Description

Atlas Platinum PTC500 + PWB90XL: a wheel service cell that runs on ordinary 110 volt outlets

Almost every tire changer that develops real bead-breaking force asks for a dedicated high-voltage circuit and, often, an electrician's visit before it can be switched on. Both machines in this package run on 110volt. The PTC500 centre-post changer breaks beads with 6,924 lbs of force and the PWB90XL spin balancer sits beside it, and between them they need shop air and a pair of ordinary outlets.

For a shop fitting out a bay, a mobile operation, or anyone whose panel is already full, that single line changes the cost of ownership before the machines are even uncrated. It is the reason to look at this pairing rather than the heavier truck equipment further up the range.

Will It Fit?

  • Power. Both machines are 110volt. No three-phase supply, no dedicated high-current circuit, no electrical work before the machines can be switched on.
  • Air, and read this one carefully. The PTC500 needs 120-145 PSI. That is at the upper end of what a small shop compressor delivers, and a compressor that tops out below it will run the machine badly rather than not at all — which is worse, because it looks like a fault. Check the compressor's actual regulated output, not its badge, before you order. An oiler, filter and regulator are supplied with the changer; the air supply itself is not.
  • Floor. Atlas publishes no concrete thickness or PSI rating for either machine, so we do not state one. A centre-post changer anchors to the slab; if your floor is thin, cracked or a coated topping, ask your installer before delivery day.
  • Bay space. A centre-post changer with dual assist arms and a wheel lift needs clear floor all the way around it. Measure the swing, not the footprint.
  • Unloading. The changer crates at 885 lbs and the balancer at 290 lbs, 1,175 lbs total across the package.

Confirming the outlets, the compressor's real output and the unloading plan is the buyer's responsibility, and the compressor is the one people get wrong.

The no-lever changing system, and why it exists

The PTC500 is a centre-post machine with dual assist arms and a wheel lift, running what Atlas calls a "lever/no-lever" changing system. The point of all that hardware is a single failure mode: the mount bar. A traditional changer levers the bead over the rim edge, and on a low-profile tire wrapped around an expensive painted or polished alloy that lever is exactly what marks the wheel. The assist arms do that work instead, holding and rolling the bead so the tool does not have to be forced.

The "Smart Lock" centre-post mounting system is the other half of it. The wheel is secured through the centre rather than clamped at the rim edge, so the clamping force never touches the cosmetic face of the wheel at all. If your customers arrive on large-diameter aftermarket wheels, that is the difference between a job and a claim.

The turntable rotates at 7 RPM — deliberately slow. Speed is not the constraint on a wheel worth more than the tire on it; control is.

The balancer, and what "automatic 3D data entry" saves you

The PWB90XL is a computer-controlled spin balancer with a high-resolution video monitor and automatic 3D data entry. On an older balancer the operator measures rim distance, diameter and width by hand and types three numbers in, and every one of those numbers is a chance to balance a wheel to the wrong geometry. Automatic entry takes the measurements itself. It is the single largest source of wasted weight and repeat visits on a balancer, removed.

Around that: an LED light that illuminates the wheel and a laser line that shows exactly where the weight goes — again, aimed at operator error rather than machine capability. Optimatch, FES split-weight and OPF opposite-position functions handle the awkward cases where a rim needs weight it cannot take on one plane, and the machine self-diagnoses and self-calibrates rather than drifting quietly out of true.

Measured performance: 130 RPM balancing speed, weight position resolved to 1.4 degrees, readings to 1 gram, a cycle in about 7 seconds, and a display switchable between grams and ounces and between millimetres and inches. It takes rims from 10" to 30", rim widths from 1 1/2" to 20", tires up to 43" and wheels up to 165 lbs, on a 40mm shaft.

Perfect For

  • High-volume passenger and light truck tire shops, where the assist arms pay for themselves in wheels not damaged.
  • Wheel and tire retailers handling expensive aftermarket alloys and low-profile fitments daily.
  • Independent workshops fitting out a bay without the electrical budget for a heavy-current installation.
  • Dealership service departments where a marked wheel is a warranty conversation rather than an argument.

It is not truck equipment. The changer's clamping range stops at 30" and its maximum tire diameter at 47" — this is a car and light-truck cell, deliberately.

What's in the Box

  • Changer: dual assist arms and wheel lift, oiler, filter and regulator, plastic protectors, tire tool, lube bucket and lube brush, and an inflation box with gauge.
  • Balancer: 4 centering cones, a plastic quick-nut, wheel weight pliers and wheel measuring calipers.
  • Not included: the external air supply the changer needs.

Certification, honestly

Both machines are CE approved, and that is precisely what this page claims — no more. It is worth knowing what that marking is: a European conformity declaration made by the manufacturer against European directives. It is not a North American third-party listing, and it does not substitute for one. On tire equipment that distinction rarely comes up, because there is no equivalent North American third-party listing programme for changers and balancers the way there is for vehicle lifts. But if an insurer, a fleet policy or a local authority asks you for specific documentation, ask us first and we will supply whatever the manufacturer can evidence.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, lower 48. Two crates at 885 lbs and 290 lbs, so you will need a forklift, a loading dock, or a terminal pickup you collect yourself. A residential delivery carries a residential fee. Freight is quoted live at checkout rather than printed here — rates move, and a number set in a description ages into an argument.

Inspect before you sign. Look over both crates with the driver still there: corners, banding, wrap. Anything you find goes on the bill of lading before your signature does. Signing clean is a statement that the machines arrived undamaged.

Warranty

Both machines carry the Atlas Platinum 2 year parts only warranty — double the term on the standard truck changer line, and one of the more concrete reasons the Platinum equipment costs what it costs. Parts only means the component is covered and the labour to fit it is not.

Protect the claim by leaving the machine intact. Do not disassemble a unit before the claim is agreed — photograph the fault, call us, and let the process run. A stripped machine is usually where a warranty conversation stops.
