The component worth reading twice on this machine is the mounted air-cooled aftercooler. A compressor pump discharges air hot, and hot air carries water. Send it straight into the receiver and that moisture condenses later — in the tank, in the drops, in somebody's spray gun. The aftercooler on this QP MAX package cools the discharge before it reaches the tank, so the bulk of the water falls out at the compressor, where a drain can deal with it, rather than travelling down your shop piping to the point of use.

Everything under that is conventional in the way industrial equipment ought to be: a heavy cast-iron two-stage pump with aluminum heads, belt driven, turning at 1,750 RPM behind a 15 HP motor, mounted on a 120-gallon horizontal receiver and wired for 208V three-phase power. Quincy quotes 60,000+ hours of pump life for this package. It is a permanent installation for a building that already has three-phase service, not a plug-in garage compressor.

Why two stages, and why cast iron

A single-stage pump takes ambient air to final pressure in one squeeze. A two-stage pump does it in two, passing the air through a fin-and-tube intercooler in between, so the second stage starts with cooler, denser air that takes less work to compress and dumps less heat into the valves and rings. That is why two-stage machines survive at higher pressures and longer run times. The cast-iron cylinders and aluminum heads are the same argument in metal: iron carries the wear surfaces and damps vibration, aluminum sheds heat from the head.

Will It Fit?

Five things to check against your building before you order.

• Floor space. The unit is 78" long and 28" wide. Allow that plus working clearance on every side — you need to reach the belt guard, the drain and the oil fill without moving the machine.
• Height. 55" tall. Low enough for almost any shop, but leave air above and around the cooler so it can actually do its job.
• Floor loading. 995 lbs on a flat, solid slab. This is not a two-person lift and it is not something to stand on timber.
• Power. 208V three-phase. Quincy lists the amp draw for this build at 48.3 A. No breaker size is published for it, and Quincy's own instruction is to consult a certified electrician — which is the correct answer, because the right breaker depends on your feed, your conductor run and your local code.
• Air connection. A 1" tank outlet, so your shop main can be sized properly instead of being choked at the source.

Pressure, storage and why the tank size matters

The pump is rated to 175 PSI, and the 120-gallon receiver is what turns that rating into usable air. Storage is what stops a compressor short-cycling: the larger the receiver, the longer the pump rests between loads, the cooler it runs, and the longer the valves last. A big tank also means a sudden demand — an impact gun on a seized axle nut, a long blast of blow-off — comes out of stored air instead of dragging the pump straight to load. Shops that undersize storage usually blame the pump for a problem the tank caused.

The oil circuit

The pump carries a spin-on oil filter, a gerotor positive-displacement oil pump, an oil sight glass and a low-oil shutoff. The lubricant is therefore filtered and circulated rather than simply flung around, you can read the level without tools, and the machine stops itself instead of running a dry bearing. The spin-on filter is a consumable you change in minutes, which is what keeps a pump serviceable rather than disposable. There is no air dryer on this unit — if your work needs dried air, that is a separate purchase and a separate connection. Shop piping, filtration, regulators, the disconnect and the electrical feed are not included. The packing list shipped with the machine governs what is actually in the crate.

Our product record for this unit lists the receiver as built to the ASME pressure-vessel code, and lists CSA among its marks. Those marks are not interchangeable, and the only one that matters to you is the one your inspector, insurer or facility policy actually asks for. A pressure-vessel code stamp is a statement about the tank, not a blanket statement about the electrical assembly. If a particular listing is required for a permanently installed machine on your site, confirm it against the unit's data plate before you buy rather than after it is bolted down.

• How the pump is lubricated. The manufacturer's package name and feature list describe this as a fully pressure lubricated compressor; a specification field on this page records the oil system as splash lubricated. Those describe different designs, so both are shown rather than one being chosen for you. If pressure lubrication is the reason you are choosing this model, confirm it with us in writing before ordering — we will get it straight from Quincy's factory spec sheet.
• The automatic tank drain. The product description, the feature list and one specification record all credit this unit with an electronic automatic tank drain; a second specification record lists none. If a fitted automatic drain is a requirement rather than a preference, confirm it with us before ordering.
• Delivered air volume. The published CFM figure for this machine also appears against a different unit of measure, so it is not quoted on this page. Ask us and we will give you Quincy's factory figure in writing before you order.

Shipping and Delivery

This compressor moves as freight within the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout for your address. It weighs the better part of half a ton on a pallet, so you must be able to take it off the truck — a forklift, a loading dock, or terminal pickup at the freight depot. A residential delivery address carries a residential fee, quoted with the freight at checkout. Inspect the pallet before you sign: the belt guard, the gauges and the tank feet, and note any damage on the bill of lading at the time of delivery. A signed clean bill of lading makes a damage claim very hard to win afterwards.

Warranty

This unit carries a 1-year factory warranty, which Quincy extends to a 3-year "No Bull" warranty under the terms in its warranty handbook. The handbook is the governing document, and the extension is conditional — read the conditions before you assume the longer term applies to your installation.

One piece of house advice that costs nothing and saves claims: if something goes wrong, do not disassemble the pump before you contact us. A pump that has been opened up is usually a pump that can no longer be claimed, however well-intentioned the diagnosis was. Call first, let the claim be opened, and take the covers off afterwards.
