Full clamping range, smaller machine

The HD1300 is the entry point into Corghi's heavy-duty semi-automatic line, and the thing worth understanding about it is what the smaller price does not take away. The chuck still clamps from 14" out to 56" (1,422 mm) - the same rim range as considerably larger machines in the family. What comes down is the tire envelope around it: 87.6" (2,225 mm) maximum tire diameter and 51" (1,295 mm) maximum width, in a machine weighing 2,205 lbs and running on a 2 hp hydraulic power unit.

That is a specific trade and it suits a specific shop. If the wheels you see are commercial truck, trailer, bus and light agricultural, you are inside that envelope nearly every day and the extra capacity of a bigger machine sits unused while you pay to power it. If genuine earthmover wheels come through, you need the bigger machine and no amount of clamping range compensates. Working out which shop you are is the whole decision, and it takes about five minutes with a tape measure and last month's job sheets.

Will It Fit?

Confirming these against your building before you order is the buyer's job, and it is far cheaper than discovering a gap on delivery day.

• Power. 230 V, 3 ph, 50/60 Hz. Three-phase supply is required. The hydraulic power unit motor is 3 ph, 2 hp, with a two-speed gear motor running up to 2.5 hp - modest for the class, which is part of what makes this machine cheaper to run as well as to buy.
• Floor. 2,205 lbs of machine before a wheel goes near it. Anchor and site it according to the manufacturer's manual.
• Envelope. Tires to 87.6" (2,225 mm) diameter and 51" (1,295 mm) width. Measure the largest wheel you actually service, not the largest you can imagine.
• Access. Plan the route in - door heights, turns, floor surface - and plan on rigging equipment rather than people.
• Yours to arrange. Building, floor, three-phase supply, unloading and installation.

Electrohydraulic, and what that buys you

The hydraulic power unit drives the carriage and turntable movements with controlled motion rather than the on-off character of simpler machines, and the control module sits where the operator needs it. The turntable spindle takes rim diameters from 14 inches to 56 inches.

Torque delivery at the turntable is 3,098 ft/lbs and published bead breaking force is 6,393 lbs. The bead breaker is hydraulic, which is the part that protects your customers' rims: force applied progressively through a hydraulic circuit separates a seated bead without the shock loading that marks a rim edge. The wheel lifter cylinder is rated at 4,850 lbs.

Semi-automatic: the operator keeps the sequence

Semi-automatic is often read as "less than automatic", and in heavy-duty work that reading is usually wrong. The machine supplies the force; the technician keeps control of rotation, clamping and bead breaking and decides the order in which they happen.

Heavy-duty tire work is not repetitive in the way passenger-car work is. Every second wheel is a slightly different problem - a different rim profile, a bead that has been on for six years, an assembly that arrived on a pallet at an angle nobody planned. A fixed automatic cycle is quicker when the work is uniform and slower when somebody has to talk it through an exception. Keeping the sequence in the operator's hands, while the hydraulics take the load, is generally the more productive arrangement in a bay like that - and it is a great deal less tiring than doing both.

Safety in the carriage

The heavy-duty carriage translates left and right hydraulically and carries a safety lock system. The reason that deserves its own paragraph rather than a bullet is that uncommanded movement is the characteristic hazard of this work: a wheel that shifts while a technician has hands on it is how serious injuries happen in tire bays. A lock that engages as part of normal operation - rather than a procedure someone has to remember at the end of a long shift - is a design decision about people.

For rim protection beyond what the method already provides, optional special clamps with plastic inserts are available for alloy rims, extending the machine from steel commercial wheels to wheels where any contact mark becomes a conversation.

Confirm the wheel weight rating before you order

Published figures for the maximum wheel weight differ. The description copy carried on this page states that the HD1300 handles wheel assemblies weighing up to 3,700 lbs (1,678 kg). The specification table's "Max. Liftable Wheel Weight" row reads 3,748 lbs.

The gap is small, which is exactly why it is worth stating plainly: a small discrepancy is the kind a buyer never notices and then relies on. Both figures appear on this page as published, each attributed to its source.
