Champion HRV10-12: the mid-size shop compressor, lying down

Between the compressor that cannot keep up and the one that costs more to install than to buy, there is a size most working shops actually need. The HRV10-12 sits there: 34 CFM at 175 PSI, produced by a 10 HP motor turning at 1,800 RPM, stored in a 120-gallon receiver that lies horizontally along a 71" run.

Horizontal is the point of this variant. Standing the same volume of tank upright buys back floor but costs headroom, and plenty of buildings — basements, workshops under a mezzanine, bays with a low roll-up door track — cannot pay in headroom at any price. This is the version of the RV package for those rooms.

It arrives as a packaged simplex unit with the magnetic NEMA 1 starter already mounted, so what you are scheduling is an electrical connection, not an assembly job.

Is 34 CFM the right size for you?

The honest way to size a compressor is to count the tools that genuinely run at the same time, not the tools you own. Two technicians with impact tools and a blow gun are intermittent draws; a sander, a die grinder or a cut-off tool run continuously and are what actually empties a tank. 34 CFM comfortably covers a two-to-three bay service shop with mixed work, and it starts to feel tight the moment two continuous-draw tools run all day alongside everything else.

The 120-gallon receiver is what makes that number liveable. Reserve does not make air, but it flattens the peaks so the pump cycles less often and the pressure at the far end of the shop holds steadier when several people reach for a tool at once. A big tank on a moderate motor is a deliberate design, not a compromise.

Where you put it, and how loud it is there

Reciprocating compressors are not quiet, and the two features that address it are easy to skim past. An intake filter and silencer handles the induction noise — the hard, rhythmic bark a compressor makes drawing air — and an enclosed belt guard covers the drive. Neither turns it into a background appliance, but together they change what it sounds like through a wall.

Siting matters more than either. A horizontal unit like this sits low and stable, which makes it easier to put along a back wall or behind a partition than a tall upright of the same volume. Keep air on all sides regardless: the pump is air-cooled, and a compressor tucked into a tight nook runs hotter, which shortens oil life before it shortens anything else.

A note about the air delivery figure

The 34 CFM above is our catalogue's rating and it is the only delivery figure on this page. The manufacturer's own specification list gives two delivery values instead, one measured at 125 PSIG and one at 175 PSIG, and both are stored without a unit written next to the number. Both are slightly below the catalogue figure. We can tell you the factory document is the more conservative of the two sources; we are not going to reprint numbers whose unit our own data never states. If your tool load sits near the limit, ask us for the factory data sheet in writing before you commit — that gap is exactly where a shop discovers it is short of air.

Certification, stated plainly

This model's feature list makes two claims and both are useful: the receiver is ASME coded, with base-mount versions of the package specifically excluded from that, and the receiver meets California code. Nothing in our data claims a third-party safety listing for the packaged machine, so nothing of the sort is claimed here. Some insurers, fleet operations and local inspectors do require a particular listing on shop pressure equipment; if that is your situation, ask us to confirm in writing what documentation ships with this unit before you place the order.

This ships by freight to the lower 48 states, priced live at checkout because carrier rates change. You will need a way to get 895 lbs off a truck — forklift, dock, or a pallet jack with a level approach — or you can have it held for pickup at the carrier's terminal, which many buyers prefer for a machine this size. Residential addresses attract a residential fee. Inspect it before you sign: run your eye along the receiver for dents, check the pump, motor and starter for impact, and write anything you find on the delivery paperwork while the driver is still on site.
