Hofmann MONTY 8100S Center Post Tire Changer

The MONTY 8100S clamps a wheel through its centre, not by its rim. That is the whole design argument, and it has two consequences a buyer can act on. First, the jaws never grip the cosmetic edge of the wheel, which is where nearly all clamping damage on a tire changer occurs — so the risk of marking a customer's alloy drops sharply and it drops for every technician, not just the careful one. Second, a centre clamp is indifferent to rim styling, so the machine accommodates a wider range of wheel sizes than a jaw table of the same capacity.

Hofmann positions this changer as one that works well with minimal technician training, and that is the honest summary: it is a traditional, familiar swing-arm machine wrapped around a clamping method that removes the most expensive mistake a new hire can make.

smartSpeed, by inverter

Rotational speed is maximised by automatic inverter control, varying from 7 RPM to 20 RPM. An inverter drive is what makes that useful rather than merely adjustable — it holds torque at the bottom of the range instead of losing it the way a simple two-speed motor does. So the slow end is genuinely usable on a fighting bead rather than being a setting that stalls, and the fast end is available on the easy tires that make up most of a day's work. The machine picks; the technician does not have to.

The wheel lift is not an option here

An integrated wheel lift is part of the machine, rated to 154 lbs (70 Kg) and operated by foot switch so the technician keeps both hands on the assembly. The platform sits at 1.18" (3 cm) with the roller bead, which is the figure that actually matters: a low platform means the wheel is rolled on rather than lifted over a lip, and the integrated roller board eases the bead-breaking operation from the same low position. Between the lift and the low platform, the heaviest thing the operator handles is guidance, not weight — and the back injuries that come out of a tire bay come from repeatedly lifting assemblies at the wrong height, not from one heroic lift.

Bead breaking and demounting, at the point of use

The bead breaker is side-mounted and hand-activated, triggered by a thumb switch at the point of use. That placement is deliberate: the technician's eyes and hand are at the shovel when it fires, rather than at a pedal several feet away with the contact point in peripheral vision. An integrated bead pusher assists on the upper bead during mounting and demounting, and a tire lifting tool helps through the demount, so the mount/demount head keeps a conventional tire-lever action that any experienced tire technician recognises immediately.

Will It Fit?

Power. 230V, 1Ph, 50/60Hz with a 1 HP installed motor. Single phase, but a dedicated, correctly rated and properly grounded circuit at the machine's position is required and is the customer's responsibility — get it installed by a licensed electrician before the machine is delivered, not after.

Air. Maximum air pressure required is 116 PSI; maximum allowed is 174 PSI. Read those as a pair: your regulated supply must reach the first and must never exceed the second. If your shop line runs above the allowed figure, fit a regulator before the machine, not after the first failure.

Temperature. The published operating range starts at 30°F. If the machine is going into an unheated or partly heated bay in a cold climate, that is a real constraint on winter mornings and worth checking against your own building rather than assuming.

Space and floor. The unit measures 58" x 40" x 76" (L x W x H, 193 cm tall). Add working room in front and to the side for the swing arm and for the technician to walk a wheel in, and confirm your ceiling clears the tower's full height. A sound, level concrete floor is assumed; verifying your slab is the customer's responsibility.

Wheels. Check your largest regular assembly against the capacity table below before ordering — in particular the maximum tire diameter and the mounting head's rim-diameter range.

Perfect For

  • Shops that hire and train — the centre-post design lowers the cost of a technician's learning curve, because the expensive mistake is designed out rather than trained out.
  • General repair shops taking tire work alongside everything else, where the machine is used by whoever is free.
  • Dealerships handling factory alloys on passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs.
  • High-mix independent tire shops that see an unusually wide spread of wheel sizes and styles.

One number we have left in its own units

The installed motor is published as one horsepower alongside a kilowatt figure that does not convert cleanly to it. Motor ratings are commonly quoted as input on one line and output on another, so this is not necessarily an error — but because we cannot tell from the data in front of us which of the two is which, we have printed only the horsepower rating above. If you are sizing a supply circuit, work from the machine's own data plate and your electrician's reading of it, not from a catalogue line.

Certification and compliance, honestly

The product data we hold for the MONTY 8100S records no independent third-party safety listing, and we will not imply one it does not claim. A manufacturer's own declaration of conformity is a different instrument from a listing issued by an accredited third-party body, and where a requirement names the second, the first does not meet it. If your insurer, a franchise standard or your local authority having jurisdiction requires a specific listing for shop equipment, find out which one and let us check this machine's documentation against it before you commit.

Shipping and delivery

Freight equipment, shipped within the lower 48 states. Delivery of Hofmann machines is covered by the Pick Up and Delivery section further down this page and differs from our general freight terms — read it, and if anything there conflicts with what you see at checkout, settle it with us before you order. Whatever the arrangement, inspect the shipment before signing: look for punctures, crushed corners, a load that has shifted on the pallet or broken banding, and note anything you find on the bill of lading at the time of delivery. A clean signature is a statement that the machine arrived undamaged, and reversing it later is difficult.

Warranty

Claims are handled through our published warranty claims process. We have not printed a term because the product data we hold does not state one, and a link to the real policy is worth more than a length we would be guessing at. One standing rule: do not disassemble a suspect component before opening a claim. Photograph the fault in place, record the serial number and contact us first — equipment that has already been taken apart is frequently outside the terms of a claim that would otherwise have been paid.
