Description
-Hofmann MONTY 1270 Swing-Arm Tire Changer
At 381.4 lbs the monty 1270 is the lightest tire changer Hofmann puts in this range, and its swing arm folds aside so the machine can be installed directly against a wall. Put those two facts together and you have the argument for it: this is the changer for the shop that does not have a dedicated tire bay to give it.
It is a swing-arm machine for general repair shops — wheels up to 39" diameter, inner clamping to 22", outer clamping to 20", on a standard 115V single-phase supply.
Designed to give the floor back
Most tire changers are specified as though they will stand in the middle of a bay with clear space on every side. The 1270’s mounting arm swings to the side, which Hofmann lists as a space-saving feature allowing installation directly against a wall. In a two-bay shop that difference is not cosmetic — it is whether the machine takes a parking space out of your working area or lives on the perimeter with everything else.
The 381.4 lbs (173 kg) weight matters for the same reason. It is light enough to be repositioned if the shop layout changes, rather than being a permanent decision made on delivery day.
The mount/demount head does not touch the rim
This is the detail worth understanding before comparing the 1270 with something cheaper. The mount/demount head is manually adjusted for non-rim-contact operation: the operator sets the head so it clears the rim flange rather than riding on it. Plastic protectors on the head guard delicate alloy rims, and a large anti-skid rubber protective pad on the bead breaker head does the same job at the other end of the process.
Rim damage on a tire changer almost always comes from steel touching a painted or polished surface under load. A head that is set not to touch, plus protectors where contact is unavoidable, is how that is designed out on this class of machine.
Bead breaking and build
The bead breaker runs on a double-acting cylinder, which allows precise handling of rims — the cylinder is driven in both directions rather than returning under spring pressure, so the operator has control on the way out as well as the way in. Bead breaking range is 3"-13" (7-34 cm). Around it, Hofmann specifies a strong, rugged design intended for long service life rather than a light-duty machine dressed up for a showroom.
Will it fit your bay?
The cabinet measures 45.3" x 40.6" x 68" (width x depth x height), and the machine weighs 381.4 lbs (173 kg). Remember to plan for the arm’s swing as well as the cabinet, and for clear height above the tower.
Two supplies are needed. Electrically it is 115V, single phase, 50/60 Hz — a standard shop circuit rather than something an electrician has to run. Pneumatically it wants a compressed air supply of 115-175 PSI (8-12 BAR), and that is the specification most likely to catch a small shop out: a compressor that reaches the pressure but cannot hold it through a busy afternoon will make the machine feel slow and the bead breaker feel weak. Check your compressor’s sustained delivery, not just its gauge. Confirming power, air, access and floor space before ordering is the buyer’s responsibility.
Capacity, and a spec-sheet mismatch
The specification table separates two figures that our product fields blur together. It gives a rim width of 3"-12" (7.6-30.5 cm) and a maximum tire width of 13" (33 cm) — two different measurements. One of our own fields, however, reports a maximum wheel width of 13" while another gives a maximum rim width of 12". If your work runs at the wide end, take the table’s distinction as the safer reading and ask us to confirm the exact rim width limit with the manufacturer before you buy.

Perfect For
- General repair shops that change tires as part of a mixed workload rather than as the main business.
- Small premises where the machine has to live against a wall to exist at all.
- Shops on standard 115V power with an existing compressor, avoiding an electrical install.
- Alloy-wheel work, thanks to the non-rim-contact head and the plastic and rubber protectors.
What is in the box
Hofmann lists a tire lever as included, along with the plastic protectors on the mount/demount head and the anti-skid rubber pad on the bead breaker head — those are parts of the machine rather than accessories. Our data does not itemise anything further, so if a particular adapter or accessory is part of your decision, ask us to confirm what ships before you order.
Certification, stated plainly
Our product data records no independent safety listing for this tire changer, and we are not going to suggest one. Where an insurer or a local inspection regime requires shop equipment listed by a third-party testing laboratory, deal with it before purchase: ask us and we will request the manufacturer’s compliance paperwork and send you exactly what we receive.
Delivery and inspection
The machine ships as freight within the contiguous United States. Delivery, set-up and instruction terms for Hofmann equipment are described in the Pick Up and Delivery section further down this page, and they differ from our standard freight arrangements — read them before planning installation.
Inspect the crate before you sign for it. Check the tower, the pedal assembly and the cabinet panels, and record any damage on the bill of lading while the driver is present. A signed clean bill of lading is very hard to reopen.
Warranty
Warranty claims are handled through our warranty claims page. Do not disassemble the machine before the claim is open — photograph the fault, keep the packaging if transit damage is possible, and call us first.
