Description
-Hofmann MONTY 5800B Heavy-Duty Truck Tire Changer
Hofmann MONTY 5800B Heavy-Duty Truck Tire Changer
The specification that decides whether a truck tire changer is worth owning is its clamping range, and the number that matters even more is what you have to bolt on to reach the ends of it. The MONTY 5800B clamps rims from 14" to 58" without extensions. One chuck, no adapter set to store, lose or fit in the middle of a job, and no operator standing there deciding whether a wheel is worth the fifteen minutes of setup.
For a shop that sees agricultural, earthmoving and commercial truck wheels in the same week, that single line is the whole argument. Everything else on the machine is built to support working at both ends of that range on the same day.
One chuck, both ends of the range
A clamping range that wide is a mechanical problem, not a marketing one. The jaws have to reach a small rim without colliding with each other, and open far enough for a rim more than four times that diameter while still gripping it securely. Machines that cannot do it ship with extension sets — parts that have to be found, fitted, torqued and removed, and which are the first thing to go missing in a busy tire bay.
Two design choices make the single-chuck approach work. First, the chuck lowers to 350 mm, which brings the clamping point down to where a small-diameter rim can be rolled up to it and located without lifting gear. Second, the jaws are long, which is what accommodates rims of high offset — a deep-dish or heavily offset truck rim needs the jaw to reach past the flange rather than grabbing at its edge. The machine also takes rim flanges of up to 40 mm thick, which is the specification that quietly excludes a lot of otherwise capable changers from heavy agricultural work.
Two hands, four functions
The control console carries a switch that operates two functions simultaneously. On a machine of this size that is a productivity feature rather than a convenience one: a large tire being mounted needs the tool and the chuck moving in coordination, and doing it in one motion rather than two alternating ones is both faster and easier on the bead. Chuck speed is selectable between two preset speeds by switch — slow for locating and breaking, faster for the rest — and the mounting tool operates automatically with a preset tool carriage travel, so the tool returns to the same place every time instead of being eyeballed.
Bead breaking on this machine is done at high force, which is what a heavy commercial or agricultural tire that has been on the rim for years actually requires. The figure is stated in the feature list on this page; we have left it out of our own prose because the units it is quoted in are not the units most shops here work in, and we would rather you read the manufacturer's number than our conversion of it.
Will It Fit?
This is a substantial machine and a single-tower assist design. Plan the bay around it.
| Clamping range, inside | 14" |
|---|---|
| Clamping range, outside | 58" (to 1,474 mm) |
| Maximum wheel width | 59" (1,498 mm) |
| Maximum wheel weight | 2,000 kg |
| Chuck lowers to | 350 mm |
| Rim flange thickness | up to 40 mm |
| Machine weight | 3,200 lbs |
| Power supply | 208V / 3 Ph / 60 Hz |
| Style | Heavy-duty, single tower assist |
The power supply is the item to check first. This is a three-phase machine, so a shop on single-phase service needs to solve that before anything else, and the supply and disconnect need to be in place and inspected before installation. You also need floor space for the machine and for a wheel of the size it is rated to handle to be manoeuvred up to it — the machine's own footprint is not the working footprint. Site preparation, the electrical supply and any permit your jurisdiction requires are the customer's responsibility.
Perfect For
- A commercial truck tire shop handling everything from a delivery van rim upward on one machine.
- An agricultural or earthmoving tire service, where large diameters, heavy rims and thick flanges are routine rather than exceptional.
- A fleet workshop that wants tire work kept in-house rather than sublet.
- A mobile or on-site operation's base workshop needing one machine that does not require a decision tree about extensions.
Two figures to confirm with us
- Maximum wheel diameter. The product specification table on this page gives 98.5" (2,502 mm). A separate product field on the same record gives 99". We are not going to quietly pick one. If you are buying this machine for wheels close to its limit, ask us and we will confirm the figure against the manufacturer's sheet before you order.
- Chuck speeds and hydraulic pressure. Both are stated in the specification table on this page in the manufacturer's own units. Ask us if you need them interpreted for your installation rather than working from a conversion.
Certification, honestly
Our product record for the MONTY 5800B does not claim a third-party safety listing, and we are not going to describe it as though it does. A truck tire changer is a machine that stores an enormous amount of energy in a mounted tire, and a number of shops operate under workplace safety rules that require specific listed equipment or a documented safe-operating procedure for tire work. If that is your situation, establish exactly what your rules require and ask us to confirm the position for this model in writing before you order rather than after it is installed.
Shipping and delivery
All Hofmann machines come with free delivery, setup, and instruction, as stated in the Pick Up and Delivery section on this page. On a machine of this weight and complexity that setup visit is worth a great deal — a tire changer commissioned properly is a very different machine from one unpacked and guessed at. Delivery is within the lower 48 states.
What you owe is site readiness: a sound, level floor, the three-phase supply available, room to work around the machine, and clear access for the delivery vehicle. Discuss all of it with us before the delivery is booked. When the shipment arrives, inspect it before you sign and write any damage on the delivery paperwork at the time — a note written then is what makes a freight claim straightforward.
Warranty
Warranty terms are published on our warranty claims page; read the terms rather than a summary of them. If a fault appears, contact us before anyone strips the chuck, the hydraulic system or the tool carriage. Equipment that has already been opened is much harder to claim on, and on a hydraulic machine carrying this kind of clamping force, unauthorised work is a safety question as well as a warranty one.
