A longer spindle, and why it removes a step from every wide wheel

The change that defines the E-Evo revision of the HD1400 is not obvious from a photograph: the spindle is 4.7" longer than before. That extra length does one specific thing. It lets the machine clamp wheels without central flanges up to 38" with no extensions fitted at all, and out to 58" when extensions are used.

Anyone who has run a heavy-duty bay knows what that saves. Fitting extensions is not difficult, it is just a step - find them, fit them, do the job, remove them, put them somewhere you will find them next time. Repeat it on every wide wheel in the queue and it becomes a meaningful share of the day, plus the occasional job that waits because the extensions are on the other machine. Corghi's stated reason for the change is that modern tires keep getting wider; the practical result is that the width at which this machine needs help moved a long way up.

Will It Fit?

Three-phase power, a substantial floor and a rigging plan. All the buyer's to confirm before the order goes in, and all cheaper to establish now.

  • Power. Published as 400/230 V, 3 ph, 50/60 Hz. Three-phase supply is required. The hydraulic power unit motor is rated 3 ph, 6.5 hp and the two-speed gear motor 3 ph, 2 hp and 3 hp, so this is not a machine you run off a convenience circuit.
  • Floor and installation. The machine weighs 2,257 lbs empty. Slab condition and anchoring should follow the manufacturer's manual rather than shop practice.
  • Working envelope. It takes tires up to 98" (2,490 mm) in diameter and 58" (1,473 mm) wide. Allow room around that for a wheel to be brought in and manoeuvred, not merely to stand.
  • Access. Measure the delivery route including door heights and turns. A machine of this weight arrives on a truck and needs equipment to come off it.
  • Your responsibility. Building, floor, three-phase supply, unloading and installation.

The clamping range is the specification that matters

Clamp capacity runs from 14" to 56" (1,422 mm), with a minimum wheel central hole of 4.3" (100 mm). Read alongside the spindle change above, that is what determines the range of work this machine will accept without a set-up conversation. Torque delivery is 3,688 ft/lbs at the turntable through a two-speed gear motor, and bead breaking force is published at 6,744 lbs. The wheel lifter cylinder is rated at 5,511 lbs.

The bead breaker disc, and what its shape is for

The tool support carries a bead breaker disc mounted on self-lubricating bushings - a component choice about smoothness and durability rather than performance, and one that shows up two years in rather than on day one.

The disc's profile and its working tilt are the interesting part. Both are designed to get optimal penetration between the rim edge and the tire bead, which is the moment where a bead breaker either works or damages something. The external profile is shaped specifically to avoid damaging or puncturing the tire's sidewall as the disc goes in. On heavy commercial tires that are routinely retreaded, cutting a sidewall does not just cost you a repair, it writes off a casing that had years left in it.

START & STOP: the running cost nobody quotes

The HD1400 carries a START & STOP function that shuts the machine down when it is not being used. It is easy to skip past that in a feature list, so consider what a heavy-duty tire changer actually does in a working day: it runs in bursts, and it idles between them. A hydraulic power unit idling on a three-phase supply through a long shift, five or six days a week, is a running cost that never appears in a quotation and never stops. Removing the idle removes that cost permanently, and it lowers the machine's noise and heat contribution to the bay at the same time.

Semi-automatic, and why that is the right choice for some shops

The machine's hydraulics do the load-carrying work: the heavy-duty carriage translates left and right hydraulically for accurate positioning during mounting and demounting, and an integrated safety lock prevents unintended movement while a technician is working. The control console is laid out so that every hydraulic function is commanded from one place.

What semi-automatic means in practice is that the operator retains control of the sequence while the machine supplies the force. For shops handling a wide variety of wheel types - and heavy-duty work is nothing but variety - that is often more productive than a fully automatic cycle, because an experienced technician can adapt to what is in front of them instead of persuading a fixed cycle to cope with it. It also reduces physical strain on the operator without removing their judgement from the job, which is the balance heavy-duty bays generally want.

Confirm the maximum wheel weight before you order

Published figures for the maximum wheel weight differ by an order of magnitude. The specification table's "Max. Liftable Wheel Weight" row reads 34189 lbs. The Product Features list says Corghi's material developments allowed the maximum wheel weight to be increased up to 4189 lbs.

Both appear on this page exactly as published, each attributed to its source. If the weight of the wheels you handle is what decides this purchase, it is the one figure to settle first - ask us to confirm it against current factory documentation before you commit, and we will get you an answer in writing.

Perfect For

  • Commercial truck and trailer fleets bringing tire work in-house.
  • Agricultural service operations handling tractor and implement wheels alongside road tires.
  • Earth-moving and plant maintenance shops working on wheels that never leave the site.
  • Busy heavy-duty tire centres where the extension-fitting step on wide wheels is costing real time.

What's in the Box

No packing list is published in the data we hold and none is invented here. The documented equipment is the machine itself with its hydraulic power unit, tool support with bead breaker disc, and the wheel lifter cylinder. Extensions are referenced for clamping beyond 38", so if your work regularly runs wider than that, confirm with us whether extensions are included in the standard supply or ordered separately.

Certification, stated honestly

We hold no record of an independent third-party safety listing for this machine, so this page claims none. The distinction is worth knowing before you buy: a manufacturer's own declaration that a machine meets the applicable directives is the maker vouching for itself, and it is not the same document as an outside body testing and listing the equipment. Where an insurer, a fleet contract or a local authority requires a named listing, confirm that requirement with them directly and ask us to establish what the manufacturer can evidence in writing.

Shipping and delivery

The HD1400 E-Evo ships freight to the lower 48 states, with the cost quoted live at checkout for the address you enter. Unloading is yours to arrange or you can take collection from the carrier's terminal instead; freight drivers deliver, they do not unload. A residential delivery carries a residential fee where one applies. Go over the crate before signing and record damage on the bill of lading with the driver present - a clean signature closes the door on a claim, and on equipment at this value that door is worth keeping open.

Warranty

Current warranty conditions sit on our warranty claims page, kept there rather than typed into this description so that what you read is what applies today. One rule holds regardless: raise a claim before any part of the machine is dismantled. A unit taken apart before assessment is the classic way a covered fault stops being covered.
