Description
-Hofmann MONTY 3550 Series Tilt Tower Tire Changer
The patented feature on the MONTY 3550 is smartSpeed, and it is worth understanding properly because it is not a speed control. The machine reads the torque the wheel is demanding and sets the maximum rotation speed to suit it, varying from 7 RPM to 18 RPM on its own. A tire that is fighting gets slow, high-torque rotation where the technician can see what is happening at the bead; a tire that is coming off easily gets the full 18 RPM and the job is over sooner. The operator does not choose, and therefore cannot choose wrong.
That is the theme of the whole machine. The 3550 series is a tilt-tower changer built for low-profile, high-performance and run-flat tires on cars and light trucks — the assemblies where the wheel is often worth more than the tire, and where a mark on the rim is the entire cost of the job.
Every point of contact is designed not to touch metal
All metal parts carry plastic protection, so nothing on the machine makes metal-to-metal contact with a delicate wheel. It sounds like a detail; it is the difference between a changer you can put a customer's polished alloy on and one you cannot. Combined with the pneumatically-controlled mount/demount head — which lowers and locks into position at the push of a button and then indexes itself away from the wheel automatically — the machine removes the two moments where damage normally happens: setting the head by hand near the rim edge, and forgetting to retract it before the table turns.
Two clamping systems, and a two-position bead breaker
Four self-centring jaws are driven by dual pneumatic clamping cylinders, which is what keeps clamping pressure even around the wheel. A jaw that grips less than its neighbours is the one that slips under torque, and slippage against a jaw is a scratch. The chuck grips from the inside or the outside, so the technician takes the wheel by whichever surface is least likely to be marked, and the machine also carries a centre post clamp for assemblies best held through the hub.
The bead breaker is two-position and delivers 6,000 lbs of force at the shovel through a two-stage pneumatic cylinder, over a range up to 17" wide. Two-stage matters more than the headline force: the second stage is toggled with the foot pedal, so the technician applies as much as the sidewall needs and no more, rather than hitting every tire with everything the machine has.
Will It Fit?
Power — read this before ordering. The 3550 series has two published electrical configurations, and they are not interchangeable. The single-speed machine runs on 120V 1Ph 60Hz. The smartSpeed machine — the one with the variable-speed feature described above — runs on 230V 1Ph 16A 60Hz. If smartSpeed is the reason you are buying this changer, you need the heavier single-phase circuit at the machine's position, installed by a licensed electrician before delivery. Confirm which configuration you are ordering with us if there is any doubt.
Air. The clamping cylinders, the two-stage bead breaker and the mount/demount head are all pneumatic. Run an adequate air line to the position and size the compressor for continuous tire work rather than occasional use.
Space. This is a tilt-tower design, so plan clearance behind the tower for it to tilt as well as working room in front for the technician and the wheel. Shipping weight is 975 lbs (442 Kg), so plan the unload and the move to the bay before the truck arrives; a sound, level concrete floor is assumed and confirming your slab is the customer's responsibility.
Wheels. Inner wheel clamping runs 12"-28" and outer wheel clamping 12"-26", with tire diameters accepted up to 47". Measure your largest regular assembly against those before you order.
Perfect For
- Performance and custom wheel shops, where low-profile and run-flat tires are the normal work rather than the difficult exception.
- Dealerships handling factory alloys, where cosmetic damage becomes a warranty claim.
- High-volume tire retailers that need the throughput of automatic speed control without asking technicians to judge it wheel by wheel.
- Shops with a wide size mix — the clamping range and the 47" tire capacity cover small passenger wheels through large light-truck assemblies on one machine.
What's in the Box
The manufacturer's own feature list for the 3550 series names the four-jaw self-centring clamping chuck, the dual wheel clamping cylinders, the centre post clamp, the two-position bead breaker, the pneumatically-controlled mount/demount head, the plastic protection on metal contact surfaces and patented smartSpeed technology. Those are the items we can confirm are part of the machine. Additional tooling, adapters or a bead-assist arm are not itemised in the data we hold, so ask us what your configuration includes before you assume anything beyond that list is in the crate.

One label we have kept as the manufacturer wrote it
The 17" figure appears twice in our data under two different names: the product description calls it the bead breaker's working range, and one of the product's spec fields calls it maximum wheel width. Those are not the same measurement, and only one of the two labels can be right. We have printed it as the bead breaker range above, because that is how the manufacturer's own description presents it. If you are choosing this machine on the strength of the widest wheel it will take, ask us and we will confirm the wheel-width limit against the factory sheet rather than guess at it here.
Certification and compliance, honestly
The product data we hold for the MONTY 3550 records no independent third-party safety listing, and we are not going to imply one it does not claim. A manufacturer's own declaration of conformity and a listing issued by an accredited third-party body are different documents, and where a rule calls for the second, the first does not satisfy it. If your insurer, a franchise standard or your local authority having jurisdiction requires a particular listing on shop equipment, establish which one it is and let us check this machine's documentation against it before you buy.
Shipping and delivery
Freight equipment, shipped within the lower 48 states. Delivery of Hofmann machines is governed by the Pick Up and Delivery section further down this page, which is not the same as our general freight terms — read it, and if anything there differs from what you are shown at checkout, settle it with us before ordering. In every case, inspect before you sign: look for punctures, crushed corners, a load that has shifted on the pallet and broken banding, and record what you find on the bill of lading at the time of delivery. Signing a clean bill of lading states that the machine arrived undamaged, and that is very difficult to reverse afterwards.
Warranty
Claims run through our published warranty claims process. We have not printed a term here because the data we hold for this model does not state one, and quoting a length we cannot verify would help nobody. One rule applies to every machine we sell: do not disassemble a suspect component before the claim is open. Photograph the fault in place, note the serial number and contact us first — a unit that has already been taken apart is frequently outside the terms of a claim that would otherwise have been honoured.
