Description
-Ranger R980XR Swing Arm / 30" Capacity Tire Changer
Ranger R980XR: the changer that installs flush against a wall
The R980XR is the space-saver in Ranger's swing-arm line. Its tower is rigid and fixed rather than tilting, which means it needs no clearance behind it to lean into, and the machine can be installed flush against a wall instead of standing out in the middle of a bay. Recommended footprint is 55" x 50" x 78" (1,397 mm x 1,270 mm x 1,981 mm), and it crates at 742 lbs. (337 kg). If floor space is the constraint on adding tire service to your shop — and in most shops it is — that is the specification that decides the purchase.
What you get for the smaller envelope is a straightforward, full-capacity professional changer: 30" turntable clamping, a 3 HP electric turntable, dual pneumatic bead breaking, and both alloy-steel and plastic-polymer mount/demount heads in the crate.
A rigid tower is a design choice, not a compromise
Tilt-back towers exist to give ground clearance over the turntable when loading. A rigid tower gives something different: nothing to move, nothing to return to position, and no pivot mechanism to wear or drift. On the everyday work most repair shops actually do — commuter cars, pick-ups and SUVs on tires whose beads are not trying to defeat you — that simplicity is what you want. It is also why this machine works so well as a second unit alongside a more specialised one, taking the routine volume so the specialist machine is free for the difficult fitments.
The swing-arm layout completes the picture. The arm moves aside laterally to clear the wheel, so access to the turntable is open from the front and the operator is not working around a fixed structure.
Where the machine spends its time: the turntable and the bead breaker
The turntable is driven by a high-torque 3 HP electric motor at 220 VAC, 50/60 Hz, with reversible direction. Reversibility is not a convenience feature on a tire changer. When a bead grabs, being able to back the table off by a few degrees and take another run at it is the alternative to forcing the tool through — and controlled speed gives a low-profile or run-flat bead the moment it needs to relax rather than tear. The motor itself uses copper rotor construction, quality bearings, thermal-cool epoxy insulation and a rolled steel frame, which is the specification of a motor built to run all day rather than intermittently.
Bead breaking is pneumatic and dual, working the blade in both directions. Air requirement is 140-165 PSI, and it is worth sizing your compressor against the burst demand rather than the average: bead breaking and bead seating both ask for a large volume of air in a very short window. Stainless steel and aluminium pneumatic cylinders reduce machine vibration and run with low friction, and internal end-of-stroke cushions are standard so seals, wear bands and rods are not being slammed at the limit of travel on every cycle.
The 45 mm tool shaft, and why the shaft section matters
The vertical tool shaft is a 45 mm spring-assisted hexagonal section, paired with a hardened-steel horizontal outrigger support arm. Two details are doing the work there. Hexagonal means the head cannot rotate on the shaft under load, so the angle you set is the angle it keeps for the whole procedure. Spring assist means the operator is not lifting the mass of the head assembly by hand on every wheel — a small ergonomic saving that turns into a real one across fifty wheels in a day.
Holding the head in exactly the position you set it is not a comfort feature. A head that shifts a few degrees under load is a head that touches a rim flange, and that is how a customer's wheel picks up a mark.
Heads, clamps and capacity
Both an alloy-steel mount/demount head and a plastic-polymer head are supplied. The polymer head is the one to reach for on alloy and finished wheels, where the entire risk is metal touching a surface the customer will inspect. Adjustable clamps hold the wheel on the turntable, and maximum rim width is 15" (381 mm) with maximum tire diameter 50" (1,270 mm) — those two figures, plus the 30" turntable clamping capacity, are what to check your typical work against.
An inflation restraint device is part of the standard equipment, along with an inflation gauge with integrated air dump valve, a pressure regulator/limiter, water filter, oiler/lubricator and air regulator. The regulator and limiter pair deserve a mention: over-inflation during seating is the genuinely dangerous failure mode in tire fitting, and a limiter is the component that stops it being possible rather than merely discouraged.
Will it fit
Allow 55" x 50" x 78" (1,397 mm x 1,270 mm x 1,981 mm) as a working footprint, and remember that figure already assumes the machine can sit close to a wall. The shipping crate is 45" x 50" x 68" (1,143 mm x 1,270 mm x 1,727 mm) at 742 lbs. (337 kg), so unloading needs a forklift or a dock — decide which before the delivery is booked. Power is a 220V circuit; air is a compressor that can hold 140-165 PSI under burst demand. Confirming both are available where the machine will stand is the buyer's responsibility and takes one walk round the bay with a tape measure.

One thing to confirm before you order
The manufacturer's own data describes this model two ways where the assist tower is concerned. The product overview presents the R980XR as the version of the machine supplied without an assist tower, and the standard equipment list contains no assist-tower components. The specification table, meanwhile, carries a row reading single-tower assist. If a powered assist tower is part of why you are buying, confirm the configuration with us in writing before ordering — we will check it against Ranger's current factory specification.
Certification and compliance, stated honestly
The product data we hold for the R980XR claims no third-party safety listing, and we will not suggest otherwise. Some insurers, fleet policies and local jurisdictions require shop equipment carrying an independent test-house listing — a document issued by an outside laboratory, not a manufacturer's own declaration of conformity. Check the exact wording of your requirement before ordering, and ask us if you want help matching it to a machine.
Shipping and delivery
This machine ships as freight inside the lower 48 states. Unloading is arranged at the receiving end: a forklift, a dock with a pallet jack, or a collection you make from the carrier's terminal. Delivery to a residential address is a different service from a commercial dock and carries a residential fee, which checkout quotes live when you order. Inspect the crate before you sign and record any damage on the bill of lading in the driver's presence — after a clean signature, a damage claim is very hard to pursue.
Warranty
Coverage is per the manufacturer's published warranty document for this product; ask and we will send you the current version before you order. Do not dismantle a pneumatic cylinder, control valve or the tower assembly to diagnose a fault before a claim is raised. Taking the part apart destroys the evidence a claim is judged on, and it normally ends coverage on the component you were trying to save.
