Description
-BelAire QP318VLE: a 7.5-HP piston compressor you can stand next to
Piston compressors are loud. That is not a defect, it is physics — a reciprocating pump makes noise, and in most shops the machine ends up exiled to a closet, an outbuilding or a corner nobody works in. Shops that wanted quiet air have historically had to buy a rotary screw and pay for it.
The QP318VLE is BelAire's answer to that: a conventional two-stage cast iron piston pump wrapped in a sound enclosure, rated at 69 dBA. The manufacturer's own comparison is that it produces less than half the noise of a standard piston compressor. It is a 7.5-HP machine on 208-230V 1-Phase power, feeding an 80-Gallon vertical ASME tank at up to 175 PSI.
What the enclosure is actually made of, and what it costs you
The shroud is high-strength ABS with a high-flow fan behind it, and that combination is doing two jobs at once. The panels absorb and block the pump's noise. The fan then has to move enough air through a closed box to keep the pump cooler than it would be sitting in the open — which is why BelAire describe the enclosed machine as running cooler and quieter rather than trading one for the other.
There is a real obligation attached, and it is worth stating plainly. An enclosed compressor depends entirely on that forced airflow. Do not stack boxes against the intake or exhaust grilles, do not site it in a cupboard with no ventilation, and do not run it with panels removed on the theory that more open air is better — the fan and the ducting are designed as a system. Leave the clearance the manual specifies on all sides.
Will It Fit?
- Footprint. 38.2" long by 24.3" wide, standing 80" tall. The compact plan area is deliberate — this machine is designed to go where space is tight, which is exactly where noise is least tolerable.
- Ceiling. At 80" tall it needs genuine headroom, plus space above to lift panels for service. Measure before you commit.
- Power. 208-230V, 1-Phase. A magnetic starter is included with the machine rather than sold separately, so the motor's thermal overload protection arrives with it.
- Circuit size. BelAire do not publish an amp draw or a recommended breaker for this model — their specification says to consult a certified electrician, and so do we. Do not size a circuit for a 7.5-HP motor from a figure found on a forum.
- Weight. 608 lbs. Vertical, so plan how it is moved upright through your doorway rather than how it is carried.
The site, the ventilation, the electrical supply and any permits are the customer's responsibility. Ask us and we will confirm any published figure against the factory documentation before you order.
Two stages, cast iron, and low-oil protection
The pump is two-stage with a cast iron cylinder. Two-stage means the air is compressed once, cooled, then compressed again — which is how the machine reaches 175 PSI without the pump running hot, and it is the standard arrangement for compressors expected to work rather than to top up a tyre. An integrated aftercooler sits downstream and drops the discharge temperature, condensing moisture out before it can travel down your air line.
Cast iron is chosen for the same reason it always is: it holds its bore geometry under sustained heat where lighter materials distort, and a distorted bore is a pump that burns oil.
Two protection devices are specified and both matter more on an enclosed machine than on an open one, because you cannot see or hear trouble developing behind the panels. Low oil level protection stops the machine before a starved pump destroys itself. High temperature shutdown does the same if cooling is compromised — which, on a machine that depends on forced airflow, is the failure you most want caught automatically.
Perfect For
- Shops where people work near the compressor. Service bays, small production areas, anywhere a conversation has to happen.
- Buildings with neighbours. Shared units, mixed-use premises, anywhere a noise complaint is a business risk.
- Tight floor plans. A 38.2" by 24.3" footprint on a vertical tank.
- Single-phase premises. This is the 1-Phase build; a three-phase version exists if your service is three-phase.
- Dealership and showroom-adjacent workshops. Where customers can hear the shop.
What's in the Box

Confirm the air delivery figure before you order. A delivered air volume is deliberately not printed on this page — the published figures for it are not consistent with each other, and an air-delivery number is only worth quoting if it is exact. If air delivery is the number your decision turns on, ask us in writing and we will get it confirmed from BelAire before you order.
Certification, stated honestly
What the data for this compressor states is an ASME certified tank and ASME safety valves. That covers the pressure vessel and the relief devices — the parts that hold and release 175 PSI, and the parts an inspector usually asks about first.
What the data does not state is any nationally recognised testing laboratory listing for the complete electrical assembly. That is a separate approval, issued by an independent body, and it is not implied by the tank rating. Some insurers, some workplace safety regimes and some local electrical inspectors require one for equipment in a commercial building. If that describes your situation, confirm the requirement before you buy — it is far cheaper to settle at the quote stage than at final inspection.
Shipping and delivery
Freight only, within the lower 48 states, priced live at checkout for the address you enter rather than from a fixed table. You must be able to take it off the truck: a forklift, a loading dock, or terminal pickup arranged with the carrier. Delivery to a residential address carries an additional fee, shown at checkout. Inspect the crate before you sign for it and write any damage on the bill of lading while the driver is present — a clean signature makes a later claim very difficult.
Warranty
A 2 Year consumer warranty is recorded for this compressor; the current warranty document is linked on this page and is the version that governs. Whatever the terms, protect the claim the same way: if the pump, motor or a control fails, photograph it in place, leave the assembly together and contact us before anything is taken apart. Disassembly ahead of assessment is the most common reason a good claim fails.
