Description
-CEMB SM628BPS: two bead press aids, not one
Most swing-arm tire changers will mount an ordinary tire all day without complaint. The ones that cause trouble are the modern ones: low-profile fitments, run-flats, on/off-road light truck tires with sidewalls that refuse to fold, and custom wheels with drop centres deep enough to swallow a bead and then hide it. The SM628BPS is built around the answer to exactly that problem — a Bead Press System with dual bead press aids.
The plural matters. A single press arm gives you one way to hold a bead down into the drop centre; two give you a choice of mounting methods, which is what turns a stiff-sidewall fitment from a struggle into a procedure. On tires that would otherwise need a second technician leaning on them, that is the whole difference.
Why the drop centre is the problem
A tire can only be mounted or demounted if the bead opposite the mount head is sitting in the deepest part of the rim well. On a soft-sidewall tire and a shallow rim, gravity and the operator's hand do that for you. On a stiff sidewall over a deep drop centre, the bead climbs straight back out of the well the moment you stop holding it, and the mount head then tries to lever a bead that has nowhere to go — which is how rims get scored and beads get damaged.
The bead press aids hold the bead where it needs to be for the whole rotation, mechanically and repeatably, and having two means the technician can choose where to apply pressure rather than working around one fixed position. On a modern fitment mix that is not a luxury.
Clamping: two air cylinders doing one job
The self-centring clamping jaws are driven by high-quality dual air cylinders, and the reason to care is uniform pressure. Two cylinders sharing the load apply clamping force evenly around the rim, and even, high clamping force is what stops the rim slipping in the jaws when the mount head meets resistance. Rim slip is the failure that ruins a wheel: the moment the rim moves under the head, the head is no longer where the machine thinks it is.
Self-centring with rim diameter indexing guides also means the setup is repeatable rather than judged by eye, so the second wheel of a set clamps like the first.
The quick-change mount head kit
Supplied as standard, not as an upgrade: a mount head kit with both steel and long-wearing polymer heads, changeable quickly. A steel head is what you want on a steel wheel; a polymer head is what you want anywhere near an alloy face, because the head is the part that touches the wheel and a scratch on a customer's alloy is a bill you pay. Making the changeover fast is what makes it actually happen, instead of a technician deciding a steel head "will be fine this once".
Drive, force and pressure
The turntable is heavy-duty, high-torque and two-speed at 8–15 rpm. Two speeds is the sensible arrangement for difficult work: the slower speed gives control and time to see what a bead is doing, the faster one gets ordinary tires through the bay. Bead breaker force is 6,175 lbf (2,800 Kgf), and operating pressure is 145 PSI.
Capacity
The machine handles wheels up to 44" (1,110 mm) maximum tire outside diameter and up to 15" maximum tire width — custom-wheel and light-truck territory rather than passenger-car-only. The clamping range is covered in the note below, because the published data states it two different ways.
Will it fit your shop?
This is a floor-standing machine that needs an electrical supply and a compressed-air supply at the bay. The air is not optional — the clamping cylinders and the bead press system both run on it — so make sure the bay has a drop rated for continuous use, not just a coil hanging off a neighbouring bay.
The electrical supply is the part to read carefully, because the manufacturer's own data does not agree with itself. See the note below before you have anything wired. The machine ships fully assembled at 440 lbs (200 kg), so plan the route from the delivery point to the bay: doorways and thresholds are the usual obstacle, and a swing-arm machine needs clear space to the side for the arm to swing.
Perfect for
- Independent shops seeing modern fitments — low-profile and run-flat work is where an entry-level changer stops being adequate.
- Custom wheel and performance specialists — deep drop centres, wide rims and alloy faces that must not be marked.
- Light truck and off-road service — the 15" maximum tire width covers fitments a passenger-car changer will simply refuse.
- Shops upgrading from a manual-assist machine — if your technicians are still hand-holding beads into the well, this is the machine that stops it.
What's in the box
The SM628BPS comes fully assembled. The quick-change mount head kit with steel and polymer heads is supplied as standard. The Bead Press System is described in the manufacturer's material as a high-performance addition to the machine, so confirm with us that the configuration you are ordering includes it before you buy — we would rather answer that question than have you open a crate and find out.

Two figures to confirm before you order
Electrical supply. The manufacturer's specification table lists the power supply as 110 V. The manufacturer's own feature list, for the same model, describes the drive as a 220 V motor. Both are the manufacturer's own. Do not have a circuit installed on the strength of this page: contact us with the model and we will confirm the supply requirement with CEMB in writing before your machine ships. Getting this wrong costs an electrician visit at best.
Clamping range. The specification table gives 13"–26" and labels it inside clamping. The feature list says the machine outside-clamps rims from 12"–26". Both are printed above exactly as published. If your work sits at either end of that range — small rims or 26" wheels — ask us to confirm the true inside and outside figures first.
Certification, stated plainly
We do not publish a third-party North American safety listing for this changer, and we will not imply one. The manufacturer's data covers performance and dimensions; it does not include an independent listing, and a manufacturer's own declaration is not the same thing.
Insurers, corporate fleet policies and some local inspection authorities can require a named third-party listing before signing off an installation. If you buy under any of those, ask us to confirm what documentation ships with the machine before you order rather than after.
Shipping and delivery
Delivery is by freight carrier to the contiguous United States. We quote the freight live at checkout from your ZIP code instead of printing a price here, because rates move and a stale number becomes an argument. If the address is residential, a residential fee applies and the checkout will show it.
Plan the receiving end in advance. The crate comes off the trailer by forklift or at a dock and the driver is not equipped to do it for you; where that is a problem we can route the shipment to the carrier's local terminal. Inspect before you sign: damage noted on the bill of lading at delivery is a claim, damage found afterwards usually is not.
Warranty
The manufacturer publishes a warranty document for this machine and that document, not this page, sets the terms. We have kept a coverage period out of this description on purpose — two versions of a warranty is one too many. Request the current copy and read it before you order.
The warning worth repeating on everything we sell: if it fails, do not take it apart before you talk to us. Disassembly before a claim is assessed can void it outright.
Product Features
- North American design adapted to tall and wide tires handles virtually all wheels up to 44” and 15” in width. Outside clamps rims from 12”-26” and is self-centering with rim diameter indexing guides.
- Standard quick-change mount head kit provides steel and polymer long wearing mounting heads.
- Self-centering clamping jaws with high quality dual air cylinders; uniform clamping pressures and high clamping force reduce the possibilities of rim slippage.
- Add a high-performance BPS (Bead Press System) for simple servicing of stiff side wall tires and deep drop center rims.
- Heavy duty, high torque, 2-speed (8-15 rpm) 220v motor easily handles the most difficult sidewall tires and deep drop center rims.
