Hofmann GEODYNA 980L Heavy-Duty Wheel Balancer
Most heavy-duty balancers are sold as a bare machine and then quoted again in adapters. The GEODYNA 980L is the opposite: it arrives with truck centring cones for hub-piloted wheels, professional 4-star and 5-star centring arms for stud-piloted wheels, and a passenger/light-truck centring cone kit as standard equipment, and it includes a pneumatic wheel lift. That is the argument for this machine in one line — a shop that services commercial wheels in the morning and a customer's pickup in the afternoon does not have to buy a second tooling package, and nobody has to wrestle a loaded truck assembly onto the shaft by hand.
It is a two-plane dynamic balancer for trucks, buses, RVs and light-truck/automobile wheels, running on a single-phase supply rather than the three-phase service heavy-duty shop equipment usually demands.
Why off-the-vehicle, two-plane balancing pays for itself in tread
An out-of-balance truck wheel does not simply feel rough. It scrubs. Every rotation the heavy side loads the contact patch differently, and over tens of thousands of miles that shows up as irregular wear that shortens the life of an expensive commercial casing long before the tread depth is legally gone. Two-plane dynamic balancing corrects both the static imbalance (the heavy spot) and the dynamic couple (the wobble across the width of the wheel), which is the imbalance a bubble balancer cannot see at all. Doing it off the vehicle, on a shaft the machine controls, is what makes the second correction plane measurable. For a fleet, few interventions cost less per mile of tread saved.
The pneumatic wheel lift is a safety feature, not a convenience
A commercial wheel-and-tire assembly is an awkward, top-heavy load that has to be presented square to a shaft at roughly waist height. Lifting it by hand is the single most common way technicians hurt their backs in a tire shop, and it is also how shafts get bent and wheels get scratched. The integrated pneumatic lift raises the assembly and holds it at height while the operator centres it and fits the Quick Nut clamp, so the technician's job becomes alignment rather than deadlift. On a machine rated to accept wheels well beyond what one person should ever handle unaided, that matters every single day, not occasionally.
Semi-automatic data entry, and recalibration the operator can actually do
Wheel distance and diameter are entered semi-automatically using the geodata arm: the operator pulls the arm to the rim and the machine takes the dimensions itself. Manual keypad entry is where balancing errors are born — a mistyped rim diameter produces a confident, precise, wrong weight recommendation, and the technician has no reason to doubt it. Taking the dimension off the wheel removes that failure mode.
Calibration is the other half of the same argument. The 980L can be recalibrated by the operator in two steps. A balancer that drifts is worse than no balancer, because it adds weight in the wrong place, and a machine that needs a service call to re-zero tends to run out of calibration between visits simply because nobody wants to book the call.
Will It Fit?
Power. The 980L runs on 115 VAC / 8 Amps / 1Ph / 50/60Hz. Single-phase, ordinary shop voltage — which for a heavy-duty truck balancer is unusual and is worth weighing if your building has no three-phase service. It is still the customer's responsibility to provide a correctly rated, properly grounded dedicated circuit at the machine's location.
Air. The wheel lift is pneumatic, so the machine needs shop air run to it. Plan that line before the pallet arrives.
Floor and space. The unit measures 57" x 38.9" x 67.3" (1,448 x 988 x 1,710 mm) and weighs 560 lbs net. That is the machine alone — leave working room in front of it for a technician and a rolled-in truck wheel, and clearance above and to the sides for the wheel guard and the operator's reach. A sound, level concrete floor is assumed; confirming your slab is suitable is the customer's responsibility.

Two figures to confirm before you order
Largest wheel it takes. Published figures differ. The product overview says the 980L handles wheels from the smallest, 12" (30.5 cm), up to heavy-duty 25" and super-singles; the feature list on this same page says 12" to heavy-duty 24.5". Both figures are printed above, each against the source that publishes it. If your wheels sit at that limit, ask us and we will confirm the current figure against the factory sheet before you order.
Maximum wheel weight. Published figures for the maximum wheel weight also differ between the specification table on this page and the product's summary specification, and the table's value is the one printed above. If you are balancing at the top of the range, confirm the limit with us in writing first — this is a number where being approximately right is not good enough.
Certification and compliance, honestly
The product data we hold for the 980L does not record an independent third-party safety listing, and we will not imply one. A manufacturer's own conformity declaration and an accredited third party's listing are different documents doing different jobs, and one is not a substitute for the other. If your insurer, a fleet policy, a franchise standard or your local authority having jurisdiction requires a particular listing for shop equipment, find out exactly which one, and let us confirm this machine's paperwork against that requirement before you commit.

This is freight equipment shipped within the lower 48 states. Delivery for Hofmann machines is covered by the Pick Up and Delivery section further down this page and differs from our general freight terms — read it, and if it does not match what you are shown at checkout, confirm with us before ordering. Regardless of who delivers it: inspect before you sign. Check the crate for punctures, crushed corners, a shifted load or broken banding, and write anything you find on the bill of lading at the time of delivery. Signing a clean BOL states that the equipment arrived undamaged, and that is very hard to walk back later.
Warranty
Coverage runs through our published warranty claims process. We have not quoted a term here because the data we hold for this model does not state one, and an invented warranty length helps nobody. One rule that applies to every machine we sell: do not strip a suspect assembly before opening a claim. Photograph the fault in place, note the serial number, and contact us first — equipment that has already been taken apart is often outside the terms of a claim that would otherwise have been paid.
