Description
-MAHLE ACX2280 ArcticPRO® R1234yf Refrigerant Handling System
The ACX2280 is MAHLE's fully automatic recovery, recycling, evacuation and charging station for R1234yf — the low-GWP refrigerant now fitted to most new passenger cars and light trucks. The detail that sets it apart from the rest of the ArcticPRO R1234yf line is one you cannot see in a photograph: its refrigerant identifier is non-integrated. Sampling runs through a dedicated third hose and its own coupler, so the refrigerant being tested never travels through the machine's internal plumbing.
That is a purchasing argument rather than a feature bullet. R1234yf is expensive per pound and the vehicles that arrive with it are frequently the ones that have already been "topped up" somewhere else. A contaminated charge that reaches the recovery circuit does not just fail one job — it can put a tank, a filter-drier and a day of bay time out of action. Testing outside the machine means a bad sample is a rejected sample, not a repair bill.
Will It Fit Your Bay?
The ACX2280 is a rolling cart, not an installed fixture, so the questions are floor space, power and ambient temperature rather than ceiling height or concrete.
- Footprint and height. 47" H x 29" W x 29" D (119 cm x 74 cm x 74 cm). Allow clearance in front of the unit for the hinged service door to swing open, and enough aisle behind it to roll the machine clear of a vehicle on jack stands.
- Weight. 215 lb. (98 kg). It rolls on its own casters on a flat, clean shop floor. It is not a machine to bump up a step or wheel across gravel single-handed.
- Power. A standard single-phase 120 VAC - 60 HZ - 12 AMP supply. No dedicated three-phase drop, no transformer.
- Hose reach. The service hoses are 9 ft. (2.75 m), which sets how far the cart has to be parked from the vehicle's service ports.
- Ambient temperature. The stated operating range is 50° - 122°F (10°-50°C). An unheated northern bay in January can sit below that band, and an unconditioned shop can climb above it in August. That is worth checking before delivery rather than after.
Confirming the outlet, the aisle width and the working temperature of the bay is the buyer's responsibility. We can talk any of it through before you order, but we cannot inspect your shop for you.
Automatic Service, Measured Rather Than Estimated
The ACX2280 runs the full cycle without a technician standing over it. Charge performance is stated at +/- 0.5 oz. at 70° to 75°F (+/- 15g at 21° to 24°C) and recovery at 95% at 70° to 75°F (21° to 24°C) within 30 minutes. Those two figures are what an automatic machine is actually bought for: a system charged to the manufacturer's specification cools properly and does not come back, and refrigerant that stays in the machine instead of the atmosphere is refrigerant you already paid for.
Underneath, a 3/8 HP compressor does the recovery work and a 2 CFM dual stage vacuum pump pulls the evacuation. The onboard charging cylinder is a 30 lb. (13.6 kg) DOT vessel, and the spin-on filter-drier is rated for 150 lb. (68kg) of throughput before replacement — a service interval you can plan around rather than discover.
Oil Handling, Which Is Where Most Machines Are Sloppy
The unit weighs recovered oil automatically, so the volume that came out of the system is a measured number rather than a guess made from a sight glass. Replenishment is then matched to what was actually removed. Under-oiling an A/C compressor is a slow failure that shows up as a warranty claim months later; over-oiling degrades cooling performance and is just as hard to diagnose. Automatic weighing turns that judgement call into a reading.
A Connected Machine, Not an Island
Three things here matter to a shop that runs more than one bay. Software updates arrive wirelessly and permanently, so the vehicle coverage tables do not quietly go stale. MAHLE can connect to the unit over WiFi to troubleshoot and give advanced support, which turns a lot of "book a service call" problems into a phone call. And the unit logs and monitors services, so refrigerant use, proactive service reminders and warranty reporting come off the machine as data instead of off a clipboard. Network printing puts a service record in the customer's hand. An optional thermal printer and an optional iOS and Android phone app — which mirrors a service session remotely — extend that further.
Day to day, the driver is a colour 7" capacitive touch screen with an LED status light that is readable from across the workshop, so a technician working two bays over can see whether the cycle has finished. The hinged service door means routine maintenance is done from the front rather than by dragging the machine out and taking a panel off.
Perfect For
- General repair shops now seeing a steady stream of R1234yf vehicles and needing a dedicated machine so the R134a unit is not cross-used.
- Dealerships that need documented, repeatable charge accuracy and a printable service record for every job.
- Fleet and municipal workshops where refrigerant accounting and reporting matter as much as the repair itself.
- High-volume A/C specialists who want the identifier outside the machine because they see the worst of what other people have put into a system.

Standards, Stated Honestly
The specification table for this unit lists the refrigerant-handling and electrical-safety standards it is built to. Read them for what they are: they describe how accurately the machine recovers and charges, and how safely it is constructed. They are not a statement about the vehicles you will connect it to, and they are not a substitute for whatever your own insurer, your fleet policy or your local jurisdiction requires of refrigerant handling equipment and the technicians using it. Refrigerant work is also subject to federal technician-certification rules in the United States that sit entirely outside the machine's own paperwork. If a specific approval or listing is a condition of your operating licence or your insurance, verify that requirement in writing before you buy — from us, and from whoever is imposing it.
Shipping and Delivery
This unit ships by freight to the lower 48 states, and freight is quoted live at checkout for your address rather than baked into the page. Because it moves on a pallet, you need to be able to receive it: either a forklift or enough hands at the delivery point, or you can arrange to collect from the carrier's terminal instead. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, which the checkout will show you before you commit.
Inspect the pallet before you sign. Photograph any crushed corner, torn shrink wrap or scuffed panel and note the damage on the bill of lading in the driver's presence. A signature with no notation is the carrier's evidence that the machine arrived intact, and it makes a concealed-damage claim far harder to win.
Warranty and Support
MAHLE lists a two year standard warranty on this unit, together with nationwide service centres and lifetime phone support coverage. The units are designed to be repaired by the owner rather than returned wholesale, which is a meaningful difference on a machine that lives in a working bay.
One warning that applies to any warranty claim: do not disassemble the unit before the claim is raised. Opening a sealed refrigerant circuit or stripping a suspect component almost always ends the claim, however well-intentioned the diagnosis. Call it in first, get an authorisation, then work to the instruction you are given.
