Description
-Ranger R745 Swing Arm Tire Changer / 21" Capacity
The rigidity comes from a 45mm hexagonal vertical shaft. On a tire changer, flex is the enemy: a tower that deflects under load lets the mount/demount head wander away from the rim edge, and that is how bead damage and scratched wheels happen. The R745 uses a 45mm hexagonal shaft rather than a round one — the hex section resists twist as well as bend — tied to a hardened-steel horizontal outrigger support arm. It is a plain, mechanical answer to the problem, and it is the reason this machine holds its geometry.
This is an entry-level, single-tower assist changer aimed at passenger cars, spare wheels and trailer tires: gas stations, roadside operations, small independents and well-equipped home shops. It is built to be fast and simple rather than to service every wheel ever made, and it is honest about that.
"Swing arm" and "fixed tower" both describe this machine
Worth clearing up, because both phrases appear on this page. The swing arm is the mount/demount head assembly, which swings clear of the turntable so a wheel can be loaded and unloaded without threading it past the tooling. The tower itself is fixed — it does not tilt back the way a tilt-tower machine does. Those are two different parts of the machine, and this one is a swing-arm changer built on a rigid, non-tilting tower. A fixed tower is stiffer than a tilting one by construction, which is the whole point of the 45mm shaft above.
Clamping and capacity — confirm these against your rims
Published figures for this machine differ on its clamping ranges and its maximum tire diameter. The specification table on this page states:
| Inside (wheel) clamping range | 10" - 16" (254 mm - 406 mm) |
| Outside (wheel) clamping range | 12" - 20" (304 mm - 508 mm) |
| Maximum rim width | 11" (279 mm) |
| Maximum tire diameter | 36" (914 mm) |
The product title advertises 21" capacity, and a separate specification record carries a different pair of clamping ranges and a larger maximum tire diameter again. Each set is attributed to its source here rather than averaged together or narrowed to the flattering one. If you are buying this changer for a specific rim size — anything at the top of the range, or a low-profile fitment — contact us first and we will confirm the clamping range against the machine before it ships. For ordinary passenger and trailer work, every version of the figures above covers it comfortably.
The turntable and the bead breaker
Four clamps hold the wheel, working internally or externally depending on how the rim is shaped, and they are driven by dual pneumatic cylinders — two cylinders rather than one keeps the clamping force even across the table, which matters on a wheel that is not perfectly flat. The turntable itself is electrically driven and high-torque, with reverse-direction control, so a bead that starts to go wrong can be backed off instead of forced.
Bead breaking is pneumatic, through a blade designed for mechanical strength over a long service life, and a rubber bump stop catches the arm on return. That bump stop is a small part doing real work: without it, every return cycle hammers the pneumatic cylinder and the surrounding structure, and it is those thousands of small impacts, rather than any single event, that loosen a machine over the years.
Built to be left alone
The foot pedal levers are forged steel — lighter than cast iron, and unlike cast iron they do not sit and rust in the wet corner of a bay where soap, water and tire lubricant end up. The pneumatic tubing is high-pressure polyurethane, chosen for abrasion resistance and because it will not kink when a hose is pinched behind the tower. The construction is sealed against dust and contamination, and the gearbox is maintenance-free with a purpose-engineered drive belt. None of that is exciting; all of it is the difference between a changer that is running in five years and one that is not.
Will It Fit?
- Recommended footprint: 50" x 50" x 75" (1,270 mm x 1,270 mm x 1,905 mm) — this is working clearance, not just the machine
- Motor: 110 or 220 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 1 Ph
- Air requirement: 110-175 PSI
- Drive system: electric / air — it needs both
- Shipping weight: 466 lbs. (211 kg)
- Shipping dimensions: 40" x 50" x 65" (1,016 mm x 1,270 mm x 1,651 mm)
Take the recommended footprint seriously. A tire changer needs room for a wheel to be swung on and off the table, not just room for the machine to stand, and the 50" x 50" x 75" figure reflects that. This machine also needs an electrical supply and a compressed air line at the pressure above; a bay with one but not the other is a common and avoidable disappointment. Confirming both is the buyer's responsibility, and we are happy to walk through it with you before you order.

Certification, honestly
Our record for this changer claims no third-party safety listing, and we are not going to imply one. A tire changer is not regulated in the way vehicle lifting equipment is, so for most buyers this is not a purchasing factor. Where it can matter is a commercial insurer or a corporate policy that requires listed equipment across a facility. If that describes you, ask us before ordering and we will tell you exactly what documentation the manufacturer supplies.
Shipping and delivery
The R745 ships as freight within the lower 48 states, crated at 466 lbs. (211 kg). The carrier delivers to the back of the truck; getting it down and inside is the buyer's arrangement, so plan for a forklift, a dock, or terminal pickup — many shops taking a machine this size choose the terminal. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, quoted live at checkout. Inspect before you sign: write any damage onto the delivery receipt, photograph the crate while the driver is still there, and contact us the same day.
Warranty
Ranger publishes the warranty terms for this machine in the warranty document linked on this page, and that document governs. If something goes wrong, talk to us before dismantling anything — a sealed gearbox or pneumatic assembly that has already been opened is a far harder claim to place with the manufacturer than one that has not.
