Ergochair ERGO-JET Height-Adjustable Workstation
The word that matters in the name is workstation. A shop stool holds you up; a creeper gets you under a car. The ERGO-JET does both, because it changes shape: with the backrest up it measures 35.25 in. long and works as a seated station, and with the backrest down it stretches to 47 in. and puts you almost flat. That is one unit doing two jobs on four swivel casters, instead of a stool in one corner and a creeper under the bench.
The other thing that separates it from a stool is that your arms are supported. The armrests adjust horizontally and vertically, spanning 24 in. to 29 in. / 610 mm to 737 mm across, and there are adjustable footrests underneath. Seat height is adjustable 18.75 to 26.75 in. / 476 to 679 mm on an air spring, and the footrests set between 8.5 in. and 11 in. / 216 to 279 mm. The backrest reclines to a maximum of about 60°. Measuring the working height you actually need — the height of the panel, the sill or the bench you will be at all day — before ordering is the customer's job, and it is worth ten minutes with a tape measure. The air spring is the adjustment that gets used
Height adjustment on shop seating fails in a predictable way: it exists, it needs two hands and a spanner, and after the first week nobody touches it. Everyone works at whatever height the seat happened to be left at. An air spring changes that calculation. It adjusts under load, from where you are sitting, in a second — so a technician moving from a wheel arch to a door card actually re-sets the height instead of putting up with the wrong one.
That is why the specification worth reading here is not the top of the range or the bottom of it, but the fact that the whole range is reachable while seated. A range that is inconvenient to use is, functionally, one fixed height.
Wheels that survive a working floor
The casters are TPR, which is a specific choice with specific consequences. TPR is a softer compound than hard nylon, so it cushions the ride over the debris a real shop floor always has, it protects a coated or polished floor rather than tracking lines across it, and it rolls quietly — which matters more than it sounds when the alternative is a hard caster chattering across expansion joints all day.
It also resists chemicals, acids, alcohol and water. That list is not marketing; it is the puddle a shop seat rolls through several times a week. A wheel that swells or crazes after contact with brake cleaner becomes a wheel that drags and then locks. The wheels are wide and large in diameter as well, which is what lets them climb over a cord, a bolt or a floor seam instead of stopping dead and pitching the chair.
Marine-grade vinyl, and why that is the right upholstery
The seat and backrest are thickly padded and covered in heavy-duty non-slip textured marine-grade vinyl. Marine-grade is a meaningful description: that material is specified for boat seating, where it has to cope with sunlight, water, and being sat on by people in wet clothing without splitting at the seams. In a workshop it faces a similar problem with different chemistry — grease, sweat, solvent overspray, and being slid on and off dozens of times a day.
The non-slip texture is the underrated half. A smooth vinyl seat is a seat you slide forward on every time you lean back, which is exactly the movement the backrest and armrests are supposed to eliminate. There is also a tool tray on the unit, so the socket you are using stays with you as you roll rather than staying on the floor where you were.
One specification row worth a question
The manufacturer's table lists Arm Rest Height as approximately 15°. A height is a length and 15° is an angle, so that row most likely describes an arm rest angle rather than a height.
