Ranger R980DP Tire Changer, Swing Arm with Dual Tower Assist

Bought on its own rather than as part of a package, the R980DP makes a specific argument: it is a swing-arm machine that sits flush against a wall, it carries two powered assist arms instead of one, and it seats a stubborn bead with a burst of air rather than with a technician's patience. If you already own a balancer you are happy with, this is the machine that upgrades the half of the job that hurts.

TurboBlast: the difference between seating a bead and fighting one

Seating a bead is the point in a tire change where things go wrong. A tire that will not take air sits loose on the rim, the inflator cannot build pressure because the air is escaping as fast as it goes in, and the traditional answers all involve a technician doing something with a strap, a ratchet or a can of something flammable. The TurboBlast system releases a high-pressure burst between the tire and the rim, which pushes both beads outward against the rim seat simultaneously and lets the inflator do its job. Paired with the hands-free foot-pedal inflator, the whole sequence is a pedal press rather than a two-person operation. On low-profile and wide-fitment tires — the ones that are hardest to seat — that is the single feature most likely to change how long a job takes.

Two assist arms, not one

The dual pneumatic assist arms are the other half of the same story, applied at the other end of the job. A stiff sidewall does not want to let the bead drop into the well of the rim, and holding it there is what an assist arm does. Two of them mean the bead can be held on both sides of the mount head at once, so the tire stays in the position the geometry requires rather than the position one arm can force it into. Run-flats are the headline case. In practice heavy light-truck tires and stiff performance rubber are where two arms save the technician's shoulder every single day.

The drive, the bead loosener and the frame

The turntable drive is electric with reversible direction under foot-pedal control, which matters more than it sounds: a technician who has taken a bead a little too far can back the table out rather than push it through and risk the rim. Bead loosening is done by a large stainless cylinder with pneumatic accelerators working in both directions, and the blade is adjustable across multiple axes so one blade suits a narrow passenger tire and a wide truck tire without either being hit at the wrong angle. The bead-breaker arm is box-frame construction — a closed section rather than an open channel — which is what stops a machine's alignment drifting after a year of absorbing shock loads. Foot pedals are forged steel rather than cast iron, cylinders are stainless steel and aluminium, and the gearbox is a sealed oil and grease reservoir with no scheduled maintenance.

Protecting the rim

RimGuard clamps hold wheels from 9" to 30" without a bare steel face touching the rim, and a plastic wheel protector kit ships as standard with clamp covers, bead-breaker blade boots and tool head inserts. There is also a polymer mount and demount head option to keep metal off a delicate wheel entirely, and a hardened steel head with a micro-smooth surface for everything else. This is not decoration. A marked rim on a customer's alloy is a real cost, and every one of these items exists because somebody once paid for a refinish.

Will It Fit?

Overall size is 47" L x 60" W x 82" H (1200 mm x 1530 mm x 2090 mm). Because the arm swings sideways rather than tilting back, the machine can be installed flush to a wall and worked from the front, which is frequently what makes it fit a bay that a tilt-back machine will not. It takes rims from 9" to 30" clamped internally and 9" to 26" externally, mounts tire widths of 4" to 15", breaks beads on widths of 1.5" to 13", and handles tires up to 50" in diameter. The drive system is listed as electric and air, so shop air is required as well as a circuit.

A note on the motor, because our own data is not tidy

The specification table on this page gives the motor as 208-240 VAC, 50-60 HZ. The feature list on the same page offers a choice: a 208-240V motor for heavy-duty use, or a 110V motor for plug-and-play convenience where a heavier circuit is not available. Those two statements are not contradictory — the table documents one variant — but only one motor will arrive on your machine, and which one it is changes what your electrician needs to do. Confirm the motor option with us when you order rather than assuming the table describes the unit you are buying.

Perfect For

Shops that already run a balancer they are satisfied with and need the changer to catch up. High-volume tire operations where seating difficult beads is a daily event rather than an occasional one. Dealership and fleet service departments handling light-truck and run-flat fitments. Performance and off-road shops working with stiff sidewalls and wide, low-profile tires. Bays where floor space is the binding constraint and a wall-mounted position is the only way a machine of this capability gets in.

What's in the Box

  • R980DP swing-arm tire changer with dual pneumatic assist arms
  • Plastic wheel protector kit: RimGuard clamp covers, bead-breaker blade boots, tool head inserts
  • Mounting head plastic protector kit
  • Hardened steel tire iron and bead lever tool

That list is taken from the feature information published for this machine. A balancer is not included — this is the changer on its own — and if you need both, we sell them together as a package.

Certification, said rather than skirted

We publish no independent third-party safety listing for this changer and we are not going to let the omission speak for itself. Powered tire changers generally fall outside the third-party listing scheme that governs vehicle lifts, which is a description of the category rather than a document you can produce for anybody. If an insurer, a fleet contract or a municipal licensing rule asks for conformity paperwork on powered shop equipment, ask us what the manufacturer publishes for this model before you place the order, not after the inspector has asked.

Delivery

Shipped as freight inside the lower 48 states. You will need to get a crated machine off a truck: forklift, or a pallet jack and hands on level ground, or terminal pickup from the carrier, which is often the sensible route without a dock. Residential delivery is available and a residential fee applies. Inspect the crate while the driver is present and note any damage on the delivery paperwork before you sign, because a clean signature is the first thing a carrier will point to. Warehouse pickup is offered at the locations listed further down this page.

Warranty

One warranty document covers the manufacturer's product range; ask and we will send the current version for this model rather than summarise a term here that you would then be relying on. Whatever the term, open a claim before anybody dismantles the machine. A changer that has already been taken apart for diagnosis is very difficult to warrant, and that teardown is the most common reason a straightforward claim turns into a negotiation.
