Description
-Ranger R980XR and DST2420 Wheel Service Package
This is the listing in the family that actually puts numbers on the question everybody asks first: will it take my customers' wheels? Internal clamping, external clamping, tire width, tire diameter and assembly weight are all published for this package, and they are printed below. It is also the listing where we owe you a caveat about where those numbers came from, so that section is on the page too rather than buried in a datasheet.
The published range
| Internal clamping | 10" - 30" |
|---|---|
| External clamping | 11" - 24" |
| Tire width | 2" - 18" |
| Maximum tire diameter | 47 inches |
| Maximum wheel assembly | 145 lbs |
| Balancer shaft, as listed here | 36 mm |
The caveat, before you use those numbers
The source copy for this listing attributes every figure above to the tire changer. Two of them almost certainly do not belong there. A maximum wheel-assembly weight of 145 lbs is the kind of limit a balancer's spindle sets, not a changer's turntable, and the 36 mm shaft quoted here does not agree with the shaft size we publish for this same balancer model on its other listing in our catalogue. We have not reconciled either point against a manufacturer datasheet, and we are not going to silently pick whichever version sounds better.
So treat the table as the range published for the package as a whole, not as a per-machine specification. If one of these limits is the thing your decision turns on — a heavy commercial assembly near 145 lbs, a rim at the outer edge of the 24" external clamping range, or a set of cones you already own that has to match the shaft — ask us before you order and we will get the answer confirmed for the specific units that would ship to you. That is a short conversation, and it is a great deal better than a machine that will not take the wheel you bought it for.
Reading the clamping figures properly
Internal and external clamping are two different grips, which is why the ranges differ. Clamping internally means the jaws push outwards against the inside of the rim flange, which reaches larger diameters and keeps the jaws away from the visible face — the usual choice on alloys. Clamping externally means the jaws grip the outer edge, which is what you fall back to on a rim whose inner lip will not take a jaw. Internal reaches to 30" here; external stops at 24". If a large-diameter wheel is normal work for you, it will be an internally clamped job, and it is worth knowing that in advance rather than at the machine.
The 2" to 18" tire width span is broad, and the wide end is what matters — an 18" section is a genuinely wide tire, well past what a passenger car brings in. The 47 inch maximum diameter is the outer boundary on the overall assembly.
The R980XR changer
The changer is the swing-arm model without a powered assist tower. The mount and demount head swings clear of the wheel to the side rather than tilting back on a column, so the machine needs no clearance behind it and can be placed against a wall — a real consideration when a bay has already been measured twice. Leaving the assist tower off is a positioning decision: it suits shops whose tire mix is ordinary passenger and light-truck rubber rather than a steady diet of run-flats and reinforced sidewalls, and it keeps both the footprint and the price down for the shops that fit that description.
The DST2420 balancer
The DST2420 is a dynamic balancer, which means it corrects in two planes — inboard and outboard — rather than treating the wheel as a single disc. That is the correct behaviour for any modern wheel with meaningful width, because an assembly can be perfectly balanced statically and still shake the steering at speed from a couple across its width. It offers the alloy modes that matter on wheels where a weight cannot be placed on the flange, and it is specified to resolve to a small fraction of an ounce, which is what lets a technician tell a genuinely balanced wheel from one that is merely close.
Wheel weights in the crate
Adhesive steel tape wheel weights come with the package in a black and silver combination, supplied on rolls. Tape weights, rather than clip-ons, are the right default for the alloy wheels this package will spend its life on: a clip-on either will not seat on the flange or ends up somewhere the customer can see, and the balancer's two-plane correction wants a weight that can be placed exactly where the machine says.
Perfect For
Independent tire and general repair shops covering passenger, SUV and light-truck wheels inside the published range. Workshops kitting out a bay who want a changer and a balancer bought and delivered together. Shops with a tight footprint, where a machine that sits against a wall is worth as much as one that is slightly quicker. Operations whose tire mix does not warrant a powered assist tower. If heavy commercial assemblies are routine for you, check the 145 lbs figure with us before this package goes on the shortlist.
What's in the Box
- R980XR swing-arm tire changer
- DST2420 dynamic wheel balancer
- Adhesive steel tape wheel weights on rolls, black and silver combination
Nothing beyond those three items is itemised. Cones, adapters, protection kits and lubricant should be confirmed with us before you count on them.
Certification, in plain words
No independent third-party safety listing is published for either machine here, and given that we have just spent two paragraphs on the reliability of the published figures, it would be strange to go quiet on this one. Powered tire changers and balancers generally sit outside the third-party listing regime that covers vehicle lifts. That is a fact about the category, not a document. If your insurer, a fleet contract or local licensing wants conformity paperwork on powered shop equipment, ask us what the manufacturer supplies for these models before you order.
Shipping
Freight, lower 48 states. Arrange the unload before the delivery is booked: a forklift, or a pallet jack and enough hands on a level surface, or terminal pickup from the carrier if your building has no dock. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee. Inspect the freight while the driver is still there and write any damage onto the delivery paperwork before signing — signing clean is what makes a later claim difficult to win. Warehouse pickup is available at the locations listed further down this page.
Warranty
A single warranty document covers the manufacturer's range. Ask us and we will send you the current version for these two models instead of a paraphrase you would then be relying on. Whatever the term says, open any claim before the machine is taken apart: a unit that has already been stripped for diagnosis is very hard to warrant, and that teardown is the usual reason a sound claim becomes a long argument.
