-Ranger R980XR Tire Changer with LS43B Laser Balancer and Weights
The reason to look at this package rather than the cheaper pairing next to it is the LS43B. It is a laser balancer: instead of telling the technician the correction and leaving them to judge where on the rim it goes, it projects laser lines that mark the inboard and outboard weight positions on the wheel itself. That converts the last and least controlled step in balancing from a judgement into an instruction.
The error that a laser removes
A balancer's measurement is the easy part. The hard part happens afterwards, when a person decides where the weight goes. Angular position is set by rotating the wheel to a mark and the radial position by eye; put a weight a little off the correct plane, or a little around from the correct angle, and the machine will report a residual imbalance on the confirmation spin that the technician then chases with a second weight. Two technicians can balance the same wheel to different totals purely because of where they placed the first one. Laser lines projected onto the rim take the judgement out: the position is shown on the part, not described on a screen, and the placement is the same regardless of who is holding the weight. Repeatability between people is the property that actually reduces comebacks in a shop with more than one technician.
Weight consumption is a real line item
Better placement means less weight. Every gram that is placed inefficiently has to be compensated for somewhere else on the rim, and a wheel that has been chased with three weights instead of finished with one costs three times the consumable and looks it. Over a year of tire work the difference is a genuine number on a purchase order, and unlike most efficiency claims it is one you can watch happen on the second spin.
The R980XR: a swing-arm changer, deliberately without an assist tower
The changer here is the swing-arm R980XR with a 30" capacity. It is the same basic platform as the assist-tower machines in the range, with the tower left off, and that is a legitimate choice rather than a compromise. An assist tower earns its cost on stiff sidewalls — run-flats, reinforced light-truck tires, aggressive off-road rubber. On general repair work, racing tires, pickup tires and ordinary beads that do not put up a fight, the tower spends the day parked. If that describes your work, the R980XR does the same job in less floor space and puts the money you saved into the laser balancer, which is used on every single wheel.
The swing arm itself
A swing-arm design moves the mount and demount head clear of the wheel sideways rather than tilting a column back. The practical consequence is footprint: the machine can be placed close to a wall because it does not need clearance behind it, and the technician approaches from the front. In a bay where every square foot is spoken for, that is worth more than it sounds.
Weights included
Adhesive steel tape weights come with the package, black and silver combination, on rolls, each segment a quarter of an ounce and 1/2" wide, the set listed at 22 lbs. There is a neat logic to including them here: a laser balancer's whole argument is precise placement, and precise placement is a tape weight on a clean rim face, not a clip-on hammered onto a flange. The shaft on the LS43B is 36 mm, which is the size any additional cones or adapters need to match.
Perfect For
Multi-technician tire shops, where the consistency between operators is the point of the laser rather than a bonus. General repair shops adding wheel service and wanting to be right the first time on wheels they see once. High-end and alloy-heavy work, where a visible or badly placed weight is a complaint. Performance and track-day shops where balance quality is the product. Fleet operations with ordinary sidewalls that do not need an assist tower and would rather spend the difference on the balancer.

Certification, plainly
No independent third-party safety listing is published for either machine in this package, and we would rather write that sentence than let its absence pass unremarked. Tire changers and balancers usually sit outside the third-party listing regime that covers vehicle lifts; that is a fact about the equipment category and not an answer for an underwriter. If your insurance, a fleet contract or local licensing asks for documentation on powered shop equipment, ask us what the manufacturer publishes for these models before you commit.
Getting it there
Freight, lower 48 states. Plan the unload in advance: forklift, or pallet jack and a couple of people on a level surface, or terminal pickup from the carrier if the building has no dock. Residential delivery is available with a residential fee applied. Look the freight over while the driver waits and note any damage on the delivery paperwork before you sign — signing clean is what makes a claim difficult later. Warehouse pickup can be arranged at the locations shown further down this page.
Warranty
A single warranty document covers the manufacturer's range; ask and we will send the current version for these models instead of summarising a term on a product page. Whatever it says, one thing is on you: open a claim before anybody disassembles a faulty machine. A stripped unit is a hard unit to warrant, and the diagnosis that was supposed to save a day of downtime is the usual reason a good claim becomes an argument.
