like help matching the wording to this machine.

Shipping and Delivery

Shipped as freight within the lower 48 states, at a rate quoted live at checkout. At 248 lbs (112 kg) this is not a parcel: someone at the delivery address must be able to receive and unload it, or arrange terminal collection. Residential deliveries carry an additional fee, shown before you pay. Warehouse pickup is available at our published pickup locations.

Inspect the shipment before signing. Note any damage or shifted load on the bill of lading at the moment of delivery and photograph it while the driver is present. A signed clean bill makes a claim very difficult afterwards — and a mast or boom that took a knock in transit is not something to lift an engine with.

Warranty

Ranger publishes the warranty for this product as a downloadable document, and that document governs, so we do not paraphrase a term here. Download it from the product page and read the exclusions before you buy if coverage is part of your decision.

If you need to claim, do not disassemble the crane or open the cylinder first — self-diagnosis is the most common reason a legitimate claim is refused. Photograph the fault and call us before anything comes apart.
