Triumph NTC-950-2: the tire changer that arrives with the accessories already in the crate

The unadvertised cost of a tire changer is the second order. You buy the machine, and then you find out the mount/demount head that came with it is the wrong material for the rims you actually work on, that the clamps will mark an alloy wheel, and that there is no soap tank. Bead blast: what it actually does

Bead blasting fires a sudden volume of air into the sidewall gap as the tyre sits on the rim, forcing the bead outward so it seats against the flange and the tyre begins to hold pressure. Without it, a stubborn low-profile or run-flat tyre becomes a wrestling match with ratchet straps and, in the worst cases, techniques nobody should be using in a professional shop. With it, seating a difficult bead is a pedal press rather than a fifteen-minute fight, which is the difference between a job that pays and a job that costs you the bay.

Dual assist arms and why clamping range matters twice

The assist arms hold the sidewall down and away from the bead-breaking edge while the head does its work. On a modern low-profile tyre the sidewall is short and stiff enough that it will not stay where you put it by hand, so the arms are not a luxury item — they are the reason the machine can do the tyres it claims. They also take the load off the operator, which shows up over a full day rather than on a single job.

The two clamping ranges quoted for a wheel-clamp changer are not alternatives, they are two different grips. Clamping from the inside of the rim, the range is 16 to 28 inches, which is what you use on a large truck or SUV wheel. Clamping from the outside, it is 14 to 26 inches, which is what you use on a passenger car wheel where an inside grip would foul the drop centre.
