Champion VR5-8: single-phase power, a stated warranty split, and a control that shuts it down before it destroys itself

Three things separate the VR5-8 from most of what sits near it. It runs on 1 PH single-phase supply at 208-230V, which is the power an ordinary workshop already has rather than the three-phase service a larger machine demands. It carries a low-oil stop control. And unlike almost every compressor listing you will read, its own documentation states the warranty in two parts: a 3-year pump warranty and a 1-year package warranty.

The machine itself is a 5 HP Advantage Series two-stage piston compressor on an 80-gallon vertical receiver, weighing 590 lbs, standing 75" tall on a 35" base, and driven by an 1,800 RPM motor.

The low-oil stop control is the feature to buy this for

Splash-lubricated compressors die of oil starvation more than of anything else, and they do it quietly: the level drops over months, nobody checks the sight glass, and one hot afternoon the pump seizes. This unit has a built-in low-oil stop control that shuts the machine down when the oil level falls below safe, and — the important half — prevents it from restarting until the level has been brought back up.

That second clause is what makes it a protection rather than a warning. A control that merely stops the machine invites somebody to press the button again; one that refuses to restart forces the five-minute job that saves the pump. On a compressor a shop relies on daily and inspects rarely, it is worth more than most of the specification sheet.

Single-phase, and why that decides the whole installation

Every other machine in this class we list expects three-phase service. This one is 1 PH, and that changes the shape of the purchase: no phase converter, no three-phase drop, no waiting on a utility. In a converted building, a rented unit or a shop that grew out of a garage, that difference is frequently larger than the difference in price between two compressors.

Have an electrician confirm the breaker and conductor sizing for a 5 HP single-phase motor before delivery. Single-phase motors of this size draw a substantial starting current, and the circuit that ran a small compressor happily may not be the circuit that runs this one.

What "quick-ship" and "pre-installed accessories" mean here

The Advantage Series is described as arriving fully packaged with pre-installed accessories, on a quick-ship programme — ready to install and operate rather than to be assembled. The pump itself is a heavy-duty two-stage, splash-lubricated design with multi-finned cylinders and head for cooling, intercoolers between the stages and a centrifugal unloader for loadless starting. An electronic auto tank drain, an enclosed belt guard, a NEMA 1 control panel and a start/stop pressure switch control are all part of the package, and the receiver is ASME coded in horizontal or vertical mounting.

Will It Fit?

  • Height. 75", plus clearance above for the safety valve and for servicing.
  • Base. 35". Keep air on all sides — the pump is air-cooled and a tightly boxed compressor runs hot.
  • Weight. 590 lbs. Lighter than the three-phase machines around it, and still not something to walk into place.
  • Supply. 208-230V, 1 PH. Confirm breaker and conductor sizing with an electrician before delivery day.
  • Air connection. 3/4" tank outlet.
  • Your responsibility. Slab, supply, permits, offload and placement are the buyer's to arrange.

Perfect For

  • Shops without three-phase power — the clearest single reason to choose this model.
  • Serious home and hobby workshops that have outgrown a small vertical compressor.
  • One-technician repair shops with intermittent air-tool demand.
  • Anywhere the compressor is relied on daily and inspected rarely, where the low-oil stop control earns its place.

Series figures, and why they are not this machine's figures

The literature for the Advantage Series quotes capacities from 17 to 90.7 CFM depending on model, and notes that dual control is fitted to the 15 and 25 HP models only. Both statements are about the range, not about the VR5-8, and neither should be read as a rating for this unit — a 5 HP compressor does not deliver the top of a range that runs to 25 HP, and dual control is explicitly excluded at this size.

This unit's own air delivery figure is held in our data without a unit written beside it, so it is not printed here. The same is true of its maximum working pressure. Both are ordinary numbers to obtain and we will confirm them from the factory sheet in writing — we would simply rather not publish a rating whose unit our own records never state.

One speed figure worth a phone call

The feature list gives an 1,800 RPM motor, and that is what appears above. A separate speed field holds a much lower number without saying which shaft it describes — on a belt-driven compressor the pump turns considerably slower than the motor, so the two figures may describe different shafts rather than conflict, and neither is labelled. If the running speed matters to you, ask and we will get it confirmed.

Warranty

This is the rare listing that states its terms, so here they are as the documentation gives them: a 3-year pump warranty and a 1-year package warranty. Read the split rather than the headline — the long cover is on the pump, the component most likely to need it, and the shorter cover is on everything bolted around it. Terms do change, so confirm the current position with us in writing before you order, and see the store's warranty claims page for how a claim is made. One rule protects any of it: if something goes wrong, call us before you take anything apart. A pump opened before the claim is raised is very often a claim that no longer exists.

Certification, stated plainly

The claim this model's own documentation makes is an ASME coded receiver, in horizontal or vertical mounting. Beyond that, no third-party safety listing is claimed for the packaged machine in the data we hold, so none is claimed here. If an insurer, a fleet policy or a local inspector requires a specific listing on shop pressure equipment, ask us to confirm in writing what accompanies this unit before you order.

Shipping and delivery

Freight to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout because carrier rates move. 590 lbs crated still needs a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack and a level approach at your end; if you have none of those, arrange collection from the carrier's terminal instead. Residential addresses carry a residential fee. Inspect the machine before you sign for it — receiver, pump, motor and control panel — and note any damage on the delivery paperwork at the moment you find it. A signed clean receipt is very hard to argue with later.
