Ranger Clip-On Steel Wheel Weight Coated - 1.75 Oz - 25 Pcs

The only way a wheel weight really fails is by leaving the wheel. Everything else — a mark on the rim, a spot of rust, a slightly awkward size — is an inconvenience. A weight that departs at speed takes the balance with it, brings the customer back with a vibration that was not there when they left, and does so without leaving any evidence of why. This box is worth reading about from that angle, because retention is the property that decides whether the other properties ever matter.

What is actually holding it on

A clip-on weight has one retention mechanism: a formed steel clip that hooks over the rim flange and holds by spring tension. There is no fastener and no adhesive. That sounds fragile until you consider what the alternative has to survive — an adhesive bond has to resist heat cycling, wash chemicals and the wheel's own flex, and it has to have been applied to a properly prepared surface by someone in a hurry. Spring steel does not care about any of that. It is either seated over the flange or it is not.

Which puts all the weight of the argument on seating. A clip driven fully home carries its load across the whole engaged length of the clip, flat against the rim. A clip half-seated carries the same load on its tip, and that is the one that works loose over a few thousand miles. Wipe the flange first, set the weight where the balancer asked, drive it home with a wheel weight hammer rather than pressing it by hand, and re-spin to confirm. Most weights that come off were never fully on.

The loads it lives with

The demands are not gentle. A weight on a rotating wheel is under continuous outward acceleration that rises sharply with speed, so the clip is being pulled away from the flange harder the faster the vehicle goes — and the fastest driving is exactly when a departure does the most damage to ride quality. On top of that steady pull come impacts: potholes, kerbs, expansion joints, each one a sharp shock straight into the clip. And there is a slower enemy underneath, which is corrosion.

That last one is why the coating on these weights is a retention feature rather than a cosmetic one. Rust does not simply eat the steel away; the corrosion layer takes up more room than the metal it replaces, and on a sprung clip that means it is being levered open from the inside. Tension falls, and the day a pothole arrives with the clip already relaxed is the day the weight goes. A coated weight puts that sequence years further out, and it does not stain the wheel face while it happens.

A useful mid-range correction size

An ounce and three quarters sits in the working middle of the range: enough to resolve the imbalance a typical worn tire and wheel assembly presents, without being so large that the machine immediately asks you to take some of it back. Having the size on the shelf means one weight goes on at the exact angular position called for, rather than two smaller ones spread across a wider arc of the flange — which is both a less accurate correction and twice as many clips that can be knocked loose.

Will it fit your wheels?

The catalogue lists the style as Clip-on / Pfe, which is a clip-profile designation. Profiles are matched to the shape of the rim flange rather than to a vehicle, and this is not a detail to guess at given everything above: a profile that is close but wrong will never sit flush, and a weight that sits proud is permanently loaded and trying to spring off. If your bay sees a wide mix of rims, ask us before ordering a box.

Perfect For

  • High-speed and highway-mileage vehicles, where a departed weight shows up as a complaint rather than as nothing much.
  • Tire shops working through a steady mix of wheels that need a dependable mid-range correction available every day.
  • Winter-road and coastal regions, where salt exposure makes the coating a functional rather than decorative choice.
  • Fleet workshops that measure success in vehicles which do not come back.

What's in the Box

Twenty-five coated clip-on steel weights of a single size, packed at 2.73 lbs. Fitting needs nothing more than a clean rim flange and a wheel weight hammer; there is no primer, pad or applicator involved.

Compliance and certification, stated plainly

Lead content in wheel weights is restricted by national environmental rules and by a number of state programmes, so the material question is a legitimate one to put to any supplier. This listing's own published data does not carry a statement about lead content and claims no independent laboratory certification, and we are not going to add either on its behalf — a claim we invented would be worth nothing to you at the moment you needed it. If you have to evidence compliant sourcing for an audit, a state programme or a fleet contract, ask us for the manufacturer's documentation against this part number before ordering.

Shipping and delivery

A box travels as a small parcel rather than as freight and ships within the lower 48 states. Look at the carton before you sign: crushing or an opened seam belongs on the carrier's paperwork at that moment, because a note taken at delivery is what keeps a later damage claim short. If collecting is easier, the Ranger pick-up locations are listed further down this page.

Warranty

Ranger publishes a written warranty covering its products and that document, not any wording here, is what governs a claim — ask us for the current copy if you want to read the terms first. If clips arrive deformed in transit, contact us before you try to reshape them. A clip that has been bent back cannot be assessed, and reworking it will normally end a claim.
