Champion VRV15F-12: 15 HP of compressor standing on a 42.68-inch square

Floor space in a working shop is the most expensive thing you own, and an air compressor is one of the few machines that will happily pay rent on six feet of wall forever. The VRV15F-12 is the answer to that: the full 15 HP, 120-gallon RV-series package with its receiver stood on end, occupying a base of 42.68".

Nothing else is reduced to buy that footprint. It is the same RV30 pump, the same 1,800 RPM motor, the same 1,017 lbs of machine and the same 175 PSI working pressure as the horizontal version of this model. What changes is which dimension of your building the compressor consumes.

It ships as a packaged simplex unit with a mounted NEMA 1 magnetic starter and tank-mounted start/stop pressure switch control, so the installation job is a connection rather than a build.

Will It Fit?

Upright compressors are bought on their base and then defeated by their height, so work down the list in this order.

• Ceiling first. Our catalogue records an overall height for this unit as a bare number with no unit written next to it, and we are not prepared to publish a clearance figure on that basis. Ask us before you order and we will confirm the height against the factory drawing — on a vertical 120-gallon receiver this is the number that decides whether the machine fits at all.
• Base. 42.68" square, which is the reason to choose this variant. Leave clear air around it anyway: the pump is air-cooled and a tightly boxed compressor runs hot.
• Slab. 1,017 lbs concentrated on a small footprint, tall and top-heavy once uncrated. It wants a flat, level, sound slab — not a patched one, not a timber deck.
• Supply. Listed for 208 / 230 / 460 / 575V three-phase. Which of those you receive is fixed at order time, so agree it with us and your electrician before the unit ships rather than after.
• Air connection. 3/4" tank outlet, sitting high on an upright receiver, which usually shortens and simplifies the first run of pipe.
• Your responsibility. Slab, electrical supply, permits, offload and final placement are all the buyer's to arrange.

What standing the tank up does to your air quality

Compressed air carries water, and where that water sits depends entirely on the shape of the vessel holding it. In an upright receiver condensate gathers in a deep column at the bottom, well below the take-off; in a horizontal one it spreads as a shallow film along the length of the tank, much closer to the outlet. In practice a drained vertical tank tends to hand drier air to the far end of a shop.

The catch is the other side of the same fact. There is no electronic drain valve fitted to this unit, so draining is a manual habit — daily in a humid building, weekly at the very least in a dry one. Skip it and the column rises until the water has nowhere to go but into your air line and your tools. If nobody in your shop will own that job, ask us about a drain before you order rather than after the first rusty air line.

Simplex control, and what it means for duty cycle

The control on this package is a tank-mounted simplex start/stop pressure switch: the machine runs until it reaches pressure, stops, and starts again when pressure drops. It is the right control for a shop whose air demand comes in bursts, and it is deliberately simple — one switch, no sequencing, nothing to reprogramme.

What it asks of you is that the tank be big enough that the motor is not started every ninety seconds. That is precisely the job the 120-gallon receiver does here, and it is why pairing a large tank with a 15 HP motor is a longevity decision as much as a capacity one. Loadless starting supports the same end: the head is vented at start, so the motor never has to break away against pressure.

A note about the air delivery figure

Our catalogue rates this model at 49 CFM, which is the figure in the table. Two things are worth saying about it. The manufacturer's specification list gives lower delivery figures measured at 125 PSIG and at 175 PSIG, and stores both without a unit beside the number, so we can tell you the factory sheet is the more conservative document but we will not reprint its figures as air delivery. Separately, the horizontal version of this same package — same motor, same pump, same weight — is rated one unit higher in our catalogue, which is a difference too small to be an engineering distinction and too consistent to ignore. If your decision turns on air delivery, ask us for the factory data sheet in writing first.

Certification, stated plainly

Two claims are made by this model's own feature list and both are worth having: the receiver is ASME coded, with the list noting that base-mount versions of the package are excluded, and the receiver is compliant with California code. Past those, our data claims no third-party safety listing for the packaged machine, and we will not manufacture one for a product page. If an insurer, a fleet policy or a local inspector requires a specific listing on shop pressure equipment, ask us to confirm in writing what paperwork accompanies this unit before ordering.

Freight only, lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout because carrier pricing moves. 1,017 lbs crated means a forklift or a dock at your end; terminal pickup from the carrier is the straightforward alternative and there is no penalty in choosing it. A residential fee applies to residential addresses. Inspect the shipment before signing — down the receiver for dents, around the pump, motor and starter enclosure for impact — and record anything you find on the delivery paperwork at the time. Damage noted at delivery is a claim; damage noticed on Monday usually is not.
