Topdon TopScan: Bidirectional Control From Something That Fits In A Shirt Pocket

Nearly every pocket dongle on the market is a reader. It listens to the vehicle, reports what it hears, and that is the limit of the relationship. The TopScan talks back: it offers bidirectional control, reaching vehicle-specific subsystems and driving the actuators that make a component do its job on command.

That single capability is why this page is built around it rather than around the code-reading. Reading a fault code tells you which circuit is unhappy. Commanding a component to run tells you whether the part is dead, the wiring is broken, or the module simply never asked. It is the difference between narrowing a fault to three possibilities and settling it — and it is normally a function you go up a price bracket and a form factor to get.

What bidirectional control actually buys you

Take the classic case: a customer reports the cooling fan never runs. The codes are clean. Without actuation, the technician is now testing wiring in the dark or watching a temperature gauge climb and hoping. With actuation, they command the fan. It runs, or it does not, and either answer eliminates half the possible causes in a few seconds.

The same logic covers fuel injectors, coolant pumps, windows and windscreen wipers, among others: determining the integrity of a system or a part, so a faulty component is located rather than inferred.

Eight resets, which is the other half of the working day

Diagnosis finds the fault; the reset is what lets you hand the car back. TopScan carries eight of the most commonly needed service functions: Oil Reset, Throttle Adaptation, EPB Reset, Steering Angle Reset, DPF Regeneration, ABS Bleeding, BMS Reset and Airbag Reset.

It is worth noticing what that list is made of, because it is not a random eight. Electronic parking brake retraction is what turns a rear pad change from a job you can do into a job you can finish. Steering angle reset is what a wheel alignment needs afterwards. Battery management registration is what stops a brand new battery being charged as though it were the old, tired one. ABS bleeding is what makes a brake fluid service complete on a modern car. Each of these is a routine job that quietly became impossible without a scan tool, and any one of them can justify the tool on its own.

The OBD2 fundamentals, free for life

Underneath the advanced work, TopScan performs all ten modes of OBD2 testing, and the manufacturer states these are free for life — no subscription on the basic functions. It supports reading and clearing DTCs, live data, I/M readiness monitor status, freeze frame data, O2 sensor testing, on-board monitor testing, EVAP testing, vehicle information and DTC lookup, with coverage stated at more than 60 vehicle makes across American, Asian and European vehicles.

AutoVIN and AutoScan handle the part of the job nobody bills for: identifying the vehicle's make, model and year automatically, then sweeping every system for stored codes rather than being told which module to interrogate. On an unfamiliar car this is several minutes of the job that simply disappears.

Repair information, not just fault codes

The feature that separates a useful scan tool from a device that produces homework is the repair library. TopScan includes a DTC Repair Guide that defines a code and gives guidance on fixing it, Technical Service Bulletins retrievable by brand, model and year, a DLC location reference and a warning light library.

Technical Service Bulletins are the highest-value item in that list and the most often overlooked. A bulletin is the manufacturer telling you that this symptom on this model is a known pattern with a known remedy — an afternoon of pattern-matching turned into a part number, reachable from the same app that just read the code.

Reports and performance testing

TopScan generates diagnostic reports for systems, fault codes or data streams, and a system report can show the fault code count before and after the repair. That pairing is what proves a repair to somebody who was not holding the tool. Vehicle performance testing is also included, measuring acceleration at intervals defined by a set speed or a fixed distance — niche for most workshops, genuinely useful for anyone investigating a complaint of poor performance, where the driver's impression and the vehicle's behaviour are often two different things.

Will it work with what you have?

This is a dongle, not a tablet: it plugs into the OBD2 port and the diagnostics happen in the app on your own phone. The connection is Bluetooth 5.0 with a stated range of 33 feet/10m, which is enough to sit in the driver's seat, walk around the vehicle while an actuator runs, or watch live data from outside the car with the engine running.

Supported devices are stated as running Android 7.0 or above, or iOS 10.0 or above. Check your handset before ordering — a phone-based tool is only as available as the phone. The unit itself is 84.1 × 50.4 × 27.2mm (3.31 × 1.98 × 1.07 inch) and 78g (2.75 oz), and the interface is offered in ten languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Italian, Korean and Chinese.

Perfect For

  • Mobile technicians, for whom the whole tool fits in a pocket and the screen is already in their hand.
  • Independent workshops needing bidirectional control and service resets without committing to a full tablet platform.
  • Second tool for a busy shop, so the main tablet is not the bottleneck when two bays need it at once.
  • Used-car traders and inspectors doing a fast full-system sweep before buying.
  • Serious DIY owners who want the repair guides and bulletins as much as the codes.

What's in the Box

What the manufacturer's description establishes is the TopScan dongle itself; the app is a download rather than an item in the carton. We do not publish a fuller packing list — whether printed documentation or a case is included is not stated in the information we hold, and we will confirm it from the manufacturer's documentation on request rather than guess it here.

What this page does not claim

Bidirectional control, resets and advanced functions are vehicle-specific by nature: what a tool can command depends on what a given model's modules expose. The information we hold states the capability and the reset list but not a make-by-make coverage table, so this page does not imply that every listed function works on every one of the supported makes. If a specific vehicle or a specific service function is the reason you are buying, tell us which and we will check the manufacturer's coverage documentation before you order. That is a short email and a much better outcome than a return.

Certification and compliance

No third-party safety listing or conformity scheme is published for this item in the information we hold, and nothing here should be read as claiming one. It is stated plainly rather than left as a blank, because a badge implied by silence is the hardest kind to walk back. If a customer contract, an insurer or an employer's tooling policy requires documented conformity for diagnostic equipment used on their vehicles, ask us and we will obtain the current manufacturer documentation.

Delivery and pickup

This ships as a small parcel item within the lower 48 states, or you can collect it from the warehouse. Delivery is calculated for your address at checkout rather than quoted on this page, because carrier pricing moves and a printed figure goes stale. Check the package on arrival and note any damage on the delivery paperwork before signing — a cracked connector housing is easy to spot on opening and very hard to claim for afterwards.

Warranty

Terms and the claim process are published on our warranty claims page. No term is printed here because none is stated in the information we hold; ask before ordering and we will confirm the current manufacturer position. If the unit fails, contact us before opening the case or modifying the connector. A dongle that has been apart cannot be assessed, and an unassessable claim is refused on process rather than on merit.
