Champion VRV10-12: 34 CFM standing on a 42.68-inch base

Most shops do not run out of air. They run out of room, and then buy the compressor that fits rather than the one that suits the work. The VRV10-12 is aimed squarely at that: 34 CFM at 175 PSI from a 10 HP motor, with a 120-gallon receiver stood on end so the whole machine occupies a base of 42.68".

You give up nothing else to get it. Same RV30 pump, same 1,800 RPM motor, same 895 lbs, same working pressure and the same packaged simplex build as the horizontal model. The only thing that changes is which dimension of your building the compressor spends.

What an ASME coded receiver is actually telling you

The feature list for this model says the receiver is ASME coded, and adds an exclusion in brackets that is worth reading rather than skipping: base-mount versions of the package are not covered by that statement. Coding a pressure vessel is a design, materials and inspection discipline applied to the tank itself, and on a shop compressor it is the difference between a vessel built to a recognised standard and one built to a drawing. It is also the thing an inspector or an insurer is most likely to ask about first.

The same list states that the receiver is compliant with California code. Whether that is a requirement or an irrelevance depends entirely on where you are installing, but it is a genuine claim about the tank rather than a marketing line, and it travels with the machine.

Loadless starting, and why it is really an electrical feature

Every time a compressor cuts in, its motor has to break away. If the head is still pressurised, it has to do so against that pressure, and it draws its worst inrush current doing it. Loadless starting vents the head so the motor accelerates unloaded and only then takes up work.

On a 10 HP motor in a shop sharing a panel with lifts, lighting and welding equipment, that is not a refinement. It is the difference between a compressor that cycles unnoticed and one that dips the lights and eventually earns itself a bigger breaker and an electrician's invoice. The tank-mounted simplex start/stop pressure switch is the other half of the arrangement — a deliberately simple control with nothing to programme and one thing to adjust.

• Ceiling, before anything else. Our data holds an overall height for this unit as a bare number with no unit recorded next to it, so no clearance figure appears on this page. • Air connection. 3/4" tank outlet, high on the vessel, which usually shortens the first run of pipe.

A note about the air delivery figure

The table gives our catalogue's rating of 34 CFM, and that is the only delivery figure we will put in front of you. The manufacturer's specification list instead carries two values, taken at 125 PSIG and at 175 PSIG, each recorded without a unit beside it, and both a shade under the catalogue number. The factory document is the more cautious of our two sources — but a number whose unit our own data never states is not a number we will republish as air delivery. Ask us for the data sheet in writing if your air budget is tight.

Certification, stated plainly

Everything this page claims about certification comes from the product's own feature list and is repeated above: an ASME coded receiver, base-mount versions excluded, and compliance with California code. No third-party safety listing is claimed for the packaged machine anywhere in the data we hold, and we will not invent one to fill a heading. Shipping and delivery

Freight to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout because carrier pricing moves. 895 lbs crated needs a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack and a level approach; if none of those exist at your end, collect from the carrier's terminal instead. A residential fee applies to residential deliveries. Check the shipment before you sign for it — along the receiver for dents, around the pump, motor and starter enclosure for impact — and note anything at all on the delivery paperwork there and then. Damage recorded at delivery is a claim; damage found the next morning usually is not.
