Ranger RL-8500 Combination Disc/Drum Brake Lathe, with Bench and Standard Tooling
Two details on this lathe get almost no attention on a specification sheet and change how it feels to use every day: dual LED work lamps aimed into the cut, and a large chip catch funnel and bin under it. Brake work is dark work — you are watching a tool tip against a grey surface inside a drum — and the swarf a lathe produces is sharp, hot and gets everywhere. Lighting the cut properly and catching the chips is the difference between a machine a technician uses willingly and one that gets left for the apprentice.
Underneath that, the RL-8500 is a combination lathe that resurfaces rotors, flywheels and drums on one machine, supplied on a bench with the standard tooling package so it works from the day it is unpacked.
No gearbox, and what that changes
Cross feed and spindle feed each have their own precision DC servo motor. There is no mechanical transmission and no variable-speed gearbox between the motor and the work.
That has three consequences a buyer feels. First, feed rates are infinitely variable rather than stepped, so the operator dials the exact cut for a rough pass or a fine finish instead of choosing the nearest gear. Second, the vibration and chatter a geared drive train transmits to the tool tip is simply not there — and chatter is what a poor brake surface actually is. Third, there is no plastic or bronze shear gear to fail: on a geared lathe that is the sacrificial part, it is expensive, and replacing it takes a machine out of service for as long as the part takes to arrive.
Arbor speed switches between 150 rpm and 200 rpm in seconds, so the surface speed can be matched to the diameter in front of you rather than accepted.
450 lb of cast iron, and precision-ground parts
The body is 450-lb. cast iron on a solid work bench. Mass matters in machining not because it is strong but because it damps: cast iron absorbs the transient vibration a cutting tool sets up, which is what makes a positive-rake, one-pass finish achievable rather than aspirational.
The spindle is hardened and precision ground so it resists grooving — the wear pattern that eventually makes an old lathe cut unevenly no matter how carefully it is set up, and the reason boots were ever fitted to spindles. It runs in massive tapered bearings fed by a splash-lube oil system that keeps a constant flow of oil to them, rather than depending on someone with a grease gun. Serpentine belts drive the whole thing, which run quieter and with less pulsation than a conventional V-belt at the same rating.
Capacity, and how it mounts
Rotors to 17" (432 mm) diameter and 2.5" (64 mm) thick; brake drums from 6" to 28" (152 mm – 711 mm). Spindle travel is 6-7/8" (175 mm). Maximum load is 150 lbs. (68 kg) on the standard 1" arbor, rising to 250 lbs. (113 kg) with the optional 1-7/8" truck arbor — worth ordering with the machine if heavy drums are routine for you rather than occasional.
Mounting is where a combination lathe wins or loses time. The Quick-Change Adapter-Plus system uses built-in springs and does away with conventional bell clamps and cones entirely, and the deluxe standard adapter package covers hubless drums, rotors with a centre hole from 2-5/32" to 4", and composite rotors with a centre hole from 4" to 6.25", across standard and composite rotors for foreign and domestic cars and light trucks. Twin cutter tools and a quick drum-to-rotor changeover are what turn that into shorter floor-to-floor times rather than just a longer feature list.
Will It Fit?
The lathe is supplied on its bench and ships at 678 lbs. (307 kg), so the first question is the route from where the truck stops to where the bench will stand — doorway, corner, and any step. That measurement is the customer's responsibility and it is the usual cause of a bad delivery day.
Power is the second question. The motor drive unit runs on 115 – 230 VAC, 50-60 Hz, 1 Ph, 20 amp: single-phase, ordinary shop supply, but a genuine 20 amp circuit. Confirm the circuit and the breaker before the machine arrives, and give your electrician those figures rather than a description.
Perfect For
- Independent workshops bringing brake machining back in-house instead of sending rotors out and waiting on them.
- Tyre and brake specialists where floor-to-floor time is the economics of the job.
- Machine and rebuild shops resurfacing flywheels alongside rotors and drums.
- Dealership service departments that need consistent, repeatable finishes from technicians of varying experience.
What's in the Box
The lathe, its bench, and the standard tooling package: precision twin cutter tools, the deluxe standard adapter package with the Quick-Change hubless adapter system, adapters for standard and composite rotors on foreign and domestic cars and light trucks, the top storage tray for the adapters in daily use, dual LED work lamps, and the chip catch funnel and bin.
Optional, not included: the truck adapter set, and the 1-7/8" truck arbor that lifts the load limit to 250 lbs.

Certification, honestly
No independent safety listing is claimed in this product's data, and we are not going to write one onto the page to make the section look complete. A manufacturer's own declaration and a third-party laboratory listing are different documents, and on hard-wired workshop machinery some insurers, corporate safety schedules and local inspectors ask for the second by name.
If that applies where the lathe will be installed, tell us the requirement before you order and we will confirm what Ranger actually issues for this model.
Shipping and delivery
Crated freight within the lower 48 states, with the cost quoted live at checkout against your own address rather than pulled from a table.
Plan the unload first. The driver's responsibility ends at the tailgate, so a forklift or a dock is the easy answer and a pallet jack on level ground with a second person is the practical minimum for a 678 lbs. crate. If neither is available, choose terminal pickup and collect from the carrier's yard. A home address is a residential delivery and carries a residential fee. In-person collection is also possible from the pickup locations listed further down this page.
Check the crate before you sign for it. Damage recorded on the bill of lading while the driver is there is claimable; the same damage reported afterwards, on a clean signature, usually is not.
Warranty
Ranger's warranty document for this lathe is linked in the downloads on this page, and the term and conditions are in that document — read them there, because that is what a claim is settled against rather than any summary of ours.
The one thing we ask is that a faulty machine stays assembled until it has been looked at. Once a servo drive or a spindle assembly has been opened, the failure sequence cannot be established, and a claim that would have been straightforward becomes an argument. Call us and describe the symptom first.
