Description
-Corghi EM9280 Wheel Balancer w/LCD Monitor
Software that uses fewer weights on every wheel
The Corghi EM9280 is an LCD-monitor wheel balancer for passenger cars and light trucks. Most balancers at this level are sold on how fast they spin and how big a screen they carry. The EM9280's genuinely unusual feature is a piece of software: the Weight Management suite, including a program the manufacturer calls Lessweight, which analyses different threshold values according to whether the vehicle is a fast or a slow type and produces a correction that uses significantly less balancing weight.
That is a running-cost argument, and nobody puts it on a spec sheet because it does not fit in a table. A busy bay goes through balancing weights continuously, and a program that shaves mass off each correction reduces a consumable you buy every month for the life of the machine. It also puts less metal on the customer's rim.
Hidden Weight and OPT Flash
Two more programs are worth understanding.
Hidden Weight divides the external adhesive weight into two equivalent weights placed out of sight behind the spokes. On an alloy wheel the customer will look at, that is the difference between a balanced wheel and one that still looks new. It costs nothing per job.
OPT Flash addresses a different problem. Some vibration and road noise is not imbalance at all — it is the tire and the rim out of phase with each other. OPT Flash guides the operator to reposition the tire on the rim so the two cancel rather than compound. Without it, a persistent-vibration complaint gets answered by adding more weight, which does not fix it. This is the tool for the comeback a second balance will not cure.
Setting the wheel up
Wheel dimensions come from the SMART-ARM gauge using the FSP (Fast Smart Positioning) function, which reads rim diameter and distance electronically and selects the balancing program without the operator keying anything in. That removes the commonest cause of a bad balance that is not the machine's fault: a mistyped rim dimension, which the machine cannot detect and will faithfully calculate a wrong answer from.
Width is handled by the AWC (Auto Width Calculation) function, which calculates rim width even when the optional AWD external sensor is not fitted. That is worth reading twice: it is easy to assume from a feature list that non-contact width measurement is included. Here the external sensor is an accessory, and AWC is the software that gets you a width without it. If you want the AWD sensor, tell us and we will quote it with the machine rather than let you find the asterisk after delivery.
Once measured, the automatic positioning system rotates the wheel to the correct angular position for weight application, and an LED spotlight lights the rim interior so the surface can be cleaned and the weight placed accurately. The LCD monitor drives all of it through a deliberately reduced keypad — fewer keys, which on a machine shared by several technicians is a usability decision rather than a cost saving.
Capacity and measuring ranges
Balancer data sheets muddle several similar-sounding ranges, so here they are separated:
- Maximum wheel diameter with the guard — 44" (1117 mm). The new larger guard is what allows this; it is the physical envelope, not a measuring range.
- Maximum wheel width with the guard — 23.6" (600 mm).
- Rim diameter, measured — 10" to 28" (up to 711 mm).
- Rim diameter, setting range — up to 35" (889 mm), for rims outside the measuring range.
- Rim width, setting range — 1.5" to 20" (508 mm).
- Maximum wheel weight (ground fastening) — 165 lbs (75 kg).
Spinning speed runs up to 130 rpm. The shaft is 40mm and the maximum wheel-to-machine distance is 10.82" (275 mm) — check that shaft size against cones, flanges and adaptors you already own before assuming they will carry over from your current balancer.
Will it fit your shop?
We are going to be straight about a gap here: the manufacturer's data we hold for the EM9280 does not include overall machine dimensions. Rather than estimate a footprint from a photograph, we would rather you ask — tell us the space you have and we will get the dimensions confirmed by the manufacturer before you commit.
What we can tell you is that it needs clear floor in front for a 44" wheel to be lifted onto the shaft, plus room for the guard to swing over. A level floor matters more than a thick one: the machine resolves imbalance to a fraction of an ounce, and a unit that rocks gives readings that wander between cycles.
Power is single phase (1ph) at either 115V or 230V, 50/60 Hz. The wide input range is useful in older buildings, but confirm what is actually available at the position the machine will occupy.
Siting, levelling and the electrical supply are the customer's responsibility.
One figure we will not print. The records we hold give the machine's own weight as the same number as its maximum wheel weight. Those are different quantities and unlikely to coincide, so we have left machine weight out rather than repeat a figure we doubt. Ask us if you need it.
Perfect for
- High-volume tire stores where the weight consumable is a real monthly line and Lessweight pays for itself quietly.
- Independent shops that want the Hidden Weight finish on alloy wheels without a top-tier machine's price.
- Shops fighting vibration comebacks — OPT Flash is the specific answer to the complaint that more weight will not fix.
- Bays with several technicians sharing one machine, where the reduced keypad and automatic data entry keep results consistent between operators.
What's in the box
From the manufacturer's current feature list for this model: the machine with its LCD monitor and reduced keypad, the SMART-ARM gauge with FSP wheel dimension detection, the Weight Management program suite including Lessweight, Hidden Weight, OPT Flash, AWC automatic width calculation, the automatic wheel positioning system and the LED spotlight. The AWD external width sensor is explicitly an optional accessory and is not included. Cones, flanges and adaptor kits are not itemised in the data we hold — ask us to confirm what ships in the crate before you order.

Certification and compliance, stated honestly
We do not publish an independent North American safety listing for this balancer, and we will not imply one with loose compliance wording. If an insurer, a corporate policy, a local jurisdiction or a customer contract requires shop equipment to carry a named third-party listing or meet a specific standard, settle that before you order rather than after the machine is installed. Send us the exact wording and we will request documentation from the manufacturer in writing — and tell you honestly if it cannot be produced.
Shipping and delivery
This balancer ships by freight within the contiguous United States, with the freight cost quoted live at checkout for your delivery address rather than estimated in this description.
You need to be able to unload it, or to collect from the carrier's terminal instead. A crated balancer will not be lifted off the truck by the driver, so arrange a forklift of adequate capacity or a terminal pickup. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee.
Inspect the crate before you sign. Look for fork punctures, crushed corners, cut banding and any evidence the load moved in transit; photograph anything doubtful and write it onto the bill of lading while the driver is there. The monitor and the measuring hardware suffer most from a drop, and neither announces it through an intact-looking crate.
Warranty
The EM9280 carries the manufacturer's warranty. We have not printed a term length here rather than let a transcribed number quietly go out of date — the current process is on our warranty claims page, and we will confirm the coverage applying to your order in writing before you buy if you ask.
Do not take the machine apart before making a claim. Opening the measuring head, the monitor assembly or the drive to diagnose a fault yourself is the surest way to have a good claim refused. Contact us with the serial number and a description of the symptom and let us open the claim properly.

Product Features
- LCD Monitor - LCD monitor ideal for displaying high resolution graphics and dedicated software.
- FSP - Wheel dimension detection
- Weight Management - As standard, the Weight Management programme suite which included Lessweight. This software allows a significant reduction of balancing weights, through the analysis of different threshold values, according to the vehicle type: fast or slow (unique on the market).
- Hidden Weight - Keeps rims looking great by dividing the external side balancing adhesive weight into two equivalent weights applied in hidden locations behind the spokes.
- OPT Flash - Minimizes road noise by allowing the operator to alter the position of the tire on the rim in order to optimise quietness.
- AWC (Auto Width Calculation) - Automatic calculation of the width (AWC function) even if the AWD* (*optional accessory) external sensor is not present. The wheel balancer calculates the width by reducing the operational time.
