Ranger R76ATR-L: a power-assist tire changer that runs on a 110V circuit
Most tire changers with a powered assist tower assume you have three-phase, or at least a heavier single-phase drop, already run into the bay. The R76ATR-L does not. It is the 110V configuration of Ranger's tilt-back assist machine: a 2 HP motor at 110V, 50/60 Hz, behind a 20 amp breaker. That single specification is the reason this model exists, and it is the reason to choose it — because the electrical supply, not the machine, is usually what decides whether a small shop or a serious private workshop can own equipment of this class at all.
Nothing is traded away in the tooling to get there. You still get the tilt-back tower, the right-side power assist arm, the RimGuard clamps and the TurboBlast seating system. What changes is the circuit it plugs into.
Start with the circuit, not the machine
A 20 amp breaker is a step up from the circuit an ordinary household outlet sits on, so this is worth checking rather than assuming. What you are looking for is a dedicated 110V, 20 amp circuit terminating where the machine will actually stand — not a shared circuit that also runs a compressor, and not an extension lead. A motor that has to start against a loaded turntable draws its heaviest current in the first fraction of a second, and an undersized or shared supply shows up as nuisance tripping under exactly the conditions where you least want to stop.
Confirming the circuit, the breaker rating and the run length is the buyer's responsibility, and it is a short conversation with an electrician rather than a project. Do it before delivery. The commonest cause of a new machine sitting in its crate is not a fault, it is a socket that was never installed.
The tilt-back tower and why it saves setups
The tower on this machine pivots backwards, clear of the turntable, rather than standing fixed above it. Two consequences follow. Ground clearance over the table opens up, which makes loading a heavy assembly and reaching a valve stem with an inflator chuck a great deal easier. And the mount/demount head does not have to be re-set for each new wheel, because the vertical shaft locks pneumatically and returns the head to the position you last chose. Working through a matched set of four wheels, the head is set once rather than four times.
Rubber bump-stops absorb the tower's return so the stop is cushioned instead of shock-loaded. That is a longevity detail more than a convenience one: a mechanism that is hammered at the end of every cycle drifts out of adjustment, and the whole point of a locking tool head is that its setting stays true.
Where the assist tower earns its place
A run-flat or a low-profile tire has a sidewall stiff enough that it will not simply fold into the drop-centre of the rim on its own, and forcing it is how sidewalls get damaged. The right-side assist tower addresses that mechanically. A multi-profile traveling drop-centre tool holds the bead down in the well of the rim where the circumference is smallest, so the head has somewhere to work. A power-drop upper bead assist roller keeps a top bead in place during mounting. A lower-bead lifting disc unseats a reluctant bottom bead, or simply lifts the tire enough for a tool to go under it.
Controls for all of it are up front, with an articulating arm so the assist components go where the wheel needs them. The carriage is cast iron on linear way bearings — the version of that mechanism you do not have to grease.
Clamping, heads and the wheels you cannot afford to mark
RimGuard clamps are hardened steel with multi-tooth internal and external jaws, and their position is adjustable anywhere within the range instead of having to cycle the full travel to reach a setting. The turntable's clamping capacity runs to 30", and maximum tire diameter is 43" (1,092 mm) with a maximum rim width of 15" (381 mm) — those three figures are the ones to check your customers' wheels against.
Two mount/demount heads are supplied. The hardened alloy-steel head is equi-dimensional, so mounting and demounting happen without repositioning it, and its face is finished smooth so a bead slides rather than drags. A nylon head is standard equipment for alloy and powder-coated rims, and it is the item that prevents the single most expensive kind of comeback: a witness mark on a wheel that was perfect when it arrived. A hardened-steel horizontal outrigger arm and a spring-assisted hexagonal vertical shaft keep the head in position throughout the procedure.
Bead breaking and air supply
The bead-breaker blade is driven by bilateral pneumatic accelerators, so it moves quickly in both directions and the return stroke is not wasted time. The blade is multi-axis adjustable, which is what lets one machine cope with a low-profile passenger fitment and a light-truck tire whose bead sits somewhere quite different. Stainless steel cylinder construction is there because shop air carries moisture, and moisture is what kills pneumatic bores from the inside.
Air requirement is 110-175 PSI. Size the compressor for burst demand rather than average demand: a bead breaker followed by a TurboBlast seating cycle asks for a lot of air in a very short window, and a compressor chosen for impact wrenches will leave you waiting on recovery between wheels.
Will it fit
Allow a recommended footprint of 60" x 50" x 78", which includes the room to work around the machine rather than only the machine itself. It arrives crated at 50" x 50" x 68" and 920 lbs. (417 kg), so unloading needs a forklift or a dock — plan that before the delivery is booked.
