Why a two-hand control is worth understanding

Nearly every incident involving a bridge jack follows the same shape. The pad is not quite under the jacking point. Rather than lower the jack and reposition it, somebody reaches in to nudge the pad with one hand while operating the control with the other. The load moves, the hand is where the load is, and the outcome is entirely predictable.

A control that physically requires both hands makes that sequence impossible. It is not a warning label or a training point - it is the mechanism refusing to cooperate with the shortcut. In a bay with apprentices, temporary staff or a genuine rush on, that distinction matters far more than any published specification, and it costs you nothing except the discipline of positioning the jack properly the first time.

Air over hydraulics: no handle, no pumping

Compressed air does the pumping and hydraulics do the lifting, so there is no jack handle to swing in a space that has no room for one. Practically, this means the jack needs a live air line at the lift. Most workshops already have one within reach; if yours does not, that is a simple job to schedule before delivery rather than improvise afterwards.

The other consequence is speed. An air-over-hydraulic unit lifts at a consistent rate whatever the operator's arms are doing, which is why it makes sense on a lift being used repeatedly rather than occasionally.

Low profile is a usage feature, not a styling one

The jack has adjustable heights and a deliberately low build, and the benefit shows up when it is idle rather than when it is working. A tall accessory sitting on the rails interferes with drive-on, collects knocks from tyres, and slowly persuades whoever runs the bay to take it off the lift. Once it is off the lift, it stops being used at all. Something that stows below the working envelope stays fitted, and a jack that is fitted is a jack that earns its cost back.

What it lets a four-post lift do

A four-post lift supports a vehicle on its tyres, which is the right answer for storage, for inspection and for anything reached from underneath - and completely wrong the moment a wheel needs to come off. The RJ9A is what closes that gap. Rolled along the lift's accessory rails to the axle in question, it takes the vehicle's weight from proper pick-up points using the supplied adapters and lifts the wheels clear of the runway.

Fit two and the arithmetic changes again: with a jack at each axle the whole vehicle can be freed at once, so a four-wheel brake job or a full set of tyres is one operation instead of two, with no lowering and re-lifting in between. One jack is a reasonable starting point and covers single-axle work; just choose it knowingly rather than finding out mid-job.

Examine the shipment before signing. Look over the cylinder, frame and controls for impact damage, confirm the adapters are present, and note anything doubtful on the bill of lading while the driver is there to see it. A clean signature ends the carrier's liability.
