A short test for whether you need an assist tower
Work through your last week of tire jobs. Count the ones where a bead genuinely resisted — a run-flat, a reinforced load-range light-truck tire, an aggressive off-road carcass with a stiff sidewall, a low-profile performance tire on a wide rim. If that count is a meaningful share of the total, buy a machine with an assist tower and stop reading here; the tower is worth its cost and your technicians will tell you so. If the count is a handful, the tower will spend the year parked in your bay taking up floor space and capital, and the R980XR is the machine that matches the work. Racing tires, ordinary pickup tires and general repair work are exactly what it was positioned for.
What the swing arm does for the bay
The mount and demount head on a swing-arm changer moves out sideways and clear of the wheel rather than tilting backwards on a column. Being honest about what you give up
A stiff sidewall on this machine will be a physical job. The bead lever, the lubricant and the technician's technique do the work that an assist tower would otherwise do, and on a genuinely difficult tire that means more time and more opportunity to mark a rim. If a customer arrives with a set of run-flats, you will change them — but you will feel the difference. We would rather write that sentence than have you discover it in the third week.

Delivery to your shop
