MAHLE MCX-2 Multi-Coolant Exchanger with Pressure Test

Most coolant machines do one job: they take the old fluid out and put new fluid in. The MCX-2 does that job in under three minutes, but the reason to choose this model over a plain exchanger is the second job it does — it pressure tests the cooling system. A built-in pressure circuit and gauge let a technician pressurise the system and watch for a drop, which is how a weeping heater core, a seeping water pump or a cracked expansion tank gets found. No separate hand pump, no second tool trolley, no second trip to the bay.

That changes the shape of the job. You can test before the exchange, so you are not filling a leaking system with fresh coolant, and test again afterwards, so the car leaves with a documented result rather than a hope. For a shop that sells cooling system service, being able to say we pressure tested it is the part of the ticket the customer understands.

Two Fresh Tanks: One Machine, Two Chemistries

The MCX-2 carries two new-coolant tanks of 7.5 gal (28 liter) each and a single waste tank of 15 gal (57 liter). Two fresh tanks is not about volume — it is about keeping two different coolant types on the same cart without one contaminating the other. Modern coolant chemistries are not interchangeable, and mixing them is a warranty conversation nobody wants to have. Each tank uses drip-proof, quick-disconnect connectors, both new and waste levels are visible from the front, and a float switch in the waste tank shuts the pump off automatically rather than relying on someone watching it.

Will It Fit Your Shop?

The cart measures 45 in x 38 in x 22.5 in (114 cm x 97 cm x 57 cm) and weighs 121 lb (55 kg) empty, so it moves on one person's effort but wants a parking spot rather than a shelf. Note that the machine gets substantially heavier once both fresh tanks are full — plan its home on a level floor, not on a ramp or a raised bay approach.

Power is the specification most often missed on this unit: it runs on 12 VDC at 15 Amp, not on a standard wall outlet. It also has a stated operating range of 32° to 122°F (0° to 50°C), which matters in an unheated winter bay or an uninsulated southern shop. Confirming the supply and the working temperature of the space it will live in is the buyer's responsibility; ask us before ordering if you are unsure what you have.

How the Exchange Itself Works

A diaphragm fill pump and an impeller drain pump each move 2 gal (7.9 liter) per minute, which is what gets a full exchange done in under three minutes on an average vehicle. The manufacturer rates the result at 92 to 98% exchanged in a single pass. The integrated vacuum generator pulls up to 28 inches of mercury, and that vacuum stage is doing the work that a drain-and-refill cannot: it evacuates air out of the block and heater core so the incoming coolant fills the voids instead of trapping pockets that later show up as a heater blowing cold or a temperature gauge that wanders.

A pressure switch set to 6 to 12 psi (0.4 to 0.8 bar) sits between the machine and the vehicle. Its purpose is protective: it stops the machine from putting more pressure into a cooling system than that system is designed to see. A radiator or an expansion tank damaged by a service tool is an expensive way to learn why that switch is there.

Connections and Coverage

Service hoses are 3/8 in (9.5 mm) with brass quick connect and disconnect couplers, chrome sleeved and silicone sealed. Two sets of universal step adapters cover 1-1/4 in to 1-3/4 in (3.2 cm to 4.4 cm) diameter, and two universal adapter hoses cover 1-1/4 in to 1-3/8 in (3.2 cm to 3.5 cm) and 1-1/2 in to 1-3/4 in (3.8 cm to 4.4 cm). Between them that is most passenger-car and light-truck upper hose sizes without hunting for vehicle-specific fittings.

One point of clarity, because the manufacturer's own spec sheet invites confusion: the specification table names the MCX-2HD in several rows — two 15 gal tanks, additional step adapters, additional adapter hoses. Those figures describe the HD model, not this one. This unit is the MCX-2, with two 7.5 gal fresh tanks and the two adapter sets listed above. If your work is heavy truck, tell us and we will talk about the HD instead of selling you the wrong tank size.

Perfect For

  • Busy independent shops that want a coolant service and a leak test to be one visit to the bay rather than two.
  • Dealership service lanes running two coolant chemistries side by side across a mixed model range.
  • Fleet garages where a documented pressure test before and after a service is part of the maintenance record.
  • Diagnostic-led workshops chasing intermittent overheating complaints, where finding the leak is the job and the exchange is the fix.

What's in the Box

The unit ships with the MCX accessory kit: two universal adapter hoses, four universal step adapters with shut-off valves, one overflow tank wand with a shut-off valve, and miscellaneous fittings and clamps. Coolant is not supplied.

Certification, Honestly

Our data for this machine records no third-party safety listing and no conformity marking, so we are not going to print one. A fluid-service cart is not the regulated category a vehicle lift is, and in most shops nothing turns on it. But if your insurer, your corporate purchasing standard or a local requirement asks for equipment carrying a particular listing or declaration, ask us before you order and we will request the documentation from the manufacturer rather than guess on your behalf.

Shipping and Delivery

This unit ships by freight within the lower 48 states. Freight is quoted live at checkout for your address, so there is no estimate to be corrected later. You need to be able to receive and unload the shipment, or arrange to collect it from the carrier's terminal — the driver is not obliged to bring it inside or to help. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee. Wherever it goes, inspect the shipment before you sign for it and note any damage or shortage on the delivery receipt at the time of delivery; a receipt signed clean makes a later damage claim very hard to win.

Warranty

The manufacturer's stated warranty on this unit is 1 year, parts and labor. If a fault appears inside that period, contact us first and leave the machine as it is — stripping a unit down or attempting a repair before a claim has been opened is the most common reason a good claim gets refused.
