Ranger Double-End Collets, 2-Piece Set, for RL-8500 Brake Lathes

This is the pair of double-end collets for Ranger's RL-8500 and RL-8500XLT bench brake lathes. Double-end means each of the two pieces carries a working face at either end rather than one, which is how a two-piece set covers the spread of hub bores a lathe meets in normal work instead of needing a drawer full of single-ended cones.

It is a small part with an outsized effect on the quality of the finished job, and that is worth explaining properly, because nothing about a collet looks important until a customer comes back with a pulsing brake pedal.

What a collet actually decides

A bench lathe cuts a rotor that is held on an arbor. The cutting tips are rigid and the arbor spins true, so the machined surface will always be true to the lathe. Whether it is true to the vehicle depends entirely on how the rotor was mounted — and that is the collet's job. Collets and cones centre the rotor on the arbor and clamp it square. Get that right and the machined faces are concentric with the hub bore and perpendicular to the axis, which is what the brake system needs. Get it wrong and the lathe faithfully cuts a perfect surface in the wrong plane.

The consequence of a rotor mounted even slightly off is a shape that has come to be called lateral runout: a machined face that wobbles a fraction as it rotates. The customer does not feel it on collection. They feel it a few thousand miles later, once that wobble has worn thickness variation into the rotor and the pedal begins to pulse under braking. At that point the shop is doing the job twice, and the second one is free.

Grip, and why movement is the enemy

Ranger's published claims for these collets are grip and reduced movement during lathe operation, and those two are really one claim. A cutting tip taking material off cast iron applies a continuous sideways force to the rotor. If the mounting stack can shift under that force — even by an amount you could not see — the tool feeds into a target that is moving away from it and coming back, and the result is chatter: a visible, audible finish defect that leaves a surface pads cannot bed into evenly.

A well-fitted double-end collet resists that force because it contacts the bore over a proper seat rather than a line, and it keeps contacting it as the cut proceeds. A worn, damaged or nearly-right collet is the usual root cause when a lathe that used to produce good work starts producing chatter, and it is almost always cheaper to replace than the diagnostic time spent blaming the lathe.

Fitment, and the thing we cannot tell you from here

These are specified for the RL-8500 and the RL-8500XLT. Using the collets the lathe was designed around matters more than it does on most consumables, because the whole point of the part is dimensional: it is a precision interface between an arbor and a hub bore, and a near-enough substitute reintroduces exactly the runout it exists to eliminate.

What our data does not publish is the bore range these two pieces cover, or the sizes at each end. There is no honest way for us to print a range we do not hold, so if you are buying to solve a specific fitment — an unusual hub bore, a vehicle line that keeps defeating your existing set — contact us with the detail first and we will confirm against Ranger's current parts documentation. That is a two-minute conversation and it beats a returned part.

Perfect for

  • Brake shops running an RL-8500 or RL-8500XLT daily, where collet wear is a maintenance item rather than a surprise.
  • General repair shops that resurface in-house and want the job right the first time.
  • Any lathe that has started to chatter — this is the first thing worth eliminating.
  • Keeping a spare set on the shelf, so a damaged collet never parks the lathe mid-week.

What is in the box

A two-piece set of double-end collets, listed at 7 lbs. (3.1 kgs) shipping weight. Ranger does not publish a further packing list for this item, and we are not going to imply adapters, spacers or a case that the data does not name.

Certification, stated plainly

No independent third-party listing is claimed for this item in the data we hold, and we are not going to imply one. On a tooling accessory that is unremarkable — this is a machined consumable, not a load-bearing safety device — but the principle we apply across the catalogue is the same: if a listing is not claimed in the manufacturer's data, it does not appear on our page, in either direction.

Shipping and delivery

We ship to the contiguous United States, the lower 48, with the method and price worked out live at checkout for your address. A set this size normally travels as a small parcel. Check the packaging on arrival and, in the unlikely event it comes by freight, note any damage on the bill of lading before signing rather than afterwards. Residential delivery is a different service from a commercial dock and carries a residential fee where it applies, and warehouse collection is available at the locations shown further down this page.

Warranty

Ranger's published warranty document for its product line applies. We hold that document rather than a summary of its terms, so no period is stated here — ask us for the current copy if it matters to your purchase. As with any precision tooling, do not machine, grind or otherwise modify a collet to make it fit something it was not made for: the resulting part no longer holds a rotor true, which defeats the entire purpose, and it ends any coverage at the same moment.

Our double-end collets provide incredible stability during brake lathe operations. Never worry about shaking collets causing uneven surfacing jobs.
