Champion LV04PURVS-8 5 HP Rotary Vane Air Compressor, 80 Gallon Vertical

Two things define this model. The tank stands upright, which brings the footprint down to about 36 inches on its long side, and the airend is protected by high temperature safety shutdown. Put those together and you have a compressor designed to be installed out of the way and left to get on with it, which is exactly how most small shops actually use one.

The specification is a Champion rotary vane airend in cast iron, direct driven by a TEFC motor at 1760 RPM, rated 5 HP with 20 CFM of delivery and a working pressure of 100 PSI, on an 80 gallon vertical receiver, with oil carryover of 3 ppm.

A thermal cut-out is the difference between a service and a rebuild

Vane compressors seal on a film of oil between the vane tips and the housing bore. Take the oil away, or let the machine get hot enough that the film breaks down, and the wear is immediate and expensive. The failure modes that lead there are mundane: a blocked cooling path, a corner with no ventilation, a low oil level nobody checked, an unusually hot week.

The high temperature shutdown stops the machine before any of those turn into damage. That protection is worth more on an unattended installation than on one that lives next to a bench, because a compressor tucked in a plant room or a closet has nobody standing beside it to notice that it smells wrong. If you are siting this out of sight, that feature is the one doing the work.

Standing the tank up

Turning an 80 gallon receiver on end trades floor area for height. The machine ends up occupying a compact rectangle around 36 inches on the long side, which is the difference between a compressor in the corner and a compressor down the middle of a wall you needed for something else.

A vertical tank also drains better. Condensate falls to the bottom of the shell, and in a vertical tank that bottom is a small area directly beneath the whole column of air with the drain sitting at the lowest point of it. Water goes where you can get it out, rather than lying along the length of a horizontal cylinder.

The trade is headroom, and you must measure for it. Allow not just the height of the machine but working room above and around it for the airend, the motor and the starter panel. Our record for this unit does not hold the overall height in a form we are willing to publish, so we have not printed a number. Ask us and we will read it from the factory drawing, which is the right way to plan a vertical install.

Direct drive, continuous delivery, no belts

The rotor turns in a cast iron housing with the vanes riding out against the bore, so air arrives continuously instead of in pulses. Nothing reciprocates, so nothing hammers into the floor and downstream equipment sees a steady supply rather than a series of shocks. The motor drives the airend directly, which deletes belt tensioning, belt alignment and belt replacement from the maintenance schedule outright.

Running slowly, at 1760 RPM, is the last piece. Slow machines are quiet machines and they wear slowly. Combined with the 3 ppm oil carryover, measured with the CS300 vane diester lubricant the airend arrives filled with, this is a compressor you can put near people and near work that oil would spoil.

Will it fit, and what does it need?

Plan for roughly 36 inches on the long side of the footprint and about 570 lbs of weight, concentrated over a small area. The floor must be solid and properly level, because a tall, narrow, heavy object on an uneven slab is a stability problem before it is a wear problem. Keep clear air around the motor and the airend, and keep the tank drain accessible.

The receiver has a 1/2 inch outlet, so size the shop main and any adaptor for that. There is no integrated air dryer and no electronic drain valve fitted, so plan those separately if you need genuinely dry air at the tool.

Settle the electrical supply before you order. The description offers 208-230/460 Volt 3 phase and the phase field on our record agrees, but the wider LV series data also carries a single phase listing. Ask us to confirm phase and voltage against the exact build you are ordering, and have your electrician confirm the building's supply. This is the one detail that turns a delivery into a return.

Overall width is recorded in our data without a unit and is therefore not printed. Ask if it matters to the install.

Perfect for

  • Plant rooms, closets and corners, where the machine is installed out of sight and expected to look after itself.
  • Small shops short of floor area but with ceiling height available.
  • Finishing, packaging and light production work that a low oil carryover figure protects.
  • Premises where noise matters, thanks to slow direct drive and pulse-free delivery.

Certification, stated plainly

Our product record carries no third-party safety listing for this compressor and no pressure vessel stamp for its receiver. That is a description of our data, not a judgement on the machine, and we would rather tell you that than let an unverified badge sit on the page. If an insurer, a local inspector or a workplace safety audit requires a particular listing or stamp, name it and we will check it against the factory documentation before your order goes in.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, within the contiguous United States. At roughly 570 lbs on a pallet this goes on a freight truck, not a parcel van, and the freight cost is calculated live at checkout for the address you enter rather than averaged.

The customer unloads. Have a forklift rated above the shipping weight ready, or take terminal pickup and collect it with your own equipment, and treat a tall crate with extra care coming off the deck. A residential delivery address carries a residential fee, which the checkout quote will show you before payment. Inspect the pallet before you sign for it: a leaning crate, bent tank feet, a cracked fan cover, torn wrap or fluid on the trailer floor all go on the bill of lading in writing, with photographs. A clean signature settles the question in the carrier's favour.

Warranty and support

Warranty terms and how to open a claim are set out on our warranty claims page. Do not take the airend, motor or panel apart before the claim exists. A component that has already been opened is the most frequent reason a genuine claim is declined, so report the fault, get it documented and wait for instruction.
