-Description
-Quincy 5153D12HCB23M QP MAX: 15 HP, 120 Gallons, 230V Three-Phase
What makes this compressor worth owning for fifteen years rather than five is that its wear parts are consumables. The valves are stainless steel reeds with valve bumpers. The oil filter is a spin-on cartridge. The cylinder and head gaskets are graphite. The oil is circulated by a gerotor positive-displacement pump and its level is visible through a sight glass. Every one of those is a part a technician can replace on your floor, which is the practical difference between a pump that gets rebuilt and a pump that gets replaced. Machines that hide their wear parts inside sealed assemblies do not offer you that choice.
The rest of the specification is straightforward: 15 HP driving a cast-iron two-stage pump at 1,750 RPM, mounted on a 120-gallon horizontal receiver, wired for 230V three-phase power. Quincy quotes 60,000+ hours of pump life for the package.
Reed valves and why they are the part that fails
In a reciprocating compressor the valves open and close on every stroke, thousands of times a minute, in hot air carrying oil mist. They are the highest-cycle components in the machine and they are usually what ends a pump's service life. Stainless steel reeds resist the heat and fatigue that kill cheaper valve materials, and the valve bumpers limit how far each reed can flex, which is what stops a reed snapping at its root. Combined with a fin-and-tube intercooler that keeps interstage temperature down and a mounted air-cooled aftercooler that cools the discharge before it reaches the tank, the valves spend their life in a cooler environment than they otherwise would. Cooler valves last longer. That is the entire design logic of this pump in one sentence.
Filtered oil, not just oil
A gerotor pump is a positive-displacement design: it moves a fixed volume of oil per revolution regardless of how hot or thin the oil has become. That is why it can push lubricant through a spin-on filter in the first place — a filter needs pressure behind it. Filtering the oil takes carbon and metal out of circulation before it reaches a bearing, and the spin-on format means the service is a two-minute job rather than a strip-down. The low-oil shutoff is the backstop: if the level falls far enough to matter, the machine stops itself instead of running a bearing dry.
Will It Fit?
- Floor. 78" long, 28" wide, on a level slab. Add working room at both ends — the drain, the oil fill and the belt guard all need access.
- Overall height. 55".
- Weight. 995 lbs, delivered on a pallet.
- Supply. 230V three-phase. Quincy lists the amp draw for this build at 42 A and publishes no breaker size, instructing buyers to consult a certified electrician instead. Follow that instruction: your conductor length, ambient temperature and local code all bear on the answer.
- Discharge. 1" tank outlet.
The slab, the electrical feed, the disconnect and the connection to your air main are yours to arrange, and the electrical work should be carried out by a licensed electrician to your local code. Nothing on this page is an installation specification.
Pressure and storage
Rated to 175 PSI on a 120-gallon receiver. The high rating is not really about running tools at high pressure — most air tools want far less — it is about storing air at high pressure and regulating it down. Higher storage pressure means more air mass in the same tank, which means longer intervals between pump loads and a steadier supply when several people pull at once. It is the difference between a compressor that hums along in the background and one everybody can hear all day.
Perfect For
- Busy independent workshops on 230V three-phase service.
- Tire shops and fleet bays where impact tools run continuously.
- Paint and body operations that need dry, steady air at the gun.
- Shops that maintain their own equipment and value a pump with replaceable wear parts over a sealed unit.
Not suitable for a single-phase supply. Confirm your building's service before ordering — voltage is the one thing about this machine that cannot be adapted after delivery.
What's in the Box
A fully assembled compressor package: cast-iron two-stage pump with aluminum heads, motor, 120-gallon horizontal tank, magnetic starter, mounted air-cooled aftercooler, high-efficiency fin-and-tube intercooler, spin-on oil filter, stainless steel reed valves and an oil sight glass. No air dryer is included. Shop piping, filters, regulators, the disconnect and the feed are not supplied. Check the crate against the packing list on arrival.

Certification, Honestly
The record we hold lists this unit against the ASME pressure-vessel code for the receiver, and lists CSA among its marks. Those are separate things: a vessel code stamp speaks to the tank's construction and test, not to the assembly as a whole. Some insurers, fleet operators and local authorities are specific about the listing a permanently installed machine has to carry, and a mark that satisfies one of them does not automatically satisfy another. If a particular listing is a condition of your insurance or your local code, verify it against the data plate before you buy.
Before You Order — Please Confirm
- Lubrication method. The package is marketed as fully pressure lubricated, and the feature list says the same. One specification field in our catalogue instead records the oil system as splash lubricated. We cannot resolve that from the data we hold, so we state neither as fact and will get you the factory answer if it affects your decision.
- Electronic tank drain. Two of our records say this unit has an automatic electronic tank drain; a third says it does not. Confirm with us if you need one fitted from the factory rather than added later.
- Air delivery. No CFM figure is published on this page. The value in our data is not attached to a unit of measure we can verify, and a delivery figure is exactly the kind of number that should not be guessed. Ask us and we will quote the factory rating.
Shipping and Delivery
Shipped as freight to addresses in the lower 48 states, with the freight cost quoted live at checkout once we have your ZIP code. This is a 995 lb palletised machine on a freight truck: arrange a forklift or a dock, or choose to collect from the carrier's terminal. Residential addresses attract a residential fee, which appears in the quote at checkout. Before you sign anything, walk around the pallet — tank, feet, guards, gauges, cooler fins — and record any damage on the bill of lading in the driver's presence. Once a clean BOL is signed, a claim becomes very difficult.
Warranty
1-year factory warranty, extending to a 3-year "No Bull" warranty under the conditions Quincy sets out in its warranty handbook. The handbook is the governing document; the extended term is conditional, so read those conditions rather than assuming.
Standing advice on any warranty claim: talk to us before the pump is opened. Disassembly ahead of a claim is the single most reliable way to lose cover on a failure that would otherwise have been paid.
