PSB-AFOFB1388-AK: an open-front booth you can service from the inside

An A-frame open front booth has no doors. Air is drawn in across the whole open face, passes over the work, and leaves through the filtered exhaust chamber and plenum at the back before being discharged upwards through the fan and ducting. Nothing has to be opened, closed or sealed to load a part — you roll it in, spray, and roll it out. For batch work and production finishing that is not a compromise on an enclosed booth, it is the reason to choose one.

The detail worth buying it for is smaller and easier to miss: the light fixtures have inside-access hinged glass doors. Lamps and glass are changed from inside the booth, where you are already standing, rather than by getting behind or above a wall panel. On a booth whose lighting is only two fixtures, a lamp change that is easy is a lamp change that actually happens — and dim, yellowing lamps are how a finishing area quietly stops catching defects.

The fixtures, and what Cls1 / Div 2 means for you

The two LDPI industrial fixtures are UL and ETL listed for Class 1, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D. In plain terms, that is a rating for a location where flammable vapour may be present under abnormal conditions — the whole reason you cannot light a spray area with ordinary shop fittings. It is the specification your inspector will ask about, and it is worth knowing that it is a listing on the fixtures, held by their maker, rather than a listing on the booth as a whole.

Lamps are GE T8 fluorescent, 32W, 5000K, 48" long, four to a fixture with eight supplied. 5000K is near-daylight, which is what allows a colour to be judged where it is sprayed instead of outside in the yard.

Airflow and the fan

Exhaust is a single UL Listed Dayton 24" tube-axial fan with spark-resistant blades on a NEMA-rated, non-spark assembly, driven by a 2HP, 3PH, 230/460VAC, 60HZ motor as standard. Rated airflow is CFM 7,983 at .5 static pressure.

The ".5 static pressure" is the part of that figure that makes it honest. A fan rated with no resistance quoted is a fan measured doing nothing; this one is rated against the resistance of loaded ducting and filters, which is how it will actually run. Premium AFC exhaust filters do the capture, and the included manometer is what tells you when they are loaded — filter changes done by the gauge instead of by the calendar are about the least expensive quality control a paint shop can buy.

Note that the standard motor is three phase. Single-phase electrical configuration is available as an ordered option, along with the PSB-25DUCTKIT-8 duct kit and an LED lighting upgrade. Decide on those before the order goes in.

Will It Fit?

• Inside dimensions: 13'W x 8-6"H x 7'-6"D. This is a booth sized for parts, panels and assemblies rather than for a full-size vehicle — check your largest regular workpiece plus room to walk around it.
• Outside dimensions: 13'-4"W x 8'-10"H x 10'-2"D. That is what your building has to accept, plus clearance for assembly and filter access at the back.
• Above it. The exhaust discharges upwards, so the ducting run and roof penetration have to be planned with the booth, not after it. The optional duct kit is 8' with a 24" diameter.
• In front of it. An open front is only useful if there is room to work in front of the opening. Do not plan the face against a walkway.
• Power. 2HP, 3PH, 230/460VAC, 60HZ standard, 1PH to order. Confirm supply, disconnect and cable run with an electrician before the booth ships.
• Floor and compliance. The booth bolts to your slab and no concrete specification is published in the data we hold, so we are not inventing one — but level matters, because panels that are fighting an uneven floor never bolt up square. Siting, ducting and make-up air are inspected locally: ask your authority having jurisdiction what it wants before you order.

Assembly

Panels are heavy-duty, precision-punched 18 gauge, joined with a 5/16" bolt and serrated lock nut assembly. The serrated lock nut is a small thing that matters on a booth: it resists backing off under the constant low-frequency vibration a tube-axial fan puts into a panel structure, so the booth stays tight instead of needing a re-torque every year. All assembly hardware, the manometer and sealant are included, and panels are powder coated bright white inside and out — white walls are part of the lighting, bouncing light back into the shadowed side of a part.

Specifications

Listings and compliance, kept separate

Three different claims appear in this booth's data and they are not the same thing. The fan is UL Listed — a component listing held by its manufacturer. The light fixtures are UL and ETL listed for Cls1 / Div2 — again, a listing on the fixtures. And the booth is stated to meet or exceed applicable OSHA and NFPA 33 regulations, which is compliance with standards rather than a product listing on the booth.

None of the three is your local permit. Booth installations are approved and inspected locally and the questions are about siting, ducting, make-up air and electrical classification. Get your authority having jurisdiction to put its requirements in writing before you order, and send them to us — they can change which options you need.

Shipping and Delivery

Freight to the lower 48, as pallets of panels plus the fan, fixtures and control gear. Unloading needs a forklift or a dock; the driver will not do it, and panel pallets are awkward as well as heavy. If your site has no equipment, take terminal pickup and collect with your own.

Count and inspect before you sign. A bent panel edge is a panel that will not bolt up square, and it is the most common freight damage on a booth. Photograph everything, check the pallet count against the packing list, and write any damage onto the bill of lading in front of the driver.
