-Ranger Black Tape Adhesive Steel Wheel Weights
Most stick-on weights are chosen by mass and nothing else. This roll is chosen by colour as well: the steel is powder-coated black, which is the finish that disappears behind the spokes of a gloss-black, satin-black or dark-machined wheel instead of drawing a silver line across it. On a car whose owner paid extra for the wheels, that is not a cosmetic nicety — it is the difference between a balance job the customer never notices and one they ring you about.
Underneath the colour it is a lead-free segmented steel tape weight on a Quick-Peel liner, supplied as a 700-piece roll in a self-dispensing carton. It is a consumable bought by the shop, not by the car, and it is priced and packaged accordingly.
Black, because the wheel is black
The powder coating does two jobs at once. The obvious one is appearance. The less obvious one is chemical: a coated weight does not sit bare steel against a painted or clear-coated wheel face, which is where the staining and the rust bloom start. The published feature list puts it directly — the coated surface helps eliminate corrosion and staining of expensive wheels. Anyone who has peeled an old weight off an alloy and found a rust shadow underneath knows exactly which failure that refers to.
The profile is deliberately slender and low. Two consequences follow. The first is that the weight can be mounted out of sight, behind the spoke face, where it does nothing to the look of the wheel. The second is mechanical: a low-profile weight gives more clearance where a caliper or a brake component sits close to the inner barrel, which is a real constraint on performance brake packages and on a lot of modern trucks.
The carton is a dispenser, not a box
This is the part that is easy to skim past and the part a busy tyre bay actually feels. The carton is self-dispensing: it has a Free-Glide centre hub and a nylon feeder, so the tape pays out smoothly and does not jam or tangle as the roll gets smaller. You tear off what the balancer called for and the rest stays in the box.
The knock-on effect is inventory. A traditional weight rack means stocking, counting and re-ordering a spread of individual sizes, and dedicating shelf space to all of them. A segmented roll replaces that with one part number and one carton on the bench. The published feature list makes the point in the manufacturer’s own terms: it reduces inventory cost by eliminating traditional wheel weight inventories, and it requires less floor space. In a two-bay shop that is a shelf you get back.
Segmented tape: use only what the wheel asks for
The tape is segmented in .25 oz increments. That granularity is the whole argument for stick-on tape over a drawer of fixed weights. When the balancer calls for a correction, you tear the strip at the segment that matches it rather than reaching for the nearest available size and accepting the rounding error. Less mass goes onto the wheel, the correction is closer to what the machine actually asked for, and the residual imbalance is smaller.
The Quick-Peel liner is segmented to match, so the backing comes away cleanly from the length you are using and stays on the length you are not. That sounds trivial until you have tried to peel a liner off a short strip with cold hands in January.
Steel instead of lead
These are steel weights. Lead wheel weights are increasingly unwelcome — restricted in a growing number of jurisdictions and out of policy in a great many shops and fleets on their own account — and the manufacturer states that this product meets national environmental laws and health and safety codes. If your state, your municipality or your customer’s fleet contract has a rule about lead wheel weights, verify the specific requirement against your own obligation rather than assuming a product description covers it; we can point you at the manufacturer documentation if you need something on paper.
There is a service benefit too, quite apart from the regulation. Steel is harder than lead, so the weight holds its shape through handling, storage and installation instead of deforming in the box.
Fitment and placement
The tape measures 1/2" (13 mm) across, which is the width the strip has to fit into on the inner barrel. Check that against the flat landing area on the wheels you work with most — a narrow, heavily contoured barrel is the case where a wide tape will not lie flat, and a tape that does not lie flat is a tape that eventually leaves.
Adhesion is the failure mode for every stick-on weight ever made, so treat the surface as part of the job: the landing area needs to be clean, dry and free of old adhesive and wheel cleaner residue before the weight goes on, and it wants to be at a sensible working temperature rather than freezing. The manufacturer describes the adhesive as extra-sticky, which lessens the chance of a weight coming off the wheel — but no adhesive rescues a dirty barrel.
Perfect For
- Tyre and wheel shops doing volume work, where one dispensing carton on the bench replaces a rack of loose sizes.
- Dealership service departments handling dark factory wheels, where a silver weight on a black rim generates a comeback.
- Custom and performance wheel specialists, where the coating protects the finish and the low profile clears big brakes.
- Mobile tyre fitters, who need one compact carton in the van instead of a full weight tray.
- Fleet and municipal workshops operating under a lead-free purchasing policy.
What you receive
One roll of black tape adhesive steel wheel weights, 700 pieces to the roll, in the self-dispensing carton with its Free-Glide hub and nylon feeder. Each segment is .25 oz. The roll weight is 11 lbs. (5 kg). No hammer, no cleaner, no adhesive promoter and no balancer accessories are listed as included — this is the consumable on its own.

Certification, stated plainly
The data we hold on this product claims compliance with national environmental laws and health and safety codes, and that is the claim we will repeat — it is the manufacturer’s own. What the data does not include is an independent laboratory listing or a third-party approval mark, and we are not going to imply one exists. If a purchasing policy, an insurer or a contract requires documented approval for the consumables you fit, ask us before you order and we will request the paperwork from the manufacturer rather than guess at what it says.
Shipping and delivery
This ships within the contiguous United States, with the cost calculated at checkout from live carrier rates rather than printed here, since those rates change. Collection is available as an alternative — the pickup points for this brand appear in the Pick Up and Delivery section of this page.
If a consignment comes by freight rather than parcel, plan for someone to be there to receive it and for a way to get it off the truck, or arrange to collect from the carrier’s terminal instead. Residential delivery is charged as a separate service and the fee appears at checkout. Check the carton before you sign for it and write any damage on the delivery receipt while the driver is still there; a clean, signed receipt is very difficult to argue with later.
Warranty
Ranger covers its range under a single warranty document rather than an item-by-item term, and we keep the current copy on file. We have not printed a duration in this description because the fact sheet for this product does not state one, and inventing a warranty period would be worse than leaving it out. Ask us and we will send you the document that applies.
If you do have a problem with a roll, keep the carton and the label and contact us before doing anything else. Do not strip, re-work or modify the product to investigate it yourself — a claim opened after the item has been taken apart is the claim most likely to be turned down.
