Description
-Triumph NTC-650: a 26″ rim limit and a 30.5″ wheel width, which is the unusual part
Read a heavy-duty tire changer spec sheet and your eye goes to rim diameter. It is the wrong number to fixate on. The NTC-650 clamps rims to 26″ (660 mm), which is ordinary for a truck machine — but it takes a wheel up to 30.5″ across, and that is what actually separates it from machines quoting a similar rim figure. Wide-base singles, super-singles, flotation tires and dual-mount assemblies are limited by how far the machine can work across the wheel, not by how big the rim is. A changer that clamps big but works narrow still sends the wide tire back out to a mobile service.
Its outer envelope is a tire up to 63″ (1,600 mm) in overall diameter. Together those three figures describe a machine aimed squarely at truck, bus and larger commercial work rather than at the outsized agricultural end of the market.
Fixed tower, single tower assist
The NTC-650 is built as a fixed-tower machine with a single tower assist, and both halves of that description have consequences a buyer can feel.
A fixed tower means the mounting column is a rigid structural member rather than a swing-away arm. Every time a stiff commercial sidewall resists the head, that reaction load has to go somewhere; on a fixed tower it goes into structure, not into a pivot and its bearings. The practical result is a machine that holds its head position accurately after a year of heavy work instead of developing the play that makes an operator start compensating by feel.
A single tower assist means one powered arm supporting the tire during mount and demount. It is not the two-arm arrangement found on machines built for low-profile passenger work, and it is not pretending to be. For truck tires — where the problem is mass and stiffness rather than delicate sidewall geometry — one strong assist plus a high-torque turntable is the right tool. The hydraulics carry a wheel that two people would struggle to lift, and adjustable clamps hold it square to the table through the whole rotation, which protects the rim face and keeps the operator out of the way of a shifting load.
What it does not have
This model does not include bead blast. Bead blast is a burst of air fired into the sidewall to break a bonded bead or to seat a stubborn one, and on corroded fleet wheels or cold tubeless tires some shops rely on it heavily. We would rather put that in the third section of the page than in the fine print. Will It Fit?
Confirming the bay is ready is the buyer's responsibility. These are the numbers to measure against before the machine is on a truck.
- Power. 220 Volt. If the bay has only general-purpose outlets, get the electrician booked ahead of delivery rather than after it.
- Air. Rated to a maximum of 120 PSI (8.3 Bar). Size the compressor and the line for sustained work, not for topping up tires between jobs.
- Getting it in. It crates at 80″ x 63″ x 36″ (2,032 mm x 1,600 mm x 914 mm) and weighs 1,420 lbs. Check the door opening, the route to its final position, and that the floor takes a point load of that order.
- Working space. A 63″ tire has a swept circle far larger than the machine's own footprint. Leave room on the operator side to roll a tire in and out without lifting it, and keep the path between the door and the machine clear.
Rim diameter, wheel width, tire diameter: pass all three
These limits are not a ranking, they are a gate, and a wheel has to clear every one of them. Rim diameter decides whether the jaws can hold the wheel at all. Wheel width decides whether the clamps and the head can be positioned across it. Tire diameter decides whether the assembled wheel clears the machine as the table turns. A job fails at whichever limit it meets first, and the one people fail to check is almost always the middle one — which is precisely why the 30.5″ figure on this machine is worth the attention.
Before you order, take the largest wheel that regularly comes through your door and measure all three dimensions on it, not just the rim marking. Look the crate over before you sign for it. Crushed corners, punctured panels, broken banding and any sign the unit has been tipped are what matter; write whatever you find onto the bill of lading while the driver is still there, and photograph it. Once a clean bill of lading is signed, the carrier holds evidence that the shipment arrived intact, and unwinding that afterwards is difficult.
