Triumph NTC-690: a tire changer built around a 56″ rim

Almost every machine sold as a "truck tire changer" is really a passenger-car layout stretched upward, and it runs out of clamping range long before the biggest wheel in the yard is on it. The NTC-690 starts from the other end. Its table clamps rims up to 56″ (1,422 mm) in diameter, takes a wheel up to 42″ (1,067 mm) wide, and handles a tire up to 90″ (2,286 mm) in overall diameter. Those three numbers together are the whole reason this machine exists: they cover earthmover, agricultural and industrial wheels that a conventional truck changer physically cannot grip.

Two facts belong at the top rather than buried in the small print. First, this is a special order item, and it will not ship for 2-3 months — it is built and shipped against the order rather than pulled from a shelf, so it needs to be on a plan, not an emergency. Second, it is a fixed-tower machine with a single tower assist, which is a real design choice with real consequences, and we explain what that means further down instead of listing it as a feature word.

Will It Fit?

A machine this size is a building decision as much as an equipment decision. Every figure below is worth checking against your own shop before you order, and confirming the site is ready is the buyer's responsibility.

• Power. The NTC-690 runs on 220 Volt. If your bay only has general-purpose single-phase outlets, budget for an electrician before delivery, not after the crate arrives.
• Air. Rated to a maximum of 120 PSI (8.3 Bar). Your compressor and your line size have to keep up with that while the machine is working, which on a busy day means a compressor sized for continuous duty rather than for topping up tires.
• Getting it in the door. It crates at 78″ x 63″ x 35″ (1,981 mm x 1,600 mm x 889 mm) and weighs 2,400 lbs. Measure the roller door and the path from it to the machine's final position, and check the floor will take a point load of that order.
• Working room around it. The clamping table takes a wheel up to 90″ across, so the swept circle of a tire on the table is far wider than the machine's own footprint. Leave clearance on the operator side for the tire to be rolled in and rolled off without being lifted.

Why the clamping range is the spec that matters

Rim diameter is the hard limit on a tire changer, and it is the one that ends a job. A wheel that is a half-inch outside the clamp range does not go on "carefully" — it does not go on at all, and it goes back on the truck. Buying to 56″ rather than to the size of the wheels you have today is what stops that call happening in a year's time, when the fleet mix has changed or a new customer turns up with an agricultural wheel on a trailer.

The 42″ width figure is the one people forget to check, and it is the reason a machine that can hold a big rim still cannot service a big tire. Wide-base singles, flotation tires and industrial wheels are limited by how far the clamping jaws and the mount head can be set apart across the wheel, not by the diameter. A changer that clamps large but only handles a narrow wheel will still refuse the tire on the trailer outside.

Fixed tower, single assist, hydraulic power

The NTC-690 uses a fixed tower with a single tower assist. A fixed tower means the mounting column is a rigid structure bolted to the machine rather than a swing-out arm, so the reaction load from a stiff, oversized sidewall goes into a heavy structural member instead of into a pivot. On a tire that takes real force to break and to seat, that rigidity is what keeps the head where the operator put it, and it is the difference between a machine that stays accurate after a year of heavy work and one that develops play.

The hydraulic system and the high-torque turntable are what let one operator manage a wheel that two people could not lift. Torque, not speed, is what a large agricultural or industrial tire needs: the bead has to be walked around the rim under continuous pressure rather than snatched. The adjustable clamps hold that wheel square to the table for the whole rotation, which protects both the rim face and the operator, because a wheel that shifts under load on a machine this size is not a small problem.

One thing this machine does not do

The NTC-690 does not include bead blast. Bead blast fires a burst of air into the sidewall to help seat a stubborn bead, and on tubeless truck and agricultural tires some shops rely on it heavily. If that is part of how you work, say so before you order and we will point you at the models in the line that carry it. That is worth settling now rather than on the first difficult tire.

Certification, stated plainly

We do not list a third-party safety listing for this machine, and we are not going to imply one by using an acronym the manufacturer's own data does not claim. That distinction matters more than it sounds: a manufacturer's own declaration of conformity is a statement the builder makes about itself, while a third-party listing is an independent body testing and auditing the product. They are different documents and they are not substitutes for each other. If your insurer, your parent company's safety policy or your local authority requires a specific named listing on shop equipment, confirm that requirement before you order and ask us what documentation ships with the machine. Shipping and delivery

This machine moves by freight truck to addresses in the lower 48 states. Freight is quoted live at checkout for your address, so what you see is a current carrier rate rather than a stale estimate. At 2,400 lbs crated, unloading is the receiver's responsibility — you need a forklift, a loading dock or a machine capable of taking it off the trailer. If none of those is realistic where the machine is going, collecting from the carrier's local terminal is usually the easier route, because the terminal already has the equipment. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, applied at checkout when you select it.

Inspect the crate before you sign for it. Look for crushed corners, punctured panels, shifted banding and any sign the unit has been tipped, write what you find onto the bill of lading while the driver is still there, and photograph it. A clean signed bill of lading is the carrier's evidence that everything arrived intact, and unwinding that afterwards is difficult.

One warning applies to every hydraulic machine regardless of who built it: if something fails, do not take the power unit, a cylinder or the turntable drive apart before a claim has been opened. A disassembled component is normally treated as a modified component, and that is the quickest way to lose cover that would otherwise have been paid.
