Ranger RFJ-5000HD: 5,000 lbs of capacity that still starts from a 3" pad

Capacity and clearance usually pull against each other. Heavier-rated jacks get taller because the structure has to get thicker, and the shop ends up owning two of them: a low one for the cars and a strong one for the trucks. The RFJ-5000HD is interesting because it refuses that trade — 5,000 lbs (2.5 tons) of rating, and a lowered pad height of 3" (76 mm), which is the entry figure you would expect from a dedicated low-profile jack rather than from a heavy-duty steel one.

That single pairing is what qualifies it as a bay's only jack. A lowered coupe and a half-ton pickup are the same job to it, and the 20" (508 mm) of maximum lift means the truck gets high enough to be worth the trip.

Will It Fit — and Will It Reach?

  • Getting under: 3" (76 mm) at the top of the pad, collapsed. Check that against the clearance at your actual lift point; on lowered cars the pinch weld sits lower than the bodywork suggests.
  • Getting up: 20" (508 mm) of maximum lift, which is what buys you room for exhaust, transmission and suspension work rather than a wheel change only.
  • Stance: the frame is 10.5" (267 mm) across at the front and 14" (356 mm) at the rear. That taper is deliberate — a narrow nose slides between obstructions, and a wider tail resists the tipping moment that appears when the load is high.
  • Floor: flat, hard and rated for the vehicle plus the jack. As the arm rises, the jack must be free to roll toward the car; a floor that binds the casters transfers the load sideways into the vehicle instead of upward. The suitability of your floor is yours to judge before you lift.

Flanged side plates: the detail that keeps a heavy lift straight

The sides of this frame are flanged. That is a small structural word for a large practical effect: a flat plate resists bending in one direction and twists in the other, while a folded edge stiffens it against both. Under an off-centre 5,000 lbs load — which is most real lifts, because a jacking point is rarely at the vehicle's balance point — an unstiffened jack frame flexes, and that flex is what you feel as the vehicle walking sideways as it comes up. Flanged plates hold the geometry, so the saddle stays where you placed it.

The same reasoning runs through the rest of the chassis. Rugged steel construction is the point of this model rather than a boast; the lighter aluminum jacks in Ranger's range exist for portability, and this one exists to sit in a bay and be leaned on daily for years.

Descent control, and the case for a twist handle

The lowering control is a twist system on the handle rather than a separate lever. Two things follow. First, your hands stay where they already are, which means you are looking at the vehicle rather than groping for a valve. Second, and more importantly, twist control is progressive: a small rotation gives a slow descent, a larger one a faster drop, and you can arrest it partway. A universal-joint pressure release smooths the action further so the movement is not jerky.

This matters most in the last few inches, when a car is being set onto stands. A jack that only knows open and closed drops the vehicle the final distance, which is hard on suspension bushings, hard on stands, and unnerving for anybody nearby.

The pump on the other side of the cycle is a roller-cam dual-plunger assembly with sealed hydraulics, so lifting stays quick and the internals stay clean. A safety overload system caps what the jack will attempt at all, and swivel casters let a 74 lbs. tool be positioned with a foot rather than lifted.

Perfect For

  • Busy independent shops that want one jack to cover cars, crossovers and light trucks without swapping tools mid-job.
  • Tire and brake bays, where the same jack goes under a lowered import and a work truck in the same hour.
  • Fleet and municipal garages needing a capacity margin above what the vehicles actually weigh.
  • Serious home shops where a jack is expected to last decades rather than seasons.

What's in the Box

The jack, assembled, with its handle. Ranger's feature list for this model does not include stands, chocks or saddle adapters, so plan on buying stands separately — and use them. A hydraulic jack lifts a vehicle; it is not rated to hold one while someone works underneath.

Before the first lift

Two habits worth forming with any new hydraulic jack. Purge the system before you rely on it — air can enter during transit, and air in a hydraulic circuit shows up as a spongy handle and a saddle that sinks under load. And keep the routine short but real: grease the pivots, casters and saddle, watch the fluid level, and look over the welds and seals when you put it away. A jack that has started behaving differently — creeping down, lifting unevenly, weeping oil — comes out of service until it has been checked, not at the end of the week.

Certification, honestly

Ranger supplies a specification sheet and a warranty document for this jack, both linked on this page. Our data does not show an independent third-party safety listing for it, and we are not going to imply one. The distinction is worth knowing when you are buying for a workplace: a manufacturer's own documentation is a declaration by the maker, while an outside listing is a separate body testing the product and standing behind the result — and some insurers, fleet policies and local workplace rules specifically require the second. If that applies to you, ask us before ordering and we will put the question to Ranger in writing.

Shipping and delivery

Delivery is to the lower 48 states, with the cost quoted live at checkout for the address you enter — we do not publish a figure here because carrier pricing moves and a stale number helps nobody. Deliveries to a home address carry a residential fee, shown before you pay. If you would rather collect, pickup is available at the Ranger locations listed on this page.

When it arrives, look at the carton before signing. Crushing, punctures or oil marks go on the delivery paperwork there and then; once a clean signature is on the sheet, a carrier will usually treat the shipment as delivered intact. Take a photo, note it, and message us the same day.

Warranty and service

Coverage is set out in Ranger's warranty document, linked from this page, and that document rather than any summary here is what governs a claim. The one thing to avoid: taking the hydraulic unit apart before you talk to us. Sealed assemblies that have been opened are normally outside warranty, and the symptoms that tempt people to open them — slow lift, spongy feel, a jack that will not hold height — are precisely the ones a claim is meant to cover. Call, text or chat and we will get it started.
