BelAire 6312H Iron Series: automotive-style bearings in a 10 HP two-stage pump

Most compressors in this class use plain bushings on the connecting rods. The Iron Series 6312H uses automotive-style rod bearings and wrist pins — the same idea as the bottom end of an engine — in a solid cast-iron two-stage pump. That is a durability decision, not a marketing one: bearings of that type spread the load, run with less friction and tolerate the hours a shop compressor actually accumulates. It is the detail worth knowing about this machine before any of the headline numbers.

Around that pump sits a 10 HP three-phase motor on a horizontal ASME tank, an enclosed high-flow belt guard, and start/stop pressure switch control. It is aimed squarely at shops that have outgrown a small single-stage machine and are tired of hearing the motor cycle.

Airflow: what it will actually run

The pump delivers 35 CFM at 100 PSI and 32 CFM at 175 PSI, which is the number that matters when you are sizing tools. Two air sanders will hold a shop hostage on a small compressor; this is the tier where two or three people can work at once without watching the gauge. The two-stage design is what makes 175 PSI a working pressure rather than a peak: air is compressed, cooled between stages, then compressed again, so the pump reaches high pressure without the heat a single-stage machine generates doing the same job.

An aftercooler is fitted, and it earns its place. Cooler discharge air means more of the water drops out at the tank instead of travelling down the pipe to your tools and your paint. BelAire recommends the CPXHT50 dryer alongside this unit for anything moisture-sensitive; it is not included.

Will it fit, and will it run?

This is the horizontal version, so it is long and low rather than tall. The listed dimensions are 73 in. long, 24 in. wide and 49 in. high, at a listed weight of 830 lb. That height suits a shop with a low ceiling, a mezzanine or a machine that has to live under something; the length is what you need to plan for. Leave working room at the pump end for oil checks and belt access, and remember that 830 lb on a pallet has to reach its final position somehow.

Power: this is a 3-Phase machine, and it is dual-voltage — it wires into either a 208V or a 230V three-phase system, which is genuinely useful because you do not have to know which one your building has before you order. A magnetic starter is fitted. BelAire's data sheet does not publish an amp draw or a breaker size for this model and tells you to consult a certified electrician; we are repeating that instruction rather than inventing a number. Service, conductors, disconnect and any permit are the customer's responsibility, and a licensed electrician should confirm all of it before delivery day.

One thing to check with us in writing before you order: the voltage field in this product's spec record reads 460V, while the product title, the description and the feature list all describe a 208-230V three-phase machine. The 460V variant of this pump is sold as a separate model. Confirm which one you are buying, because a compressor wired for the wrong service is not a return you want to make on 830 lb of freight.

Built to be maintained

The fully enclosed high-flow belt guard protects the belts and the operator without choking airflow to the flywheel, which is the compromise cheap guards get wrong. The tank drain is manual — you open a valve, the water comes out — and that is worth doing on a schedule, because water sitting in the bottom of a tank is what eventually ends a tank's life. An oil sight glass makes the level check a two-second job. The pump is belt-driven and splash lubricated, so servicing it is ordinary mechanical work rather than a specialist visit.

Perfect for

  • Multi-bay automotive shops where two or three techs are on air at the same time.
  • Fleet and truck maintenance, where impact tools of a serious size are the daily reality.
  • Fabrication and welding shops running plasma, grinders and blast equipment that eat continuous airflow.
  • Low-ceiling buildings — the horizontal layout keeps everything under 49 in.

What is included

The unit arrives factory-assembled: cast-iron two-stage pump, 10 HP three-phase motor with magnetic starter, horizontal ASME tank with safety valve and manual drain, pressure gauge, start/stop pressure switch, aftercooler and the enclosed belt guard. An air dryer is not included, and neither is the recommended CPXHT50.

Confirm the tank size before you order

Product title and spec record 120 gallon horizontal ASME tank
Manufacturer feature line on this listing ASME tank and safety valve, described as an 80 gallon air reserve
What we recommend Ask us to confirm the tank size in writing before you order

Published figures for the tank differ, as set out above: the product title and spec record give a 120 gallon horizontal ASME tank, while the manufacturer feature line on this listing describes an 80 gallon air reserve — wording that appears word for word on BelAire's smaller models. Tank capacity is the thing you are buying at this price, so confirm the tank size with us in writing before you order and we will get it straight from BelAire.

Certification, stated plainly

The tank and safety valve on this compressor are ASME rated. That is a pressure-vessel standard and it is the right one for the part of the machine that holds air under pressure. It is not an electrical listing, and BelAire's published data for this model does not claim a third-party North American electrical safety listing. The two are easily assumed to be the same thing, so it is worth stating. If your insurer, your safety officer or your local inspector requires that kind of listing on shop equipment, ask us what documentation ships with the unit and get the answer before you buy.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, to the lower 48 states, on a pallet. At 830 lb this is not a two-person lift: plan for a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack with a flat, hard approach from the truck to the door. If you have none of those, take terminal pickup instead and bring a trailer — we will help you set it up. A delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, quoted with your shipping at checkout.

Check the freight before you sign for it. Look at the belt guard, the gauge, the motor housing and the tank welds, and note anything you find on the delivery receipt while the driver is still there. Signing a clear receipt and finding the damage afterwards turns a straightforward claim into an argument you will probably lose.

Warranty

This model is listed with a 2 Year factory warranty, consumer and commercial, bumper to bumper with no extra purchase needed. The warranty document that ships with the unit is the version that governs, so read it when the machine arrives rather than when something goes wrong. And do not take the pump, motor or electrical enclosure apart before a claim is opened — disassembly before inspection is the most common reason an otherwise valid warranty claim gets refused.
